Notes: This document was prepared in July of 2018. As of the writing of this document, the latest version of ATPDraw is
6.2. The atpmingw engine (tpbig.exe) is from the EEUG site and is dated 12/29/2015. PlotXY is dated November 2017.
This installation is geared toward new users. Experienced users may choose different settings or customization. This
installation guide has been successfully tested on Windows 7 and Windows 10.
Windows 7/10 Instructions:
1. Create the folder: ‘C:\ATP’ Note: historically ATP has had difficulty with spaces in path names (e.g.
‘Program Files’). Modern versions of ATPDraw seem to have overcome this obstacle, but it is something to be
aware of. ATPDraw model files (.acp files) cannot have spaces in the filename or the simulations will fail.
Also, ATPDraw creates a configuration file in your profile that must be deleted before you can successfully re‐
install to a different location. Search for the ‘ATPDraw.ini’ file, likely located at:
‘C:\Users\username\AppData\roaming\atpdraw\’.
2. Create the folder: ‘C:\ATP\atpmingw’
3. Create the folder: ‘C:\ATP\PlotXY’
4. Get ATPDraw62_Install.zip (\\hlyfs1\studies\13 Software Executables & Libraries\ATP\). ATPDraw is the
graphical user interface. Extract and run setup.exe. When prompted, browse to the destination folder: ‘C:\ATP’
(the installer will create a subfolder called ‘ATPDraw’).
5. Get atpmingw.zip (\\hlyfs1\studies\13 Software Executables & Libraries\ATP\). This contains the core
1
calculation engine of the program . Extract its contents into the folder ‘C:\ATP\atpmingw’. Go inside that folder
and extract the armafit.zip file into its present location (i.e. into the ‘C:\ATP\atpmingw’ folder).
6. Get PlotXY‐Nov‐2017‐Win.zip (\\hlyfs1\studies\13 Software Executables & Libraries\ATP\). PlotXY is the
plotting program most used with ATPDraw. Extract to a temporary location. The files and folders listed below
will be in a default main folder called ‘PlotXY‐Nov‐2017‐Win’. Copy the files/folders out of their default location
and paste into the ‘C:\ATP\PlotXY’ folder.
a. ‘PlotXY.exe’
b. ‘README FIRST.pdf’ (documentation)
c. ‘Data sets’ folder
d. ‘Documentation’ folder
e. ‘Pro and Object files’ folder
Note: the PlotXY program does not need to be “installed”, the executable works as‐is.
7. Navigate to the ‘C:\ATP\ATPDraw’ folder and run Atpdraw.exe.
8. When prompted, allow creation of folders that do not exist.
1
The ATP core engine requires licensing.
9. Go to the ‘ATP’ menu at the top of the program window and select ‘Setup ATP connection’ from the drop
down menu. Use the following settings:
a.
10. Click ‘Save’ then ‘ok’.
11. On the main ATPDraw screen go to the ‘Tools’ menu item, then ‘Options’. Set the data in the tabs per the
following screenshots. After finishing, click ‘Save’ at the bottom of the ATPDraw Options window, then click
‘Apply’, and finally click ‘ok’.
a.
b.
c.
d.
12. Go to the ‘Tools’ menu item from the main screen and select ‘Save Options’. Close ATPDraw and then open it
again. Open the ‘Setup ATP connection’ wizard (step 9) to confirm previous changes were saved. Do the
same for the ‘Options’ tabs (step 11).
13. Go to the ‘File’ menu item on the main screen and click ‘New’ (we won’t do anything with this file, but this
action enables the next item in the setup sequence). Now go to the ‘ATP’ menu item on the main screen and
click ‘Edit Commands’. Click ‘New’ and enter PlotXY as the name. Click the radio button for ‘Current PL4’ and
enter the path to the ‘PlotXY.exe’ file as shown below. Click ‘Update’ and ‘Exit’. This step links ATPDraw to
the PlotXY program.
14. Go to ‘Tools’ in the main menu and select ‘Save Options’.
At this point the ATPDraw program should be installed and settings retained.
See next page for instructions running a test case.
To test function of the program, try the following:
1. Select ‘File’ and ‘Open’. Navigate to ‘C:\ATP\ATPDraw\Projects\Exa_3.acp’. You should see the following
model for transient switching of a 500 kV transmission. Note that the Exa_*.acp files are standard examples
installed with ATPDraw.
W a ve -imp
BU S BEG EN D
U V V V
500 kV
C_b a nk
2. Select ‘ATP’ and ‘Run ATP’. You should see a black command screen open briefly and then close.
3. Go to ‘ATP’ on the main screen and select ‘View LIS File’ from the drop down menu. If no file opens then the
simulation did not begin and there is likely a problem with your setup. Verify your setup and if necessary
contact an experienced ATP user to resolve.
If the file opens, scroll through it. If you see the following somewhere in the text, then the simulation started,
but did not solve. This type of error is likely due to a problem with the model. The error message is followed
by information relating to the component and/or nature of the problem.
4. If you don’t see the ‘You lose, fella’ error message then the simulation generally completed. Close the LIS file
window. In the main program window click ‘ATP’ then ‘PlotXY.exe’ which should be an option below ‘Edit
Commands’ (installation step 13). You should see this:
5. Click on v:ENDA and v:BEGA. These are traces for phase A voltages of nodes ‘END’ and ‘BEG’ (both ends of the
transmission line). Then click ‘Plot’. You should see:
If you see the above, then congratulations ‘fella’! You have successfully installed the program.
