Classroom Observation Assignment

Observation Form 1

Observation Date: April 10, 2019 Observation Time: Two Hours Class Period

Teacher Observed: Mr. Olushola Ibrahim Subject/Grade Level: Grade 6

School Observed: Nigerian Tulip Int’l Colleges Observer: Sumeyye Havva Unal__

1-What was/were the learning objectives/outcomes of the lesson? (Add state objectives if
known)

The learning objectives were mentioned verbally and the teacher also wrote them on board in
bulletin form. I see that it’s quite helpful for the students. They have chance to see it on board at
least for a while, till he cleans the board.

2-How did the teacher begin and end the lesson?

Teacher asked the students about the previous topic and asked 3-4 questions about the topic. This
brief revision was very helpful in order to remind them the previous topic once again. And it also
helps to attract their attention in shorter time. And when the teacher wanted to conclude the
lesson, he asked several questions about the topic they have just learned.

3-What did the teacher use for teaching materials or instructional aids/equipment?

Actually, the teacher didn’t use anything that I can see. At least, for the lesson I observed he
didn’t use any material. However, he was very active during the lesson and it seemed students
were having fun. Maybe we can say that he was using oral materials or body language.

4-Which instructional methods and strategies did the teacher use?

His basic method was lecturing method because it was an English language subject. But his way
of blending the lecturing, demonstrating, game method was amazing. The students had fun and it
seemed they were full engaged.
5-How did the teacher assess learning?

He was quite formal. Asking questions and expecting the answers for a while, then giving the
feedback. Basically, he assessed learning formally and oral.

6- What can you say about the teacher’s philosophy/beliefs and style? (Traditional,
progressive, behaviorist, student-centered vs. teacher centered, authoritative etc)

When you read the report about the lesson you will think he is a traditional teacher who abides
on formal and traditional techniques. He was also user of teacher centered method. But in fact
when I observed the class I realized that it’s all about the way you present yourself and your
method.

7-How does the teacher manage classroom? Can you identify classroom management
techniques used?

The classroom wasn’t available to resettlement, because the desks were fixed to the floor as
traditional style. But still in this class I didn’t see any extreme problem regarding class
management. Just 1 boy was reading book at the back seat, yet he was attending.

8-Observe in the classroom setting and determine types of behavior students play when off-
task. What do they do when they are not paying attention? How does the teacher re-direct
them or get them back on task?

Well, this scene was observed mostly right after a joke and a laughter. Students were finding
themselves hard to come back to class after a funny moment. And that moment teacher clapped
his hands 4-5 times by inviting them back to the lesson.

9-How does the teacher communicate with students (verbal, vocal, meta-verbal or non-verbal
communication such as facial, body language, use of space, motion and time?)

To me, it seemed teacher knew the students very well. He always called them by their names.
And his pace was fast time to time, this was mostly when they were answering one word-answer
questions. Apart from that time he was normal.

10-Who were the students in the class? What did you notice about them? (Background,
diversity, attitude, motivation, interaction, participation, etc)

Since all students were participating, I guess all their academic performances were similar. At
least for this English language class. But I observed 1 slow student, he was sitting in front desk
and he was copying the notes quite slow. Even that student raised his hand and answered 1-2
questions.

11-What did you see that is effective in engaging students? What do you see that is
ineffective in keeping students engaged?

When the teacher is very active in class there is no problem to engage the students. Involving
students, making jokes and making them laugh helps a lot in keeping them engaged. In this class
I observed I didn’t observe any other method that is ineffective in keeping them engage

12-What are the two instructional strategies you observed and would like to apply in your
classroom?

The warming up strategy is quite helpful and necessary. Additional to this demonstrating method
is also good to stick to. But I don’t think I can be very active like him, instead I would prepare
some solid materials to be used by them.

13-What are two important classroom management strategies that you observed and would
like to apply in your classroom?

As I mentioned earlier there was no chance for him to use different seating arrangement in class.
For me, different types of sitting arrangements are very necessary. apart from this walking
around and talking to students constantly is a way to class management. Because by doing so
you show them that you are always awake and wouldn’t allow anything that would distract the
others.
