Free trade agreements allow countries to exchange goods or services free of tariff restrictions or
with very little interest, which means that the product to be exported or imported is marketed
A few years ago Colombia carried out the FTA with the first world power and this was a boost
for the increase of exports and imports between both countries, this treaty was approved on
October 12, 2011 and came into force on May 15, 2012.
The FTA between Colombia and the United States is a negotiation which I join the effort of
dialogues and agreements treated for more than 22 months which the Colombian government
wanted to give merit to its products in a market as demanding as the North American and in
addition to that the which would receive special treatment by being part of the ATPA and
ATPDEA (Andean preference law and Andean trade promotion and drug eradication law), which
is a US law that allows tariff-free access to more than 6000 items of Colombian products to the
market. This treaty gives merit to the efforts of small and large Colombian producers which

generate a positive change in the foreign market as well as in the interior of the country and
reveals and highlights the unique qualities that represent our country, this treaty demonstrates the
exclusivity of the Colombian export and the desired products are markets abroad. This
commercial integration with the largest market in the world makes Colombia a potential exporter
and makes us a focus of foreign investment which ensures the economic growth of our country.
Some studies show that the growth of the economy may be 4.2% as a result of the FTA and
generate employment at least 380 thousand jobs in a period of 5 years from the effectiveness of
the same. A study conducted by the bank of the republic estimated that in the period of 2007 and
23 chapters and several annexes, the chapters include general provisions, customs procedures,
cross-border services, financial services, rules of origin, sanitary and phytosanitary measures,
One of the sectors that benefited most from this treaty was agriculture because its tariff levels
were very low and even some products did not have restrictions for export.
