of India’s ‘Neighbourhood
First’ policy, and both coun-
tries are incomplete without
each other, Prime Minister
Narendra Modi said in
Janakpur on Friday, kick-
starting his two-day, all-im-
portant visit to the Himala-
yan nation.
Modi and his Nepalese
counterpart KP Sharma Oli
flagged off a direct bus ser-
vice between Janakpur and
Ayodhya. The service is part
of the Ramayana Circuit to
promote religious tourism in
both countries. “For centu-
ries, the ties between Ayod-
hya and Janakpur have been
unbreakable. This is a his-
toric moment,” Modi said.
“Without Nepal, India’s

of a densely populated Pa-
harganj, lies a 14th century
marvel, Qila Qadam Sharif,
a tomb where Emperor
Firuz Shah Tughlaq’s son
rests in peace.
The Sultan had built it for him-
self but his son’s untimely death
meant the prince found burial
space here.
Lying in abject neglect, a huge
fort-like structure stood tall here
once. Today, it’s reduced to an open
space amid the clutter where kids
play cricket.
A market for manufacturing ar-
tificial leather commonly known
as rexine is the landmark for those
visiting this medieval monument.
Tughlaq’s son, Fateh Khan died
in 1376, and the Sultan decided to
bury him in the tomb. The sacred
stone footprints of Prophet Mu-
hammed brought from Mecca were
safely placed in the Dargah.
This gave it the name Qadam
(feet) Sharif.
Today, Qadam Sharif is merely
a home to the family of Farid-ud-
din, the Khadeem of the Dargah.
He claims lineage to the family
entrusted with taking care of the
dargah by the Sultan himself.
Other than the main dargah,
the campus has a few more rooms
where the family lives and runs a
makeshift workshop, putting to-
gether ladies’ bags.
As he shows around, his two
sons are busy putting together the
bags that they sell in the market
outside to run their home.
“The then Muttalawi, Haji Syed
Shamshuddin Misri, was married
to Tughlaq’s sister and was thus
given the responsibility of main-
taining this place. Our family has
since lived here and we will not
part with this ever. We have lived
here for 13 to 14 generations now,”
says Farid-ud-din who lives here
with his wife, daughter and
two sons.
The dargah is mostly close,
receiving only a few visitors.
During an occasional game of
cricket inside the tomb, the shut
door is converted into a target for
the bowler to get the batsman out.
In other words, the door that has
remnants of royalty serves as the
wicket or stumps.
At the main entrance of the cam-
pus, one is greeted by an old wood-
en gate with one panel missing.
“People in Delhi are not really
aware about this place. It’s the for-
eign tourists who read about it and
usually come here.”
Paharganj, adjoining the New
Delhi Railway Station, is a central-
ly-located international tourist hub
with hotels and lodges that suit all
pockets making it a popular desti-
nation for long and short stays.
Wearing a grey kurta-pyjama,
the Khadeem, in his mid 40s,
proudly says he was born here.
Khadeem recalls the tales
passed on to him by his forefathers
and is nonchalant to the cracks on
the dome. “When I was born there
(pointing to a tiny room), huge
rock-like structures jutted out
from the roof and one had to liter-
ally crawl to enter the room.”
Qila Qadam Sharif was once a
big site with massive gates, walls
and a tomb space in the core.
Over the years, the whole area
around Qadam Sharif has become
a part of present day Paharganj
known for its chaos and disorder.
The big walls that once donned
the campus have now disappeared.
The annual ‘Urs’ is celebrated
here on Prophet’s birthday when
the slab with the footprints is tak-
en out and immersed in water.
This water is then served as offer-
ing to the devotees.
The family is reluctant to hand
over the Dargah to either Archaeo-
logical Survey of India (ASI) or the
Waqf Board. “Nobody has taken
care of it for so long. What will
they do now? All they will do is ka-
bza (forceful possession)” says
Farid-Ud-din.
Qadam Sharif is one among sev-
eral monuments, a part of Delhi’s
heritage, which have died a slow
death over the years. Is adopting
monuments the way forward?
Recently, Red Fort, a 17th-centu-
ry world heritage site, was adopted
by the Dalmia Bharat group, an In-
dian conglomerate which won the
bid to adopt the iconic struc-
ture. While historians show
concern over the adoption, the

heritage erosion back to the Parti-
tion days.

