PEPSI Screening
Nevaeh Johnson is a ten-year-old girl who currently lives in Las Vegas Nevada. She
shares her home with her brother, sister, mother, stepfather, and the family cat and dog. She is a
military brat who was born in Wichita, Kansas which is the place she still considers home. She is
a fifth grader at Coral Academy on the Nellis Air Force base which is a private school. Nevaeh
has a small social circle which include four main friends according to her.
Nevaeh is in great health and has no complaints. Nevaeh is considered to be a straight A student
by her mother and the looks of her report card she only has issues in the subject of math. She had
no choice to do this paper since I am her step-father which is why I picked her.
Physical Development
Nevaeh is above average healthy weight for her age and height with a weight of 107
pounds and a height of 49 inches. We see a BMI of 21(Healthy Kids 2018). This could cause
problems as she continues to grow such as asthma; sleep problems; hip, knee and ankle
problems; and high cholesterol or blood pressure. This height and weight put her in the 80-
percentile range for her age. According to the text Psychology Applied to Teaching, asserts,
“Physical Characteristics: Elementary Both boys and girls become leaner and stronger” Nevaeh
believes she has become leaner and stronger since she has grown and her weight has maintained
roughly the same in the last couple of years along with her ability to lift heavier objects such as
more grocery bags after shopping. I agree with Nevaeh as I have seen her begin to grown into
Nevaeh does not get much physical exercise as she claims she really only goes outside
during recess. According to Kidshealth.org Nevaeh should be getting at least one hour of
vigorous physical activity a day, along with partaking in several bouts of 15 minutes of physical

activity or more each day. Last, Nevaeh spends a lot of time on her iPad, Nintendo DS, and
sitting in class. More than the recommended time of no more than 2 hours. This lack of physical
activity and longtime of sitting can be a contributing factor to the above average weight we see
with her. Nevaeh is not interested in playing any sports except swimming which could help with
the lack of physical activity. Nevaeh’s mother notes that occasionally they will go for walks or
family runs that do help with the physical exercise but she does not believe it is enough to
maintain a healthy lifestyle she hopes for. Nevaeh’s mother also notes that too much time spent
Nevaeh’s diet consists of mainly homemade “Meat and Potatoes” meals. Type II diabetes
runs in the family and is a big scare of Nevaeh’s mother who continues to try and make healthy
alternative meals in which are lower in carbs and sugars. Unfortunately, lack of exercise, above
average weight, and high carbs and sugar meals are not helping the prevention of getting diabetes

Emotional Development
to Teaching, Children in this stage start to find, “self”. By “self’ the text is referring to self-
description, self-esteem, self-concept, and self-image. All these “self’s” are a child finding out
who they are as a person and how they see themselves. This helps a child have their own identity
Self-description, Nevaeh has shown she knows her own description. She knows what she
likes and doesn’t like. Comparing herself to others and maintaining her own identity. Nevaeh
understands how other may see her as a “nerd” but claims she doesn’t care what other think
because she is doing what she likes and that’s all that matters. She does not get embarrassed easy
Self-esteem, Nevaeh shows she has an average self-esteem. She is happy in her own
body. Doing task around the house and maintaining good grades help increase her “self-worth”.
The more Nevaeh contribute to others around her the higher her Self-esteem will get. Nevaeh’s
mom suggest she do sports to help boost her self-esteem and teacher her to interact with more
appearance, and social interaction. Nevaeh is comfortable in her own body and with her
personality. This shows excellent traits and helps boost the learning process in the classroom.
When a child is comfortable and confident they tend to tackle harder more difficult task

presented to them. This Helps Nevaeh’s academic performance. Though Nevaeh has few friends
she believes she, “keeps the good and leaves the bad”. This helps her maintain strong friendship
Self-image, through the other “selfs” we talked about we can conclude that Nevaeh’s
self-image is very positive. The contributing factors to this is her parents support, teachers
support., friends, and task she completes. Maintaining a positive self-image helps the student to
become a better learner. With a positive self-image the student is highly driven and more

