One Penance: We Make Choices The Ability to Choose Jesus Made Choices
Overview – explanation of the content of the unit and how it explores the Salvation Topic and development of the Human Person
“We Make Choices” is a Year One unit of work, that enables the students the opportunity to develop their ability to make choices. Every human being is created with the
ability to choose, some of these chooses are right, wrong, simple or some may involve more profound decision-making. In this unit, students will explore the essential
elements of making choices. These lay down the foundations for conscience, making decisions and Christian conscience which will be explored more in later years.

This Religious Education unit, assists in the development of the child’s spiritual awareness, it aims to develop their understanding of wondering at the human experience of
making choices. As the students think about the vast range of choices they can make and how decisions can change as people grow. Students may begin to wonder at God
who created people with the ability to choose. This ability to wonder will enable the students to reveal the God Loves us.

In this unit, it explores Jesus as the model of truly human behaviours. It focuses on how the world of the student’s experiences would be different is all accepted his
promise. Jesus also made choices, “We Make Choices” enables students to understand that Jesus wants people to make loving choices such as friendship with another
person.

The unit contributes to the development of understanding that some people make choices that deliberately or unnecessarily hurt others. Times like these, it is vital that
people say “sorry”. Religious Education helps students discover that Jesus wants his followers to use the ability to choose to show love and kindness to others.

This unit of work is especially essential for the development of the whole child as it lays the foundations for the religious and spiritual capabilities needed for growth in
their sacred journey.

Catholic World View and Teacher Witness (See Teacher Note) Link with Key Understandings and Learning Points by highlighting

Teacher Witness:
There have been times in my own life that I have needed to forgive people that have made the wrong choices. I have also made mistakes and, I will continue
to make mistakes because that is the only way in which you can learn, grow and develop as a human being. I have needed to say sorry to friends and family
when I have made mistakes. I want my students to learn these same understandings and grow into people that make loving choices and say sorry when
appropriate.

“We Make Choices” unit of work, is all about human experience and wondering. The teacher can give students first-hand stories and experiences of when
they have been able to say sorry because they have done something wrong or needed to forgive someone. This is an important life skill, and this unit allows
students to grow and learn about forgiveness and making the right choices.

Catholic World View:

The Sacrament of Penance is a celebration of God’s love and mercy. It celebrates the call to repentance after a process of conversion of heart. It includes
confession to our sins and receiving forgiveness from God. This unit of work is the building blocks for students to receive this sacrament. Without the
foundations of this unit, students would not develop their understanding of making the right/loving choices and their ability to forgive people.