rich cultural heritage.
“While adoption is a good idea,
but it is not a new scheme. It has
just been rebranded and re-
launched. Many private schools
are already adopting the rich her-
itage of this city,” he said.
Encroachments and illegal oc-
cupation have ruined these archi-
tectural wonders that barely exist
in Delhi’s heritage now.
Monuments which are not of
national importance are taken
care of by the state’s archaeology
department. These state depart-
ments do not have any budgets and
thus are not able to do much.
Sohail Hashmi, a renowned his-
torian, points out that the Munici-
pal Corporation of Delhi (MCD)
and the New Delhi Municipal
Council (NDMC) were asked to
come up with the list of the re-
maining monuments, which are

One of the first lists of monu-
ments was created by Maulvi Zafar
Hasan, an archaeologist with the
Archaeological Survey of India
(ASI) that were worthy of preserva-
tion in 1916. It featured 1,317 build-
ings in the Capital, of which 174 are
currently protected by the ASI.
In his book ‘Monuments of
Delhi: Lasting Splendor of the
Great Mughals and Others’, Hasan
has listed all small and large struc-
tures that once existed in Delhi.
However, today, there is no clear
official record of the heritage sites
in Delhi as many have either
ceased to exist or are nowhere
close to their original avatar.
Before Hasan, Sir Sayyid
Ahmed Khan, a renowned reform-
er and educationist, wrote the first
compilation of Delhi’s rich herit-
age in his book ‘Asar-us-Sanadid’
(or Athar-ud-Sanadid). Originally
published in 1846 in Urdu lan-
guage, the book is divided into
four parts and records all of Del-
hi’s heritage.
Hijre ka Gumbad
Few would know about Hijre ka
Gumbad that once existed in the
lawns of India Gate, a war memo-
rial and an iconic part of Delhi’s
heritage built by the British. It was
a protected monument back in 1916
when Zafar Hasan wrote his book.

He says the dome and the arches
were made of brick and a portion
of the dome already fallen. It ap-
pears to have been a tomb, but there
is no trace of any grave, Hasan aads
in his book. If one is to belive
Hasan, deterioration came early to
Hijre ka Gumbad — as early as 1916.
Today, there is no sign of any
such monument there.
Though there is no documenta-
tion of the story behind the Gum-
bad, heritage activists believe that
it belonged to one of the castrated
slave warriors.
It is present in Hasan’s listing
from 1916. It is believed that when
India Gate’s foundation stone was
laid on February 10, 1921, the area
was cleared out and that is when

their skills and discipline in battle.

the land was handed over to such
soldiers as a substiture for salaries.
Today, the crowded C-hexagon
aka the India Gate roundabout at-
tracts busy men and women and
tourists, but not even a single curi-
ous soul. Who would, after all, be-
lieve that there once existed a
structure, just a century ago, dedi-
cated to an eunuch?
Kalu Sarai Masjid
Just 500 meters from the Vijay Man-
dal Enclave in Kalu Sarai area of
South Delhi, in the narrow bylanes
of the area, lies a historical jewel
that even the time has forgotten.
It is difficult to believe that
once, the Masjid Kalu Sarai, was a
sight to behold. Today, the govern-
ment apathy has left the structure
in a state of extreme disrepair.
The bigger problem, however, is
the people who have settled in the
mosque premises. Families from
all over the country have lived in
the mosque for decades, and subse-
quently, have done irreversible
damage to the structure. They do
not allow anyone to enter the prem-
ises to conduct a survey. Sources
said the residents have kept dogs
as pets specifically for the purpose
of terrorising the visitors.
Two years ago, Jamiat Ulama-i-
Hind, one of the leading Islamic
organisations in India, as part of
its programme to reopen the closed
mosques in Delhi, had visited the
Kalu Sarai mosque. Their team
was attacked by dogs.
The Feroz Shah Kotla tower
A painting by Thomas Daniells, a
landscape painter in the 18th cen-
tury who spent seven years in In-
dia painting the scenes of Delhi, a
tower can be seen in the Firoz Shah
Kotla Fort. This tower does not ex-
ist anymore. The fortress, now in a
bad condition, was built by Firoz
Shah Tughlaq and currently hous-
es one of the Ashokan Pillars,
Jami Masjid, and a Baoli. People
come here for Thursday prayers.
Whoever said “Kyun mata-e-dil
ke lut jaane ka koi gham kare,
shahr-e-dilli mein to aise vaqiye
hote rahe (Why should someone
cry over a broken heart (dil lut-
na), such incidents are common
in a city like Delhi)” was proba-
bly right.