Philosophical Development
As a ten-year-old girl Nevaeh is now moving through the phase of life known as the
“what” stage. Before the “What” stage was the “Why” stage. Asking herself questions such as,
“Why does this happen?”, “Why do I want to do this”, and “Why am I here on this earth.” Now
she has moved into the “What” stage. Asking question now like, “What role do I play on life? ”,.
pg. 5
PEPSI SCREENING PROJECT
Making this transition is very important in the learning process. You begin to use already
stored information in the “Why” phase and transition it into the “What” phase. This helps
become more well-rounded as a student as Nevaeh begins the understanding the big picture of
life instead of what’s just in front of her. This is the beginning stages of the big quest of life for
Nevaeh.
Nevaeh says she is now starting the think about the future and what her plans are in this
life. She wants to go to college and succeed as a student. She is still undecided on a career path
which is to be expected as a child this age. Nevaeh believes that she has a good grasp on life but
still continues to ask the, “Why” questions a lot. She believes it is because she is just curious on
why she should be doing somethings or why her parents are asking her to do some things.
Another big part of Philosophical Development is the rules and following the rules. At
this age in life students are known for following the rules given to them by their parents or
teachers. Students believes the parents rule and disobeying to not an option as a child. Nevaeh is
far from a rule breaker who only makes mistakes when she is forgetful. She never breaks a rule
on purpose and continues to hold herself to a high standard to insure good discipline.
Social Development
Around this age is when students are known for belonging in clubs and having secret
language. This age often the child is called the pleasant, docile, obedient, and happy. This is also
the last stage the child is totally confident in parents in adults. Social development is huge in a
child growth when relating to the Maslow’s hierarchy on need with belonging and love. As the
child goes to class and comes home they need to feel loved and like the belong in that setting to

Nevaeh does not participate in any sports but did belong in the Art Club while it was still
available at school. She also says she has a close group of friends she refers to as the Pokémon
group which could be considered a club that she is in during recess at school. I often see her
talking in words that aren’t complete saying things like “eeerr” or “aaah”. When asked what they
meant she would just say I do not understand and it something she does with her friends at
school.
When asking Nevaeh’s mom about the pleasant, docile, obedient, and happy words to
describe Nevaeh she said only a few describe her. Nevaeh is not docile she is very active and in
your face kind of girl when she wants to be but also can be laid back relaxed at other times
focusing on certain task. Obedient was one that was on the fence. Nevaeh listens to orders but is
very forgetful when it comes to doing something later rather than right when told. For example,
if she is told at 5 o’clock she needs to empty the dishwasher before she goes to bed. She will
forget that night and have to be reminded the following day. As for being happy Nevaeh claims
she is very happy at where she is in very happy and only thing that makes her not happy is when
she can’t go to a friend’s house which is a good sign that overall, she is a happy person.
Intellectual Development
conversations that are clearer with a consistent flow of information. The ability to share ideas
and insight with fellow students. All these are big expectations of a 10-year-old that aren’t quite
Metacognitive thinking for Nevaeh is there but lacking in some aspects. She doesn’t seem
to wonder why she is thinking the things she thinks or why she may need to ask certain questions

when it come to a problem. This will begin to develop soon but as of right now Nevaeh is a little
Nevaeh has lost almost all her interest in science. About two years ago she was very
interested in sciences and received many sciences related gifts for Christmas including a build
your own gem, robots, and a telescope. Now Nevaeh is not interested at all and would rather do
art projects or play video games on her DS. She could quite explain why she lost interest but I
would assume she is more interested in doing other projects than science projects.
The biggest thing not only I see but so does Nevaeh’s mother is her ability to talk to other
students or friends about intelligent topics and insight. Nevaeh can literally walk another kid
through an entire game on the DS or through the process of how she created an art project. Not
only can she do it with her interest but she can also tell them why her parents do certain things or
why you need to do certain things on a homework assignment. I would say she is ahead of her
Conclusion
Physically, Nevaeh is above her average weight goals showing sign of future obesity. Her
lack of exercise and outdoor activity lead me to believe that. I suggest Nevaeh get at least 60 min
of proper exercise every day to hopefully maintain a good weight. I also suggest getting Nevaeh
enrolled in a sport to ensure she is maintaining a good activity level. Nevaeh has a lot to improve
Emotionally, Nevaeh knowing one’s self is the best thing at this age. The fact of her
knowing where she is and who she is helps her development. I don’t have too many suggestions
for this other than maintain one’s self and know how others see you. Nevaeh is strong and knows
exactly what she wants in life and that’s what helps her know herself.

Nevaeh is a little behind on the Philosophical stage of life. The transition from why to
what is a big developmental step that she will need to take. Seeing the big picture in a situation is
very important in learning. I suggest she begins to dig deeper into questions she is asked and
what stage of life she is in. I also suggest that she begin. Understanding more of how things work
and not just being ok with lack of knowing. I talked with her mother and suggested she begin
explaining certain. Things and life and what make up those certain things for Nevaeh to better
understand.
Social is a rather difficult topic for Nevaeh. Her strong friendships and the close bond
they have is very important for her development. I believe she should participate in bigger group
activities and make new friends rather than be ok with the ones she has right now. It is very
important to be able to have multiple friends with different hobbies and likes this helps Nevaeh
become a more rounded person. I suggested to her mother that she be signed up for a bigger
Intellectually I suggest Nevaeh begins to open up and begin to think about more
activities. Instead of focusing on just one thing she likes I suggest she begins to start other task in
different subjects. This will help her become a more round learning who is ready for any task
given. I suggested to her mother that she buys her books on different subjects that she can read
