PLANNING OVERVIEW – TERM
Year Level Unit Title Human development topic Jesus Topic
4 Lent: Easter People show love and Jesus forgives and shows mercy
forgiveness Spiritual and corporal works of
God always forgives mercy make the world a better place
Overview – explanation of the content of the unit and how it explores the Salvation Topic and development of the Human Person

This unit explores the topic of Lent (Easter) with a focus on how God and Jesus showed forgiveness and mercy; the Sacrament of
Penance, the Spiritual and Corporal works of Mercy, the significance of the cross, and how followers of Jesus can show love,
forgiveness and mercy during Lent. As students have already completed the Sacrament of Penance in year 3, students are given a
new focus of how to say ‘no’ out of love to others.

Students will be looking at different Children’s literature that relates to the learning point or key understanding, this allows students
to make further contextual understanding of the learning points.

Students will be completing work samples in most of the lessons which are compiled into their final piece of work; a Lent booklet.
Lessons coincide with cross-curricular activities (English & Art), where students are given more time to edit and complete their work
samples. Students will assemble their work samples across the 5 weeks to create the booklet, self-assessing using the same rubric
the teacher will use.

Catholic World View and Teacher Witness (See Teacher Note) Link with Key Understandings and Learning Points by highlighting

Catholic Worldview:
The Catholic worldview on Lent [Easter] is the season and days of penance. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church these
are intense days of the Church’s penitential practice (CCC 1438). The CCC expresses that during this time it is particularly
appropriate for spiritual exercises, penitential liturgies, and charitable and missionary works (CCC 1438). This also allows for the
process of conversion and repentance that has been described by Jesus in parables (i.e. the parable of the prodigal son) (CCC
1439).

Teacher witness:
As a Catholic teacher, it is essential to role model to students and openly talk about my Catholic traditions. During Lent, my family
comes together for an early breakfast. We then go on an outing together, this can be to the beach with our dog or on a hike;
generally somewhere outdoors where we personally feel closer to God. For lunch we usually come together with a few other families
(generally eating fish),