A 23-year-old woman’s calls to

the New Delhi Railway Station
on Thursday. The student of
architecture from Jamia Milia
Islamia University had to fight
her way through the harass-
ment alone as the Delhi Police
did not turn up at the spot to
save her despite repeated calls.
The accused, Khurshid (50), a
rickshaw-puller has been ar-
rested.
According to the victim, the
incident occurred at around
6.30 pm. “I was standing outside
the New Delhi Metro Station
looking for a rickshaw to Paha-
rganj when a drunk rickshaw-
puller came running after me
and forced me to go with him.”

cessionaire to install 1.4 lakh
CCTVs in different parts of
the city. The AAP-led govern-
ment had said work would be
completed by October this
year.
Kejriwal sought an ap-
pointment with Modi and
requested him to order Bai-
jal to allow the installation
of CCTV cameras, saying
that as it was related to wom-
en safety there should be no
politics over the issue.
“The process to install
CCTV cameras was to begin
for which budget was passed.
All objections regarding the
project were cleared. The
Cabinet had also given its
nod...contract was given to
Centre’s company BEL...But,
your L-G suddenly created
hurdles. He (L-G) formed a
committee on the (CCTV)
project without informing
us. Why was this committee
constituted when the process
was completed and installa-
tion of CCTV cameras was to
start...? What will this com-
mittee do?,” Kejriwal said in
his letter.

HC rejects
Yadav’s plea
The Delhi High Court on Friday
rejected Vikas Yadav’s plea,
who is in jail for life for the mur-
der of Nitish Katara, to be pre-
sent in person during the hear-
ing of his plea seeking furlough.
Justice SP Garg denied the plea
saying there was no need for
him to be present during hear-
ing of his petition.
Furlough is a right of a pris-
on inmate to have leave for a
certain period of time in a year
when he can come out of jail. It
is counted towards the total pe-
riod of his sentence. The prison
authorities may deny the relief
in certain cases.
The HC also agreed to hear
on July 20 a separate plea moved
by Katara’s mother Neelam Ka-
tara alleging that Vishal Yadav,
also serving jail term in the
same case, and his brother
Vivek lied to court in the plea
for parole moved by Yadav. Ya-
dav in his plea for parole, which
was rejected by the high court
on April 20, had sought the re-
lief to sell a property to arrange
funds for his family. Vivek had
signed on the petition on behalf

Gurugram on Friday saw
heavy security deployment ow-
ing to disruptions in the last
few weeks caused after Hary-
ana’s Chief Minister’s com-
ment that Namaz should not be
offered in open spaces. The
Gurugram Police was deployed
at several locations including

prayers. Amid this, the Delhi
Waqf Board confirmed that all
processions went peacefully
and Namaz was offered at over
35 locations.

in Jharsa, Badshahpur, Bhond-
si, Naurangpur, Farukh Nagar,
Khurrampur, Dhankot, Daulat-
pur, Fazilpur, Mouika, Wa-
zirabad, and Garhi Harsaru.
While the fate of these mosques
is still unknown, the open
spaces are under security.

