Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction

On-the-job Training is always part of the Higher Education curriculum which aims

to harness the knowledge, values and skills of the students before they partake to the

challenges of the environment. This is a great opportunity for the students to understand

the theories and principles better through experience and practice. Learning by doing is

a tested approach in education to get greater output from the trainees and develop their

potential to become future assets of the organization. An internship combines the theory

that students learned in school with practical work experience and for about three

months to a year (Ebreo et al, 2014)

L. McQuerrey, 2015 also said that On-the-job training is a practical way of

introducing new employees to the workplace by providing them hands-on learning

opportunities and instruction. Typically, employees are briefed and then paired with a

seasoned colleague who shows them the ropes. The employee can then transition into

completing tasks on her own while under supervision. This shows that On-the-Job

Training is a way of allowing the employee to do a job which is related to his/her field of

specialization. As a student of Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology majoring in

Electricity, I am required to undergo On-The-Job Training. It is one of the requirements

to finish my course. This is in line to the theory that some skills can’t be taught – they

must be demonstrated (Lisa, 2015).

In trying to strengthen the quality assurance system in the Philippines higher

education, institutions of higher learning were mandated to upgrade higher education

curricular offerings to international standards (Valdez, 2012). This study will determine

the relationship between the OJT and the Job-Performance of the graduates in BSIT

Electricity of SDSSU. This will determine if the institution is submitting to call that is to

upgrade the higher education curriculum and have its quality education. The OJT must

be the application of theories or knowledge. It is the experiential learning of the students

that has a goal to maximize their job performance and expand their learning in the field.

graduate when they are employed?

Significance of the Study

It is the hope of the researcher that study was deemed significant to the following

groups of people:

School Administrator: They could refer to the result of this study in

empowering students to have more time focusing on what work they will have in the

future. It could also make them realize the importance of OJT.

Teachers/Supervisors. They will able to foresee the future of the students. the

job performance of the students is the reflection or application of what their teacher

taught to them.

Students. it will give them information about the importance of OJT and

realization of what is their possible work in the near future.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter shows selected literature and related studies which served as

background information on which this study intended to investigate.

Related Literature

Gaining knowledge is acquired through different aspects like home, school and

other avenues. Constructive education is gained in school by studying various subjects

with principles necessary for future employment. As students enter the tertiary

education, they would encounter not just theory of what they studied but also to apply

their knowledge to gain skills in the on-the-job training

(OJT) program where students are trained to absorb different kind of experiences on

which it will nourish their minds in their chosen industry as well as their personal view

and social commitments.

OJT plays a significant role in the curriculum of every degree program, which

serves as a venue for the students to practice what they have learned from concepts

and principles in developing work ethics, attitude and produce effective, innovative and

be globally competitive professionals. This hands-on experience aims to apply the

knowledge, demonstrate necessary skills, enhance the attitude and hone the character

of the students towards a holistic appreciation of the actual workplace. This is where the

students will be given job assignments that will test their ability to accomplish certain

task. They are being observed and all their accomplishments are being evaluated based

on the criteria set by the academic institution. This is where the students outcomes of

The research with an intention of finding out the relationship between on-the-job

training and employee performance in DHL and FedEX courier companies that operate

in Dar es Salaam Tanzania was conducted. The objectives which were the research

were to examine the existing on-the-job training programs in the courier companies in

Dar es Salaam and to assess employee’s performance in courier companies in Dar es

Salaam. Correlation survey methodology was used and questionnaires were used as a

research instruments. The sample population of 150 employees was taken and the

respondents were randomly chosen and samples from each courier organization were

proportionately taken. 50% of the total number of employees in each company was

taken. Field finding showed that different programs of on-the-job training are conducted

in DHL and FedEx. Those training are mainly conducted according to the general need

of the company or due to the normal changes that do take place in the company. The

level of performance is measured against well set standards and generally Key

Performance Indicators are used. At the same time it was found out that performance to

a big extent depends on the training employees received. It may be, with certainty,

stated that there is a big relationship between on-the-job-training and employees

performance in DHL and FedEx. On-the-job training program really positively influence

on employee performance. It is recommended that governments should invest more in

practical education through Vocational Educational Training Authority school (VETA).

Students who complete their studies in those schools will not need to spend much

resource on further training the moment they join the companies. Employers should also

try the best way possible to train their employees so that they perform.

Local

The Mass Communication students obtained an excellent performance rating in

terms of personal characteristics, attitude towards the job, adherence to company policy

and competence while very good rating in job performance was achieved. They

obtained a high academic performance rating in media marketing and average in

Advertising principle. Students with high academic performance in Advertising principle

also obtained high training performance and vice versa except in adherence to

company policy. The university may continuously upgrade facilities and laboratories to

enhance further the knowledge and skills of the students necessary for the future work

assignments (Felican, Ylagan & Buted, 2014). A growing number of employees and

newly upgrades must be fully equipped with the knowledge and skills to be competitive

in their respective field. At this point, the educational attainment of the individual is given

great emphasis (Dimalibot et al, 2014). The principles of advertising must be realized by

the students through practice in cooperation with the strategic communication and

alumni affairs office (SCAAO) of activities that might be useful for the office that would

apply the knowledge and skills of the students in the media marketing to promote the

image of the university.
