Ashia D. Parks
Principal
Achievement First Providence Mayoral Academy Middle School
370 Hartford Avenue
Providence, RI 02909

Dear Ms. Parks,

I am interested in applying for the mathematics teaching position available at your school. I would like
to apply for this position because I feel my work ethic, collegiate experience, work experience, and
diverse background will not only be an asset to your team at AF Providence Mayoral Academy but to
your students as well.

As a tutor in El Paso’s local school districts, I have developed a strong work ethic. The characteristic I
hold include patience, dependability, responsibility, and a positive attitude. It’s important to hold these
characteristics because we need to understand not all our students are going to learn at the same rate
as others. We need to be patient when students are not understanding certain concepts and maintain a
“they can do this” attitude rather than a “they will never get this” attitude.

As a recent graduate of the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), I have been well equipped and
prepared to face any adversities in the classroom. Beyond my work experience, the teacher preparation
program at UTEP has required me to partake in multiple observation and service-learning hours in the
general, bilingual and special education populations. These hours have not only benefited me in
observing a professional in the classroom but have encouraged me significantly to pursue a career in
education.

My current position as a tutor in the college preparation program Advancement Via Individual
Determination (AVID) at Indian Ridge Middle School has helped me develop strong working relationships
with administrators, core curriculum educators, special education educators, and counselors. Working
for the AVID program has also allowed me to work with students of all ability levels including those in
general, special and bilingual education. One item that has been constantly implemented in my tutorial
sessions has been reminding students not to define people by their physical/mental disability, language,
culture or appearance but to define them by the person they are. I believe understanding where
students come from, the adversities they face in society, and the reasons for their beliefs will help us in
developing a truly multicultural classroom, as well as assisting students in breaking statistics and barriers
set upon them.

As a young Hispanic man, and coming from the border city of El Paso, the values and beliefs that have
shaped me have helped me in learning and acknowledging the values and beliefs from other cultures. I
believe it’s important to recognize other cultures because it helps us to relate more effectively across
cultural lines to that of our own and our students.

Enclosed is my resume. I will contact you next week to discuss employment opportunities. I look forward
to speaking with you.

Sincerely,

Christian R. Tovar