The Delhi Police on Friday ar-
rested all accused including
four men and apprehended two
minor girls for the murder of a
21-year-old boy, Neeraj, who
was honey-trapped by a minor
girl and her friend in Southeast
Delhi’s Govindpuri area last
Sunday. It was Neeraj’s name
tattooed on his right arm that
led the police to his murderers.
His body was found in a forest
area near Tughlakabad.
The accused has been identi-
fied as Shiv Kumar, who pre-
pares legal documents for advo-
cates. Kumar had hatched the
plan to kill Neeraj, a resident

Ankit Chadha was one of the
very few storytellers from the
present day to have carried for-
ward the values of humanity,
derived from dohas of great
saints like Kabir, through word
of mouth. Unfortunately, the
messenger passed away too
soon on Wednesday night near
Pune, where he allegedly
drowned in a lake.
Chadha, a famous storytell-
er from Pant Nagar in Jangpu-
ra, regularly used Kabir’s do-
has in his conversations. His
family performed the final rites
on Friday morning. Chadha
was in Pune to perform Dastan-
e-Kabir at the Gyaan Adab Cen-
tre on Saturday last week.
“We still feel that he will en-
ter the house and talk to us. He
would always answer back in a
form of doha. There was some-
thing in his presence, we all
used to feel happy. He was such
a positive person and so
Ankit Chadha performed dastangoi at Harvard, Yale and Toronto University
and gave speeches on the art form as well
grounded. We will never be able
to fill this void,” said Shipra
Chadha, his sister-in-law.
With his love for storytell-
ing, Chadha’s mother always
took the same route when she
wanted to explain anything to
him. “If she wanted to explain
anything to Ankit, she always
used to narrate it in a form of
story and we all used to laugh
on their conversation. It was
from her that Ankit inherited
the art of storytelling,” Shipra
said. A simple man by heart, he
never believed in any religion,
his family said.
Ankit’s death is not the first
tragedy that the Chadha’s be-
moan. 14 years ago, the family
lost their daughter in a case of
medical negligence. Ankit’s fa-
ther was fighting a case against
a private hospital since the past
14 years. “Our father is com-
pletely broken now. For the last
14 years, he has been fighting
for his daughter. We won the
case last month but he has giv-
en all his life to this case. And
gone too soon

encroachments in area

Task Force (STF) is contniu-
ing with the anti-encroach-
ment drive, traders in the
posh Khan Market are an
anxious lot after the Supreme
Court-mandated Monitoring
Committee filed a report in
the court on May 7, stating
there are unauthourised con-
structions in the market.
The traders’ association
has since been trying to meet
the chairman of the New Del-
hi Municipal Council (NDMC)
— the civic body catering to
Lutyens’ Delhi — who is also
a member of the STF.
“We had sought time with
the chairman but he was not
available. We are expecting an
audience with him on Satur-
day to discuss what the rules
say, as there is no encroach-
ment on the passages before
our shops or structures ob-
structing passages. We need to
understand the court order,”
said Rajan Bhatia, a member
of the traders’ association.
Govt warns of another fake
education board in Capital

warned parents and students
against another fake educa-
tion board running in the
national capital, saying there
are only three relevant
boards operating in the city.
Last week, the Directorate
of Education (DoE) had made
a list of 12 fake boards operat-
ing in Delhi public.
“No board with the name
of ‘Board of Adult Education
and Training’ is recognised
by the directorate,” a DoE or-
der stated.

Ghaziabad: A 27-year-old
man allegedly strangled his
45-year-old live-in partner in
their house in the Khora area
of Ghaziabad late on Thurs-
day night. Police said that the
man later surrendered at the
local police station.
According to police, the ac-
cused has been identified as
Pankaj Joshi, a native of
Nainital district of Uttara-
khand, who runs a restau-
rant in Nehru Garden area of
Khora and lived in a rented
apartment. The victim has
been identified as Renu, a na-
tive of Mumbai, police said.
Police said that the couple
met each other through the
social media website Face-
book and fell in love.
“The two met a year ago
through Facebook and be-
came good friends. They later
started liking each other.
Around a month ago, Renu
had come to Ghaziabad to
meet Joshi and started living
with him,” said Akash

