Agenda : To verify the feasibility of 5 T EOT Crane in Bay 2 as per attached

drawings.

Methodology : The load data provided manufacturer and calculations are

done; analysis is performed on Scia Engineer and calculations taken from
Staad Pro which were given to us to study and ascertain the stability of
structure.

1. The EOT cranes are subjected to heavy structural and vibration Loads.
EOT cranes section is subjected to vertical load and horizontal thrust
(Surge) loads simultaneously. Therefore allowable stresses are
increased by 10%. This increase in the allowable stress is not in
addition to that allowed for erection loads with or without wind or
seismic loads
2. Either of the two horizontal forces specified in table below should be
considered to act along with the vertical loads at a given point of time.

Type of Load Additional Load

a)Vertical forces transferred
to the rails .
(i)For electric overhead 25% of maximum static wheel load.
cranes . 10% of maximum static wheel load.
(ii)For Hnad opertated cranes
.
b)Horrizonatal Forces
transverse to the rails
(i)For electric overhead 10% the weight of crab and the weight of
cranes and the weight lifted on the crane.
(ii)For hand operated crane 5% of the weight of the crab and the weight
lifted on the crane
c)Horrizontal forces along the 5% of the wheel loads
rails

3.The vertical deflection of EOT crane girder should not exceed the values
specified below:

i. Where the cranes are operated manually :L/500

ii. Where the cranes are travelling overhead and operated electrically
upto 500 KN : L/750
iii. Where the cranes are travelling overhead and operated electrically
over 500 KN : L/1000.
iv. Other moving loads as changing cars etc :L/600 where L =span of
gantry girder.

Design

In design of crane girders it is assumed that the lateral load is resisted

entirely by compression flange ( when applied to compression flange level) .
The assumption is fairly justified because if the tension flange is to assist in
resisting the lateral load applied to the compression flange it must be
pushed sideways by the web. But the lateral stiffness of the web is quite
small as compared to that of compression flange. Therefore the assistance
from compression flange may be considered negligible.

Feasablity Study Procedure

1. Find the maximum wheel load.

2. Calculate maximum B.M due to vertical load.
3. Calculate the maximum shear.
4. Calculate the section modulus Z
5. Calculate Moment of Inertia.
6. The bending stress in tension should be less than the permissible
bending stress.
7. The crane girder is checked on 3 frames to check the stability and
feasibility.
8. The lateral forces on the girder and the BMmax and shear due to this
is calculated. The position of wheels shoul be same as step 2& 3
9. The maximum compressive stress due to lateral loads is
calculated;Moment of Inertia required @its yy axis is calculated.
10. The total bending compressive stress is found by adding bending
stresses ,as calculated in step 5 and step 9.It should not exceed the
allowable bending compressive stress.

11. The allowable bending compressive stress σbc is calculated and

increased by 10%.
12. The longitudinal forces along the rail and stresses in longitudinal
direction is calculated.
13. Rivets connecting the channel to I section are designed.
14. The maximum shear stress in the crane girder is checked
15. In any FEM software the wind and the seisic laods are applied
first and than all consequitive loads are applied .
16. The design is checked on SCIA Engineer,
About SCIA
Scia Engineer is an all-in-one platform featuring strong 3D modeling capabilities in a
transparent and intuitive user interface. It features integrated tools for modeling,
exchange of data with third party applications, easy reporting, and more.
17. All checks were found to be satisfied

Conclusion :The 5 Tonne EOT crane in Bay 2 is found be safe and

structurally stable under design loads and load data provided by the
manufacturer. The maximum reactions coming on the base paltes should be
considered for foundation design
