PLANNING OVERVIEW – TERM PP – Year 2 only
Year Level Unit Title Salvation Topic Aspect of Human Development
Year One I am Special Baptism A1 Wondering at our Specialness

Overview – explanation of the content of the unit and how it explores the Salvation Topic and development of the Human Person

People wonder about the differences among individuals and how they are created. This may then lead people to wondering about God who creates
every person different and special. Each individual has their own unique personality, interests and beliefs (A1, A2). God created everyone different
and through this people come to the realisation that there are various things that can be discovered about God. God is the one who created each
person to be special and loves each individual fully (A3).

Jesus shows that all people are special to God and that God wants people to use their specialness in loving ways (B1, B2). Through the special
celebration called Baptism, people can become members of God’s family (C1). Through this, Jesus wants his followers to use their specialness to
show love to one another and to love themselves for who they are (C2).

Through kindness, love, caring for one another and through the act of giving people are using their specialness that God created. When followers
of Jesus continue to try, and use their specialness to show love, they are living how Jesus wants (C3).

I feel very special that I am apart of God’s family. I was baptised when I was very young and it brings me a sense of belonging and inclusion. It
brings great joy and love when I look back at my baptism photos. I see all my family present at the ceremony and it is a very special occasion. My
immediate family, parents, brother, my aunties, uncles and grandparents were all present at the ceremony. It is great to be able to look back on all
the photos and reflect on how far I have come, being a member of God’s family through being baptised. This has given me a new way of looking at
things, through God’s presence in my life has given me strength and hope. As I have been baptised it allows me to be a member of God’s family
which is very special and holds a very special place in my heart.

Description of Assessment:
Through this assessment, the student’s work sample will be included and this clearly shows what the student has completed. Using the students work sample it
is clear evidence when transferring onto the checklist. Through the rating scale on the left-hand side, it displays the students current level and a space for
additional comment for further notes. Allowing a space for comment ensures the educator can state the strengths and areas for improvement for the student.
This could also be used as an assessment piece in the student’s portfolio. The task stated at the top gives parents an understanding of what the student was
asked to complete along with their work sample and the checklist.
PLANNED RITUAL - 1 planned ritual that supports the learning that has occurred in the unit of work.

Children create their own book, learning journal or natural mobile with the materials they have previously
collected. They have the freedom of choice to choose how they would like to represent what they have learnt
throughout the unit “I am Special” focusing on the unit of baptism. The children are to base their creation off the
particular focus questions below:

- What was your favourite piece of work?

- What was it about?
- What made you think about ways in which you could use your specialness?
- What happens when people are baptised?
- How do people become part of God’s family?

The children use their higher order thinking skills to be creative and reflect on their learning throughout the unit.
Discussions with their peers about their favorite part and how their baptism has welcomed them into God’s family.
Ways to express this is open to the children. There work will be displayed in the classroom with a blurb from the
educator describing what the task was and the objectives. The children may always be reminded that they are part
of God’s family and through the class display it can create conversations between the children and remind them to
constantly to show their specialness just like Jesus did.

Parents are welcomed into the outdoor area sitting in a circle with their child sitting in front of them. The educator
will explain what will be covered in the ritual. This will include a penitential rite, an opening prayer which the
children have learnt throughout the program, hymn that the children have learnt, prayers of the faithful and
dismissal. After the ritual has finished, parents are welcome to look at all their children’s work they have
completed through the unit of work.

Parent Letter

Dear Parent/ Caregiver,

The Religious Education unit focuses upon the Sacrament of Baptism. It begins with exploring ways in which
people are different and special, for example, hair colour, size of hands and feet, height and complexion. As
people discover the ways in which they are different from others, they may wonder at God who created each
person unique and special, and to celebrate what this reveals about God, that God loves each of us.

The unit also explores how Jesus showed that all people are special to God and how he wants them to use their
‘specialness’ in loving ways. The children will be introduced to the understanding that, through Baptism, people
become members of God’s family. The unit explores ways in which followers of Jesus can use their ‘specialness’
to show love for others.

There are many ways in which you can support your child with their learning in this topic at home. Below are
various ways:

- Sharing with them ways in which people are different and therefore special, for example, hair colour, size
of hands, etc.
- Wondering with them what God, who created each of us different and special, must be like.
- Sharing with them the stories and pictures of their own Baptism.

Yours sincerely

TO KNOW, WORSHIP AND LOVE: BOOK 1 – LEVEL TWO
JESUS AND THE CHILDREN
(Mark 10:13–16)
YOU WILL NEED:

 3D figures for Jesus, 2 apostles, 4 children

 green cloth for grass

Children are seated in a semi-circle ready to listen to the story. Carry the materials carefully to the circle and place them
beside you. Roll out the green cloth as you say…
We all like to feel that we are welcome and that we belong. It is a good feeling to have. In the Bible there is a story
about a time when Jesus welcomed and blessed little children.