The Supreme Court on Fri-
day slammed the Upper Ya-
muna River Board (UYRB)
for not doing their job per-
taining to distribution of
river water among the benefi-
ciary states, asking it why
should the courts do its work.
The apex court, which was
hearing a matter relating to
river Yamuna water sharing
between Delhi and Haryana,
observed that the UYRB was
supposed to do their job of
regulating water supply to
the barrages and asked the
board to give its suggestions
on the issue by May 14.
UYRB was set up by the
Centre in 1995, with one of its
main functions being to regu-
late and supply water from all
storages and barrages till the
Okhla barrage in Delhi, in ac-
cordance with the agree-
ments between the govern-
ments of the six basin states
of Uttar Pradesh, Himachal
Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Hary-
ana, Rajasthan, and Delhi.

Elderly couple charred
to death in Moti Nagar

An elderly couple was charred
to death and another person
injured when a fire broke out
in their house in the early
hours of Friday in a Suder-
shan Park locality of Moti
Nagar in west Delhi. Locals
and family members suspect
that the fire was started by the
couple’s son Santosh who is
mentally unstable. Police said
that the son is absconding and
investigations are on to deter-
mine his involvement.
According to the police, the
incident took place around 3
am. The deceased couple has
been identified as Chedi Lal,
70, and his wife Laxmi, 62. Vi-
nay, who was staying with the
couple as a tenant, sustained
injuries while trying to save
the couple.
Vijay Kumar, Deputy Com-
missioner of Police (West),
said, “The fire broke out on
the ground floor. One fire ten-
der was sent to the spot but
the couple had already suc-
cumbed to their burn inju-
ries by the time it arrived. We
have registered a case and
are investigating the matter.”
Locals claimed that it was
Santosh, the couple’s son,

The Delhi High Court on Fri-
day dismissed pleas challeng-
ing the CBSE notification
laying down the upper age
limit of 25 and 30 years for
general and reserved catego-
ries respectively to apply for
National Eligibility-cum-En-
trance Test (NEET)-UG, a
pre-qualification for pursu-
ing MBBS course.
The high court, however,
struck down a clause in the no-
tification which bars students
from open schools or those who
have studied privately from ap-
pearing in the test.
A bench of justices Sanjiv
Khanna and Chander Shek-
har said that the proviso to
the clause of the CBSE’s Jan-
uary 22 notification prescrib-
ing upper age limit of 25
years in case of general cat-
egory candidates and 30
years in case of reserved cat-
egory candidates is “legal
and valid”.
“To this extent, the writ
petitions challenging vires of
proviso to clause 4 of the
Regulations are dismissed,”
the bench said.
The court also said that the
proviso to a clause of the reg-
ulations disqualifying recog-
nised open school board can-
didates is “struck down and
declared unconstitutional.
“Students/candidates,
who have done class 12 from
NIOS (National Institute of
Open Schooling) or recog-
nised open school state
boards, would not be treated
as per se disqualified for se-

taka will vote to elect a new
Assembly in a three-cornered
contest on Saturday.
While the ruling Congress
and the BJP are the main con-
tenders for power, former
prime minister HD Deve Gow-
da’s JD(S) is expected to be the
dark horse to look out for. Ac-
cording to most surveys and
opinion polls (see graphics),
Gowda’s party is likely to play
the kingmaker post elections.
However, all three parties
are fingers crossed as no par-
ty in Karnataka has won a
second successive term in of-
fice since 1985 when the Ja-

Adityanath visited Sitapur
district on Friday and met
family members of the chil-
dren who had come under
attacks from feral dogs.
The Allahabad High Court
had also asked the state gov-

Bofors case:
Court set to
hear CBI plea
on July 30
New Delhi: A Delhi court on
Friday decided to hear on
July 30 the CBI’s plea seeking
a direction to allow it to go for
further probe into the politi-
cally sensitive Rs 64-crore
Bofors pay-off case.
The matter came up before
Chief Metropolitan Magis-
trate Ashu Garg, who fixed it
for hearing after the summer
vacation, noting the submis-
sion of BJP leader and advo-
cate Ajay Agrawal that he
would file an application in
the apex court for transfer of
the original case records to
Tis Hazari court.
The court was told that the
original records file pertain-
ing to the case was with the
Supreme Court.
The court had earlier de-
ferred the matter due to non-
availability of documents
which had been provided to
the apex court, which was
seized of Agrawal’s plea chal-
lenging the May 31, 2005 ver-
dict of the Delhi High Court
quashing all charges against
the accused.
Agrawal, who had contest-
ed the 2014 Lok Sabha elec-
tion from Rae Bareli against

