Classroom Observation Assignment

Observation Form 1

Observation Date: 04/17/2019 Observation Time: 1 hour 20 minutes

Teacher Observed: Bilal Uygur Subject/Grade Level: Math/10

School Observed: Harmony Science Academy-El Paso Observer: Metin Guclu

1-What was/were the learning objectives/outcomes of the lesson? (Add state objectives if
known, for example, TEKS §111.4. Grade 2.b.)

TEKS 3.E Graph polar equations by plotting points and using technology

2-How did the teacher begin and end the lesson?

There was a question (warm up activity) on the board ready for the students. As soon as they took
their seats, they started working on the question which was from their homework paper.

After the warm up activity he tried to make connection with the previous lesson. He tried to make
students ready for the upcoming content.

He didn’t do anything special for the closure. He just reminded about the homework and upcoming
chapter test. He just told them to get prepared for the test.

3-What did the teacher use for teaching materials or instructional aids/equipment?

Projector, power point presentation, white board, worksheets, laptop, board marker, text book.

4-Which instructional methods and strategies did the teacher use? ( lecture, inquiry, discovery
learning, discussions, games or simulations, demonstrations, cooperative learning, integration of
technology, socrative questioning, etc)

Lecture , demonstrations , integration of technology , socrative questioning methods were mainly

used during my observation.

5-How did the teacher assess learning? (informal, formal, formative, summative, oral, open-
ended, quiz, feedback etc) See Chapter 8 for more information on assessment methods

By oral, open-ended, and feedback.

6- What can you say about the teacher’s philosophy/beliefs and style?
(Traditional/progressive, behaviorist, student-centered vs. teacher centered, authoritative etc)

Traditional, teacher-centered, authoritative

7-How does the teacher manage classroom? Can you identify classroom management
techniques used?

He didn’t have to manage the class actually. Rules and regulations were established way before
and the students knew what was expected from them by now. They were well-behaved and
motivated. They were eager to learn. He was so lucky to be a teacher for this class.

Effective time management, positive reinforcement, encouragement of students, materials ready

so that there was no time lost from instructional time.

8-Observe in the classroom setting and determine types of behavior students play when off-
task. What do they do when they are not paying attention? How does the teacher re-direct
them or get them back on task?

During his lecture all class paid attention, followed him and looked at the board. When they started
working on a specific question, they started talking among each other in a tolerable level. It was
ok, it wasn’t a big deal.

The teacher sometimes reminded them to stay on task by calling their names or to all class saying
that ‘ok guys please focus on your work’

9-How does the teacher communicate with students (verbal, vocal, meta-verbal or non-verbal
communication such as facial, body language, use of space, motion and time?)

Mostly verbal communication, non-verbal communication such as facial also used.

Use of space he was all over the class very active seeing everybody’s work.

10-Who were the students in the class? What did you notice about them? (Background,
diversity, attitude, motivation, interaction, participation, etc)

The students were well-behaved. He was so lucky having this much motivated and well –behaved
kids. The school is in El Paso. The kids were mostly Mexican-Americans. There was only 1
African-American. There was only one Asian kid from Turkey. There was no white student. The
kids are mostly from low income families. I can observe that 3 or 4 kids are from rich families.

They were actively participating and involved all class activities. I wish all teachers would have
this kind of students one day in their life time .

11-What did you see that is effective in engaging students? What do you see that is ineffective
in keeping students engaged?
He was well prepared and using time effectively. He was all over the place looking at everybody’s
work and especially at their faces. And most importantly he was making personal connections with
the students asking them how they were. He has already built a positive culture and everybody can
see this climate during the entire period. These were so effective and we all try to implement these
in our classrooms.

If you try to keep lecturing longer, it’s ineffective. After some individual practices the students
were trying by themselves, he tried to solve a misunderstood question by most of the kids on the
board. It was kind of ineffective since most of the kids were showing interest anymore.

12-What are the two instructional strategies you observed and would like to apply in your
classroom?

Modeling and question/answer. I am already using those in my classes. It’s nothing new for me.

13-What are two important classroom management strategies that you observed and would
like to apply in your classroom?

Effective time management, encouragement of students

Again these techniques I already use myself. But today as an observer I have realized that it’s so
important for the kids to be supported such as ‘you can do it, if it’s difficult for you I can help you
after school’.

They feel valued and most importantly they know that you are always on their side no matter what.
