Dear Friend,
Greetings in the precious name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Being
the beginning of May, I can't help but think of the many farmers and
gardeners around that are gearing up for growing fruits and vegetables this
summer. The Lord is preparing our hearts as well for His harvest. Our hearts
are likened to a garden in the Bible. Hosea 10:12 says, "Sow to yourselves
in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is
time to seek the Lord, till He come and rain righteousness upon you."
The term "fallow ground" simply means an area of a farm that has been left
unplanted for a period of time. In that state of "resting," the ground has a
chance to rejuvenate. It could be one year, or up to five years unplanted or
unfruitful. There may be an area in your heart that you have left that is
unfruitful or dormant. Maybe there are things in that portion of your life
that the Lord is talking to you about that is time to come alive again. Maybe
there is a place deep inside that you think could never again produce good.
But there is a time and a season for everything, and this could be your
season of growth! This could be the year that the Lord will cause you to
break out on the left hand and on the right. Getting your heart ready for God
to move is just as important as when God actually does move in and
through you.
There are some things you can do to prepare your life for a move of
God's Spirit. In this life there will always be weeds and thorns, so we need
to pull out the weeds: doubts, fears, wrong attitudes and outlooks, etc.
These weeds will take nourishment from the fruit that should grow. The
farmer also pulls out all the thorns he comes across. Those thorns are things
that choke the Word of God in your life. The Lord referred to thorns as
"care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches..." Other places in the
Bible tell us that things people say to us can be thorns that prick our hearts
and minds and cause us to become unfruitful. Unforgiveness in our hearts,
no matter how justified we believe we are, can be a thorn. Acts of sin can be
thorns. Never let a root of bitterness grow in your heart. It will defile many
others around you. So all of those things have to go, period.
Then the Lord spoke to the men of Judah and Jerusalem through
Jeremiah the prophet, "Break up your fallow ground, and sow not among
thorns" (Jeremiah 4:3). While the ground rests for a period of time it also
can get hard. Clods are hard areas that need to be broken up by plowing so
the farmer can sow seeds there. Sometimes we can get hard through
circumstances over time. We must be willing to let the Word of God break
those areas up. Also, the Lord sends the rain of His Spirit, which also helps
"soften" the ground so the seed can grow. It is no mistake to being fruitful,
because it takes you being willing and obedient to God's directions. The
Bible clearly tells us what is right and what is wrong. If we follow what the
Lord says is right, we shall be fruitful, and we shall reap a crop of love, joy,
and peace. If we disobey His Word, no matter who we are, we can expect
hardness and thorns and hurts and pricks to abide us.
My prayer for all of us is, "Father, help us to follow your Word very
closely, to sow right things, so we may reap mercy; to help others who are
in need, for in doing so we are doing it unto You. Help us to be kind, wise,
and gentle towards others, and help us to always look for the appearing of
our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. In Jesus' name. Amen."
If you do not attend a church I invite you to ours. Our schedule of