Gandhi, had filed the appeal

The other speaker was the eminent
former editor and current MP (Rajya
Sabha) of Janata Dal (U), Harivansh
Narayan Singh. An erudite and eloquent
speaker, he movingly and knowledgeably
sary was concluded recently. Congratu-
lating him on his speech, I suggested that
he had enough material for a small book.
In the context of programme and given
its audience, Mahatma Gandhi’s first
satyagraha in India actually represents
the triumph of the rule of law. Gandhi
ensured that legal means were used in
the protest to change the notoriously vi-
cious and inequitable indigo laws.
The Judicial Academy is the brain-
child of senior judges of the Jharkhand
High Court such as Justice Anant Bijay
Singh. The latter, in many senses, re-
mains the moving spirit and the intel-
lectual force behind the Academy. Jus-
tice Singh took me around the premises
himself. The Academy is not only de-
signed and constructed to the highest
architectural and aesthetic standards,
but also shows commitment to perfec-
tion. There is a fountain in front of the
main building, music plays from hidden
speakers, and the carefully planted
flowering trees, including an assort-
ment of frangipani (champak) exude a
divine fragrance at dawn and dusk. But
what impressed me about Justice Singh
was the first question he asked me,
“What are your reading these days?”
The highly erudite Justice Singh later
escorted me to the residence of the Act-
ing Chief Justice of Jharkhand High
Court, Hon. Justice HN Patel. We were
received with typical Gujarati hospitali-
ty as well as delicious snacks, such as
raw banana pakoras. Justice Patel has
brought many improvements and inno-
vations to the state, including a swanky
and all-solar new High Court building,
which is coming up before our eyes. A
huge complex of Stupa-like structures, it
will be one of the most impressive and
eco-friendly court premises in India.
Justice Patel was gracious enough to
share some of his other reforms. All the
printing work of the Court is done by
prisoners in a state-of-the art press run
from jail premises. This not only saves
prisoners themselves. What is more, a
portion of their wages goes to the victims
of their crimes. Half the workers are
women. In fact, at least 50 per cent of the
para-legal staff in the state are also wom-
en, thanks to Justice Patel’s insistence.
All the judges I met, including the
learned and unassuming Justice
Aparesh Kumar Singh, work 12-14
hours a day. They give their best to their
job even at the expense of the demands
of family and leisure. Justice Patel ex-
plained, “We work as a team. Even if
there is a difference of opinion, we ar-
rive at a consensus. That is the secret of
our success.” A far cry from the public
wrangling and dissensions in our Su-
preme Court.
The present Director of the Academy,
Justice Gautam Kumar Choudhury, also
doubles up as the Acting Vice-Chancel-
lor of NUSRL, where I had a follow-up
lecture on “Life, Law and Literature.” I
found him courteous and efficient, also
well-read and well-informed. An excel-
actions was the 4-km early morning
walk-cum-jog on the Hatia Dam, just out-
side the Academy. He is not only in great
physical shape, but also an advanced
meditator. Having bel sharbat in his
home post-workout and stretch was an
especially memorable experience.
After this non-litigious but highly re-
warding peep into one of the three pil-
lars of our democracy, I felt both hum-
bled and elevated. Our Judiciary is do-
ing well, despite all its woes. The wash-
ing of its dirty linen in public may have
somewhat eroded its credibility, but the
judges who form its backbone are often
extraordinary and inspiring individu-
als. Overworked and understaffed
though they may be, their dedication
and commitment to the country and to
the cause of justice are not only com-
mendable but exemplary. That is why
we must be proud of them.