Present Jesus figure, place him in the story space and say …
This is Jesus. He is talking with some friends.

Move disciples to either side of Jesus.

They are called his disciples. One day, some people brought their children to Jesus.

Put people and children figures on cloth and move towards Jesus.
They wanted Jesus to meet their children and give them a blessing.

Move the children towards Jesus.

Jesus’ disciples started to send them away, saying that he was too busy with the adults.

Move the disciples to block the children from Jesus.

But Jesus saw what was happening and he was very upset with his disciples for wanting to send the children away.

Move Jesus and place him between the disciples and children say …
“Let the children come to me,” he said, “and don’t stop them! Because God’s kingdom belongs to people who are just
like them.”

Place children in a semi circle around Jesus and say …

Jesus told all the adults that they had to be more like little children – learning to trust God just like a child has to
trust its mother or father. Then they would shine with God’s love.

Hold your right hand over each child’s head in the sign of blessing whilst you say…
Jesus then welcomed all the children into his arms and hugged them. He placed his hands on their heads and gave
them his blessing.
The children knew that Jesus loved them because God’s love was shining in them.

Carefully pack story materials into storage box and put on shelf. Ensure that children are watching so they know how to
pack the materials away and where to find them.

I wonder:.. how you feel when adults send you away…why Jesus wanted to be with the little children…what Jesus
meant when he told the adults that they had to be just like little children…if you remember when you were so little
you had to trust your mother and father for everything…if that’s how we have to trust God…how the children felt
when Jesus hugged them and blessed them…what you might say to Jesus if you met him.

Mark 10:13-16 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

Jesus Blesses Little Children

13
People were bringing little children to him in order that he might touch them; and the disciples spoke sternly to
them. 14 But when Jesus saw this, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the little children come to me; do not
stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. 15 Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive
the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it.” 16 And he took them up in his arms, laid his hands on
them, and blessed them.
1 Corinthians 12:24-27 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

24
whereas our more respectable members do not need this. But God has so arranged the body, giving the greater
honor to the inferior member, 25 that there may be no dissension within the body, but the members may have the
same care for one another. 26 If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honored, all
rejoice together with it.
27
Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.

Behold the Lamb Hymn

Behold the Lamb who bears our sins away,

Slain for us - and we remember
The promise made that all who come in faith
Find forgiveness at the cross.
So, we share in this bread of life,
And we drink of His sacrifice
As a sign of our bonds of peace
Around the table of the King.

The body of our Saviour Jesus Christ,

Torn for you - eat and remember
The wounds that heal, the death that brings us life
Paid the price to make us one.
So, we share in this bread of life,
And we drink of His sacrifice
As a sign of our bonds of love
Around the table of the King.

The blood that cleanses every stain of sin,

Shed for you - drink and remember
He drained death’s cup that all may enter in
To receive the life of God.
So we share in this bread of life,
And we drink of His sacrifice
As a sign of our bonds of grace
Around the table of the King.

And so, with thankfulness and faith we rise

To respond, - and to remember
Our call to follow in the steps of Christ
As His body here on earth.
As we share in His suffering
We proclaim Christ will come again!
And we’ll join in the feast of heaven
Around the table of the King ”.
Holy, Holy, Holy Hymn

Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty!

Unto everlasting days our song shall rise to Thee;
Holy, Holy, Holy, Merciful and Mighty!
God in Three Persons, blessed Trinity!

Holy, Holy, Holy! all the saints adore Thee;

Heaven’s elders cast their crowns down by the glassy sea;
Cherubim and seraphim worship too before Thee,
Who wert, and art, and evermore shalt be.

Holy, Holy, Holy! though the darkness hide Thee,

Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see,
Only Thou art holy, there is none beside Thee
Perfect in power, in love, and purity.

Come to the Table Hymn

Come to the table, come to the feast!

Come to the table of the Lord!
Bringing gifts of bread and wine, come with open hearts
Come to the table of the Lord

This bread that we bring, and offer now to You

It will become your Body, it will our hearts renew
We offer this gift of bread with true and humble hearts
With all that we bring, all that we are!

This wine that we bring, and offer now to You

It will become your Blood, it will our hearts renew
We offer this gift of wine with true and humble hearts
With all that we bring, all that we are!

Our lives that we bring, and offer now to You

May you live within our hearts, may we rest in You
We offer this gift of our lives with all our hearts
With all that we bring, all that we are!
