Experiment 1.- 03.10.

2018
The aim of this session was to check velocity of sound using the provided equations. We
used different methods to see how and if the results will vary.

We can calculate the velocity using two equations:

1st (velocity of moving body) 2nd (velocity of sound in air)

V ≈ 331.4 + 0.6Tc
Where: Where:
V -> velocity (m/s) V -> velocity of sound in air (m/s)
d -> distance (m) Tc _> temperature (°C)
t -> time (s)

Methods:
1a: Mr Andrew acted as “the emitter” and moved 100m away from group acting as
receiver. The emitter was clapping his hands over his head while receiver was trying to
measure the time between seeing the clap and hearing it.

1b: The emitter and receiver stand next to each other 100m away from building wall. The
emitter was clapping while receiver was trying to measure the time between seeing the clap
and hearing the sound reflected by wall.

2: A microphone (receiver) was placed 6.2m away from loudspeaker (emitter) generating
Pink Noise. Computer measured the time between emitting and receiving the sound in
milliseconds.
Results:
V≈331.4+0.6xT≈331.4+0.6x8≈336.2 m/s Vsound in air≈336.2 m/s
1a:
d=100m t=0.35s
V=d/t=100m/0.35s=285.7 m/s V1a = 285.7 m/s

1b:
d=200m t=0.69s
v=d/t=200m/0.69s=289.86 m/s V1b=289.86 m/s

2:
The distance measured by PC is different than distance measured by laser because sound
needs to be converted by a sound card from analog to digital first. Computer gave us a time
result in milliseconds.
dlaser=6.2m dPC=8.08m tlaser=? tPC=23.5ms=0.0235s
VPC=8.08m/0.0235s VPC=343.83 m/s
VPC=Vlaser and t=d/V
tlaser=6.2m/343.83ms-1 tlaser=0.018s

tPC - tlaser = time delay 0.0235-0.018=0.0055s

time delay=0.0055s <- time needed to convert the audio from analog to digital

Conclusions:
The predicted velocity vary from the results we got by measuring the time in method 1a and
1b due to human factor occurring. It takes time for a brain to process the information from
an eye and send signal to hand to press the stopwatch, that’s why the receiver wasn’t
pressing the button fact enough.
Result we got from PC in method 2 was much more accurate than method 1 as there was no
human factor involved. It still was different than predicted value and the reason might be
that actual temperature was different than the one we had from weather app.