lupus patients

may worsen symptoms for
patients with lupus, accord-
ing to a study.
In a recent Arthritis Care
& Research study of 148 wom-
en with lupus, obesity was
linked with worse disease
activity, depressive symp-
toms, and symptoms of pain
and fatigue. The association
was consistent across differ-
ent definitions of obesity.
The study’s findings high-
light the need for lifestyle
interventions in lupus pa-
tients who are overweight to
help reduce health risks and
the debilitating symptoms
of the disease.
“In addition to reducing
the risk of comorbid condi-
tions such as cardiovascular
disease, lifestyle interven-
tions to improve body compo-
sition may reduce the sever-
ity of symptoms experienced
by persons with lupus,” said

more likely to have a stroke
before age 50 than their
peers who avoid tobacco, a
small study suggests.
Smoking has long been
linked to an increased risk
of stroke in older adults, but
research to date examining
this connection in younger
adults has mainly focused on
women. For the current
study, researchers examined
data on 615 men who had a
stroke before age 50 and com-
pared their smoking habits
to a control group of 530
similar men who didn’t have
a history of stroke.
Overall, current smokers
were 88 percent more likely
to have a stroke than men
who never smoked, the
study found.
Light smokers who had
fewer than 11 cigarettes a
day were 46 percent more
likely to have a stroke. Heavy
smokers with a two pack-a-
day habit, or more, were
over five times more likely
to have a stroke.

Mumbai: For last few days a

captain Virat Kohli, who has
signed up with Surrey, is
right in giving the one-off
Test match against Afghani-
stan a miss for County crick-

While the verdict is split,
former India captain Dilip
Vengsarkar is of the view
that Kohli is right in opting
for the latter.
“I think its a good decision
(on Virat playing County) be-
cause he will get time to ac-
climatise to the conditions.
And I’m sure because his last
tour (to England) was not
very good, he is very keen to
do well,” Vengsarkar said on
the sidelines of launch of a
school cricket tournament.
Vengsarkar said it defies
logic in calling back Chetesh-
war Pujara, who is current
plying his trade in County
cricket for Yorkshire, for just
one-off Test against Afghani-
stan in Bengaluru.
“If I was a selector I would
have asked even Pujara to
stay back and play County
cricket, because these are the
guys who will play in Eng-
land. Playing in India against
Afghanistan for them makes
no sense.
“Pujara will come and
play against Afghanistan,
that’s OK, but that defies
logic to me because playing
in England County cricket is
important right now. I think
he is not very consistent at
the moment. So he will get
more chances to play in Eng-
land and score runs and get
into the groove,” he added.
Vengsarkar, who is the
only batsman to have scored
three successive tons at the

London, said that the Test
against Afghanistan is

New Delhi: State-owned Ca-
nara Bank reported on Fri-
day a net loss of Rs 4,859.77
crore for the last quarter of
2017-18 due to increased pro-
visioning for bad loans.
The bank had clocked a
net profit of Rs 214.18 crore
in the corresponding Janu-
ary-March quarter of pre-
ceding fiscal 2016-17.
The bank raised its provi-
sioning for non-performing
assets (NPAs) to Rs 8,762.57
crore during the January-
March quarter, up by nearly
200 per cent per cent from Rs
2,924.08 crore in the same pe-
riod of previous fiscal, as
bad assets ballooned, accord-
ing to a regulatory filing by
the bank.
For whole 2017-18, the
bank suffered a net loss of Rs
4,222.24 crore compared with
a net profit of Rs 1,121.92
crore in the previous fiscal.
Total income of the bank
during the quarter ended
March 2018 fell to Rs 11,555.11
crore from Rs 12,889.20 crore.
In full year 2017-18, total
income stood at Rs 48,194.94
crore against Rs 48,942.04
crore in preceding year, the
bank said.
Asset-wise, there was fall
in quality as gross non-per-
forming assets (NPAs) rose
to 11.84 per cent of gross ad-
vances by the end of March
2018 from 9.63 per cent by
end-March 2017.
In absolute value, the
gross NPAs were at Rs
47,468.47 crore from Rs
34,202.04 crore.
