INTRO

"An individual cannot be more at home in any other language than his own. In every sovereign
country, the used of its own language in education is so natural, no one thinks it could be
otherwise."

To my fellow researchers and to our research mentor, Mr. Anthony Yoma, a pleasant afternoon.
I am here to present my research on "the use of filipino language as medium of instruction in
teaching in schools" with the title of my research as "Foreign Filipino: A Study on the Waning
Utilization of Filipino Language in Teaching in UST JHS".

RATIONALE
The reason for this research is that the Philippines is one of the countries in Asia that uses
English language in teaching subjects such as Math and Science while the majority of the
countries in Asia use their own native language in teaching the said subjects.
According to statistics, students of these countries are said to rank high in math and science
tests in the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study among other countries in
Asia while the Philippines is one of the tail-enders. On the contrary, the Philippines became and
is known as one of the best English proficient country in Asia with the help of the current
education system that we have. Also because of our education system, it seem to have
negatively affected the use of our own language.

THESIS STATEMENT
With these conditions presented, this study's goal is to determine as to how the dominant usage
of English language in teaching Math and Science subjects in UST JHS causes negative
impacts in the understanding of the students about the concepts and lessons of the subject and
in the fluency of our own native language.
With that, The Filipino language should be used in teaching subjects such as Mathematics and
Science in UST JHS for the possible betterment of academic performance of students in the
said subjects, for national development and also for the dissemenation and enrichment of the
Filipino language.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS:
This study will answer the following questions:

1. What language is preferred by UST JHS students in learning the concepts and lessons in
Math and Science subjects?
2. What are the percieved negative effects of learning these subjects in English?
3. How will the students benefit from the use of Filipino language as medium of instructions in
teaching these subjects?
4. How do the students give importance to the use of their own language?
5. How teaching using Filipino be a way for us to appreciate and embrace more the use of the
Filipino language?
METHODOLOGY
The researcher used three different ways of data collection for this study namely, Library
Research, Interview, and Survey. The researcher compiled facts from different printed sources
found both in UST JHS and UST Central Library, and online sources from reliable news and
academic websites.
The researcher then interview someone knowledgeable about the topic to gain opinions and
perspective of an expert on the topic.
And for the survey part, the researcher formulated a survey questionnaire consists of 15
questions and distributed 50 copies of the questionnaires to the students across the different
grade levels of UST JHS.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

1. In this graph, when students are asked about what language are they most comfortable in
using, the majority answered a combination of both English and Filipino. This also show that no
student is most comfortable in using solely the English language in general. On the other graph,
most of the respondents answered that the language that allows them to express themselves
best is the Filipino language.

Basically these graphs show that the language that the students are most comfortable in using
in general is the same language that allows them best to express their ideas and thoughts
during class discussions.

2. On the next graphs, When the students are asked about the language that enables them to
understand the lessons and concepts in the Mathematics and Science subject, the majority
agreed to the answer of combination of both English and Filipino language but with more use of
the English language since English got the second most response by the students.

3. The two graphs show that the majority of the respondents are more fluent in using the Filipino
language than the English language. At the same time, no respondents think that their fluency in
the English language is very bad nor very good.

4. Looking at the two graphs here, it shows that more students are comfortable in using the
Filipino language during class discussions compared to the use of the English language.

5. The next two graphs here show that more students think that learning the lessons in Math
and Science subjects using the English language would be more beneficial for them.

6. From the four graphs here you can see that the students really value the Filipino language by
agreeing that they still need to learn more about our own language, by saying that they cannot
practically live without using the Filipino Language and by saying that being fluent in their own
native language is important.
7. On the last graph here, students are asked if they have any idea on why is the English
language being used in teaching in schools, fortunately no one answered I don't know. And the
reason that received the most answers was to be able to communicate better and followed by
the reason of gaining more knowledge with just a very small gap.

CONCLUSION
From these results, the researcher came up with the following conclusions:

The students of UST Junior High School:

1. are more fluent in using the filipino language than the English language. And also Filipino is
the language that allows them best to express their thoughts and ideas, especially during class
discussions.

2. prefer the use of a combination of both English and Filipino, but with more use of English than
Filipino, on learning the lessons and concepts in subjects Science and Mathematics

3. value the use of their own native language and thinks being fluent in their mother tongue is
important so they agreed that they should learn more about the Filipino language.

4. have an idea why the English language is being used in teaching in school. They mostly think
it is for them to be able to gain more knowledge and to be able to communicate better with other
people.

With this, the researcher came up with the following recommendations:

THE RESEARCHER RECOMMENDS:
The educators of UST JHS in the field of Mathematics and Science to:

1. allow and not restrict the students in using the filipino language especially when they are
asked to express their ideas and thoughts about a particular topic or lesson concerning the
subject.

2. teach the lessons and concepts of the subject using the combination of both english and
filipino, but with more use of english than filipino.

to The educators of UST JHS in the field of Filipino to:

3. continue further enriching its students about the filipino language to improve their fluency in
using filipino.

And last to the future researchers about this topic to:

4. conduct the study with a much bigger scale and more students involved since the researcher,
in his study, were only able to involve a minimal number of student consists of mostly Grade
Ten students and some students of the remaining grade levels.
The researcher suggests this so that future studies will have a more accurate representation of
the perception of UST JHS students as a whole about the topic.
