Parent Information Night Script

Slide 1/2: Good evening parents and welcome to the year three religious education
information night. I would like to start the evening off with a prayer to
welcome you all here tonight. If we could all please join me in making the
sign of the cross…In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy
Spirit, Amen. (Reads prayer)

Side 3: The purpose of tonight is for you to see what your children will be doing over
the next five week in Religious education. I have developed a five week unit
that I will talk more about later, on the unit of Church. The agender for
tonight, will be to first look at the unit that I have created for the students
and the key learning points that the students will be engaging in and learning.
I will discuss the teaching and assessment strategies that I have implemented
to assess the students and to address a diverse range of learning needs. We
will discuss something you can do at home to support your child in the
development of their religious capabilities and ways you can connect home
and school. To conclude the session, we will look at examples of activities and
work the students will participate in.

Slide 4: This unit is broken down into three key understanding: Human person, Jesus
and Church. Human person relates to the personal experiences that the
students have and focusing on the experiences in the students life. In the first
key learning point on the slide, the students will learn about our family as a
community and how we participate in our families and our communities. The
topic of Jesus relates to how we see Jesus in our lives. The second key
learning point, creates a link between the human experiences and Jesus.
Students will learn what god’s family is and the similarities and differences
between participating in our family and God’s family to see the strong link
between the two. The last four key learning points relate to the topic of
church. Mary is a significant part of the unit the students will witness godly
play around scripture stories about Mary that depict her as a role model. The
student relates this back to their own experiences in identifying who in their
own lives are roles model. The students learn about the Angelus and its
purpose and feast days that are used to celebrate Mary. Throughout this unit
I contribute many personal experiences to assist students in making their
own connections and understanding the concepts at a person level.

Slide 5: Throughout this unit, the teaching and learning strategies that I have
implemented have been put in place to attend to all students learning styles.
I have done this by including activities for whole class, small group and
individual work to enable all students to work in a way that is conducive to
their learning. Collaborative learning is in place for students to feed off other
students ideas in order to engage in the topic, this also builds on students
social skills and presentation skills. Independent learning strategies are used
to show what the students have learnt without the assistance of their peers.
The use of ICT is also implemented in both collaborative learning and
independent learning to address the general capability of ICT. This inclusion
of ICT helps students gain and improve their researching skills, typing skills
and online collaboration skills. Using ICT also stems enjoyment and creativity
from the students which allows them to engage in the task to their best
ability.

Throughout this unit, there are many opportunities for cross curricular
learning, with the students engaging in writing, presentation and editing
tasks that links with the English curriculum. The student engage in many role
play activities which link with the drama curriculum. In the early weeks the
students create Venn diagrams to discuss similarities and differences which
link to the Mathematics curriculum and researching skills that relate to the
HASS curriculum.

Assessment is an integral part of teaching and learning. Many diagnostic,

formative and summative assessment strategies are used within this unit of
work to gage the students understanding and knowledge of the concepts
taught. The use of assessment will assist me in planning future tasks to assist
students further, if they did not understand a task or require further
extension. These assessment will be recorded and used when creating their
final grade for religious education. The assessment strategy I follow is the
teach, plan, asses cycle, therefore, the unit I have created will be added and
edited throughout the unit to cater for the students’ needs closely. I’ve
aimed to create a safe and fun learning environment to help the students feel
open and motivated to learn.

Slide 6: Another important element of this religious education program, it is

important for the students to have appropriate home support and
integration so that there is consistency between home and school. Can you
please write two things that you think you can do at home to support your
child’s religious education development. Once you have written this down,
you can come forward and stick them on the whiteboard.
*Teacher will go through and read out parents ideas*

Slide 7: In the first week the students will be creating their own family tree. If you
could please bring in a photocopied family photo that the students can cut
and glue to use for that activity that would be beneficial to them. You are
welcome to bring it in early and I can keep them until it is time for them to
use it.

During this unit of work some ways you can assist your child in their religious
development includes directing prayer, discussing memories and looking at
photos from family traditions they have taken part in. Having meaningful
conversations about what the student have learnt in religious education is
also beneficial as it relates the topic back to the students everyday life.

Slide 8: Here are some examples of the work the students will be engaging in during
this unit. We will be reading a children’s literature book called counting on
communities, using our hands prints to draw and depict that God’s family is
diverse. Students will be given the open ended task of discuss what the
family of God is and the students will create a cartoon strip to show the
actions of Mary being a role model. As you can see, these a range of tasks
allow students to show their learning through a range of different styles such
as pictorially or with words.

On the students desks, they have each placed out their favourite three pieces
of work. I invite you all to find your students desks to see some of the work
they have created in religion so far.
*Teacher will give parents time to explore work students have already
completed*

Slide 9: I would like to thank you all for coming tonight, I hope this evening has been
informative and you go away from this with a great knowledge about what
will be happening over the next five weeks in Religion. I believe Religious
education should be a time of day that is reflective, pleasant and welcoming
for all and I aim to encompass this in every lesson.
