Campus Café in Paris, France

Intro to Design I: First Principles

Sanjiv H-K

Program: 4000 sf of indoor seating

4000 sf of outdoor seating
600 sf for the mechanical room
600 sf for the toilets and maintenance closet
600 sf for the kitchen and cashiers
200 sf enclosure for trash and recycling

Initial Massing:

After the initial idea for the café, the location given to my project was Paris, France. The
café had to be tailored to the climate of the area.

Wind Rose:

Paris has an oceanic climate, with mild summers and cool winters. The wind typically
comes the most from the north, though slightly off in either direction.

The initial massing was modified to be more energy efficient based on Insight
suggestions:

The structural system is broken into 2 components: lateral and gravity. The lateral
system accounted for lateral forces, and in Paris those forces mostly come from the
wind. The gravity system accounted for the Earth’s gravitational force on the building
members, and thus the beams and columns were sized to account for them.

Lateral System, Initial Idea:

The program was then amended to have the café made out of equal proportions of
concrete, wood, and steel (as further demonstration on how each material handles
loads and stresses).

The café required climate control from mechanical systems. Supply and return diffusers
were placed strategically to minimize heat transfer in the walls and maximize human
comfort.

Mechanical System, Initial Idea:

Window design was covered for both natural lighting and for human comfort.

The café was then modified to improve the program and maximize view corridors with
extensive curtain wall. This involved joining the isolated toilet closet with the building
and expanding the width of the indoor seating area.

Finally, the building was constructed in Revit in 3 parts: structural, architectural, and
mechanical systems. For brevity, only one view for each system is shown.
