INTRODUCTION

In the social sciences and life sciences, a case study is a research method involving an up-close,
in-depth, and detailed examination of a subject of study (the case), as well as its related
contextual conditions.

Case studies can be produced by following a formal research method. These case studies are
likely to appear in formal research venues, as journals and professional conferences, rather than
popular works. The resulting body of 'case study research' has long had a prominent place in
many disciplines and professions, ranging from psychology, anthropology, sociology, and
political science to education, clinical science, social work, and administrative science.

In doing case study research, the "case" being studied may be an individual, organization, event,
or action, existing in a specific time and place. For instance, clinical science has produced both
well-known case studies of individuals and also case studies of clinical practices. However,
when "case" is used in an abstract sense, as in a claim, a proposition, or an argument, such a case
can be the subject of many research methods, not just case study research. Case studies may
involve both qualitative and quantitative research methods.

Another suggestion is that case study should be defined as a research strategy, an empirical
inquiry that investigates a phenomenon within its real-life context. Case study research can mean
single and multiple case studies, can include quantitative evidence, relies on multiple sources of
evidence, and benefits from the prior development of theoretical propositions. Case studies
should not be confused with qualitative research and they can be based on any mix of
quantitative and qualitative evidence. Single-subject research provides the statistical framework
for making inferences from quantitative case-study data. This is also supported and well-
formulated in Lamnek,: "The case study is a research approach, situated between concrete data
taking techniques and methodologic paradigm

CASE -1

Recently, you were promoted to the position of manager of your department. One
member of your group now reports to you. Ashish is upset that you were given the promotion
over him. Although he is known as the company expert on technical matters in his field, lately
his work has been slipping. On more than one occasion he has left work early, arrived late and
missed several deadlines on monthly reports. You are connected because you consider him a
valuable employee of your staff and an asset to the company. Since you are new to your position,
you know that you must depend on his expertise to keep group on track, as you require more
time to learn more about your new responsibilities. Ashish has been known to be difficult to deal
with and has developed a reputation as a scientific ‘Prim Donna’. In a meeting the other day,
several of your peers (and your boss) were joking about Ashish’s occasional superior attitude
towards others. His attitude and behavior on the job are not consistent with the norms your
company associates with its management staff. Ashish seems to believe that he’s put in lot of his
time, effort and energy in the company and that the company owes it to him to grant him a
promotion. You believe he has the talent, skills and knowledge to make excellent contributions if
his attitude improves.

Answer the following questions to find a solution to the existing problem

1. If this situation were left unchecked, what category might this subordinate represent?

Talented but Abrasive

Charming but unreliable

2. How would you manage the situation?

Talented but Abrasive. Because Ashish is upset that you were given the promotion over him.

I would manage the situation by various approaches. Since the person is promoted to the position

of manager of your department. One member of your group now reports to you. Ashish is upset

that you were given the promotion over him. Although he is known as the company expert on

technical matters in his field, lately his work has been slipping. On more than one occasion he

‘Prim Donna'. In a meeting the other day, several of your peers (and your boss) were joking

about Ashish's occasional superior attitude towards others. His attitude and behavior on the job

are not consistent with the norms your company associates with its management staff.

3. What strategies would you use to coach and guide this subordinate's development?

Counseling the employee to solve his problem. Counselling and Psychotherapy can be of great

support in times of crisis or change. It involves the provision of professional assistance to people

who are experiencing personal issues, in order to help alleviate those difficulties.

Nearly everyone faces challenges and difficulties in their life at some time. But sometimes they

can be overwhelming and we feel like we are helpless. Stress over a job, anxiety caused by

5
uncertainty over the future, loss because of bereavement, problems over addiction or difficulties

in a relationship are just some of the reasons why people feel they can benefit by talking to a

professional Counsellor or Psychotherapist. Perhaps the biggest advantage of group therapy is

the opportunity to see that others are struggling in similar ways. Individual counseling doesn't

offer this kind of personal insight into the experiences of others. Your feelings of isolation will

likely become lessened as you begin to hear the stories of others and realize they struggle, as

well. Whether you're dealing with anger management issues, anxiety, depression or other life

struggle, group counseling offers a space of validation and understanding.

6
CONCLUSION

Counseling is particularly common at transition points in a person's life, where they are moving,

from the familiar to the strange, going from child to adult, single to married and so on. These

changes can be difficult and the counselor can help their client successfully make the change

both emotionally and cognitively. . You are connected because you consider him a valuable

employee of your staff and an asset to the company. Since you are new to your position, you

know that you must depend on his expertise to keep group on track, as you require more time to

learn more about your new responsibilities. Ashish has been known to be difficult to deal with

and has developed a reputation as a scientific Prim Donna'. In a meeting the other day, several

others. His attitude and behavior on the job are not consistent with the norms your company

associates with its management staff.
