Part 1 - Securing a Domain Name

A “Domain Name” is the address at which your new website will live. This is
what people will be typing into the web browser or searching Google to find
your page. It looks like this: http://yourdomainname.com

1.1 Visit a domain name registrar and begin searching for available
domain names.

Our recommended website domain Registrar is NameCheap.com. NameCheap

has transparent pricing, an easy user interface, and doesn’t confuse the buying
process with unnecessary up-sells. They won’t raise the price upon yearly renewal
and each domain is roughly $10 per year. They also include free bonuses.

1.2 Search for a very specific, very NICHE domain that clearly states
the purpose of your website or your own personal name

- For internet marketers building a personal blog, it would be most ideal to find your
FirstLastName.com (RickRobbins.com)
- If unavailable, try spin-offs: WorkWithRick.com, SuccessWithRick.com, JoinRick.com
- For businesses, try to get YourCompanyName.com (RicksWidgets.com)
- For service based businesses, try to get as location and service specific as possible -
(SouthBeachWindowRepair.com) (NorthernCaliforniaTreeRemoval.com)
- .com is preferable, but there’s no shame in a .net, .co, .org, or .biz or even .blog
- Having a very specific domain name tells search engines and visitors what type of
content they are going to receive, and is very important.
- Bad examples of a domain name: (XXLIncorporated.com) <— what does it represent?

- If you are having trouble finding a domain name, try the “suggestions” tab on
the right hand side of the NameCheap domain search screen:

1.3 Snatch up all the good domains that you can find which are
relevant to your business or brand.

- Each domain will cost you roughly $10-15 per year, so keep that in mind.
- If you can find your actual First & Last name, it’s probably wise to purchase
the .com, .net, .org, to make sure nobody else with your name can purchase this and
confuse your brand in the future.

If you are still having trouble finding the perfect domain name, try entering some
keywords related to your business into this fantastic tool: http://namemesh.com

(Make sure to change the dropdown menu in the top right to NameCheap)

Part 2 - Sign Up for Monthly Website Hosting

Website Hosting is where your actual digital website files will live -
inside of a hard drive somewhere on the planet. Think of the domain
name like a street address, and your website hosting is the physical
house. Both pieces are necessary for a website to function.

2.1 Choose a web hosting company and sign up

- While most web hosts are compatible with WP, some are certainly better than others
- Do your research on hosting providers before making any long-term commitments or
signing up for annual packages.

Our recommended website hosting company is SiteGround.com. SiteGround has

the absolute best customer service available. Their 24/7 live chat is like having
your own tech support team. The pricing is competitive and the servers are fast.
They will migrate your website for free and they answer support tickets within 5
minutes. It’s a win win win win.

2.2 Select a hosting plan that fits your business needs

- Monthly hosting is fairly affordable. Select a smaller package if you only intend to
host a single website.
- If you think you might have more than one website in the future, you can host as
many websites on a single hosting plan as your storage space allows.

2.3 Enter your main domain name from NameCheap

(888) 988-BLOG info@wpmakeovers.com

2.4 Enter your account information and complete the signup process.
- Note: Make sure you choose a data center from the dropdown list that is near to you
geographically.
- You may be able to get certain price benefits for choosing long term contracts.
- If you have a website currently on another host, SiteGround will migrate it for free.

Congratulations! You’ve now succesfully purchased a domain

name and a website hosting package.

The puzzle is almost complete. You’re almost done!

Up Next: Connecting Your Domain to Your Hosting Account.

(888) 988-BLOG info@wpmakeovers.com

Part 3 - Connecting The Domain & Hosting Account

This part might sound intimidating, but it’s actually quite easy (when you
know what to do). We’re simply going to copy and paste one piece of
information from SiteGround over to NameCheap. Luckily, it’s super easy
and takes almost no time at all!

3.1 Log Into SiteGround and NameCheap in two browser tabs.
- By now you’ve already created an account on both SiteGround and Namecheap.
- You will want to have both accounts logged in (in the same browser window)
- You can open a new tab by pressing Command+T (on mac) or Ctrl+T (on Windows)

3.2 From within SiteGround - Locate your DNS (Nameservers)

- Nameservers are the physical address of your hosting account on the web.
- First click on ”My Accounts” and then click on “Information & Settings”
- Locate “Account DNS” and make note of the two URLs. (Yours may be different)
- In this case (below), the DNS values are: ns1.us55.siteground.us and
ns2.us55.siteground.us
(888) 988-BLOG info@wpmakeovers.com

3.3 From within NameCheap - Locate your domain & click “Manage”
- Navigate to “Dashboard” or “Domain List” and find the domain you want to link
- Click “Manage” and open the settings for this domain

3.4 Locate the Nameservers dropdown menu on NameCheap

- Locate the dropdown menu called “Nameservers”
- Change “NameCheap BasicDNS” to “Custom DNS”

3.5 Switch back over to SiteGround and copy the Account DNS
- You only need to copy the URL portion (not the string of digits)
(888) 988-BLOG info@wpmakeovers.com

3.6 Paste the URLs from SiteGround into NameCheap

- Typically there will be 1 digit that is different. “ns1” and “ns2”

3.7 Click the green check mark when you’re finished.

- That’s it! You’ve just successfully pointed your domain name at your hosting account!
- You will see a notification that it may take up to 48 hours for the changes to come into
effect. The process is usually much faster, however.

Congratulations! You’ve just connected your domain name to

your hosting account.

Now let’s get a website up and running!
