Final Draft

In the world of social media, Facebook, SnapChat, and YouTube have over the years

changed through problems on users not knowing the policies of the issues of Hate Speech, For

example, Hate Speech can deal with different outcomes of how each social media platform

association deals with the problems people face on social media on what is right vs wrong to say.

Likewise, with Canadian Blogger Meghan Murphy was in the spotlight last year in November

2018 she was reported on Twitter by saying negative tweets towards the Transgender

community. As well, most of the LGBTQ community were not happy that she said “Men aren’t

Women” and “Transwomen are men” because of those tweets Meghan Murphy was taken down

of her account at that time. However, Meghan Murphy uploaded on her YouTube channel the

situation that she will be having a case against Twitter by suing them over why or how come

other people can upload more negative and inappropriate images or tweets. In a similar manner,

she should understand that Twitter is a private company and has so many users that, but more

than 100 million people use Twitter on a daily basis. Finally, in the case of Meghan Murphy

should win her case against on the aspect what does Hate Speech mean towards Twitter’s

policies of what happens to an account and the tweet.

First of all, free speech covers Twitter because most people that Twitter is a privately

owned company that can make up different rules without the consent of the government and their
Olaguez 2

employee's opinion. For example, the first amendment always covers any public debate because

sometimes people probably will talk about the differences on how you can feel about something

like how freedom of speech meaning you can say whatever you want without censorship and

restraint. Likewise, the reason is that Twitter as an example shows they are public reflecting that

all speech is allowed therefore, Meghan Murphy should not be banned on Twitter. Another

example, if Twitter too just reflects what can be freedom of speech vs hate speech why are there

so many hateful or inappropriate things on their platform sometimes without a warning or a

notice. However, Twitter is where sometimes most of the drama leads to the different points of

views deciding which post or content can be allowed on the platform. Lastly, there has to be the

reason why somethings can or cannot allow to express the freedom of speech vs hate speech on

knowing what is allowed to have controversy.

As a matter fact, a Canadian Blogger named Meghan Murphy was one of the types of

person who uploads a tweeted something back on November 2018 about the LGBTQ

community, but more towards the Transgender community. Meghan Murphy was in the middle

of Hate Speech by stated, “Men aren’t Women and Transwomen aren’t Men” (Wells/Hanson 1).

Basically, Wells and Hanson are saying that Meghan Murphy should have expressed her way

like that towards the LGBTQ community because Murphy in the past had some experiences

dealing with that issue. For example, Meghan also does not understand why in the world Twitter

only targeted her at the moment by thinking that she is not allowed to have the Freedom of

Speech. Likewise, that there other people who use social media just for expressing anything on

Twitter or other platforms behind that what kind of rules, policies, and etc are allowed to upload

on deciding what is the right vs wrong thing. Another example, Murphy wants to prove to
Olaguez 3

Twitter that there are other people who post more negative posts and feedback by inappropriate

videos or images or language. However, Jonathan Yaniv was the reason that Meghan Murphy

was locked and censored by calling Twitter to have Murphy lose her job because she still wants

to battle against Yaniv on knowing why I could not explain why she said those quotes. Lastly,

hopefully, Meghan Murphy will get an answered of talking about what is Freedom of Speech and

Hate Speech on Twitter by knowing what is the right thing and bad thing to know for the long

run.

There are different types of hate speech that deals with negative feedback or something

that will have an impact on the situation that impacts people about their sex, religion, race, and

ethnicity. For example, within Meghan Murphy vs Twitter.inc, the LGBTQ community was

bothered that someone that was making fun of the Transgender community, but Meghan was just

saying her opinion because some people thought she was just saying her opinion or really being

mean. However, the examples that Jeremy Waldon’s book The Harm in Hate Speech is mostly

coming from his very own opinion, but the example that is dealing with hate speech is this one.

Jeremy Waldron wrote, “Muslim man out walking with his two children “on a city street in New

Jersey,” confronting a sign saying: “Muslims and 9/11! Don’t serve them, don’t speak to them

and don’t let them in.” (Waldron 5). Basically, Waldron is saying, that if someone or something

can happen in the world like people/society always have their doubts of being racist or

discriminating different type of people on actions that are just plain stereotyping people. In a

similar way, whether something that comes from online or in-person will depends on how people

would take it literally or not by depending that if somethings are hate speech or just freedom of
Olaguez 4

speech. Lastly, what should both issues talk about the issues of how people should have the

chance of having the right to say whatever they want without a consequence.

However, if the issue having Hate Speech vs Freedom of Speech on social media that

deal with the problem that most of the issue being cyberbullying. For example, cyberbullying

deals with all the issues that society or something that will judge something in the long-run.

Likewise, how hate speech can impact worldwide problems that deal with the aspects going from

how the world can not be changed because of every year in different parts in the world there is

hate speech. Professors Naganna Chetty and Sreejith Alathur from the article “Hate Speech in

the Context of Social Networks” talks about more than the problems of cyberbullying, but even

the topics of being that social media in real life so there can be no more personal or hurtful to

someone getting made fun of someone who is different than yourself on their voice, clothing,

and appearance. Lastly, people should not judge people with negative language by keeping

things to yourself without expressing them out loud or on social media that the whole world can

see.

Nowadays, everyone who has internet access uses social media for different types of

communication instead of some the old fashion way by one-on-one, phone, email, and has

changed the ways to have conversations within different generations. In a similar matter, every

social media platform has different aspects doing the best to provide goods and services for

people that use social media going through all the aspects of being the best. As the prominent

philosophers Victoria L. LaPoe, Candi Carter Olson, and Stine Eckert put it, “they did a study

with 45 different types of people who are media scholars who see how those scholars use social

media for an advantage or disadvantage”(LaPoe, Olson, and Eckert 1). Basically, LaPoe, Olson,
Olaguez 5

and Eckert are saying that there was a study between the scholarly authors and forty-five people

getting interviews to see how they use social media in the world for communication on social

media for work, education, or personal purpose. As well, people can use whatever social media

platform from Linkedin to YouTube to see how people want to express a problem or themselves.

So, that is how Meghan Murphy used Twitter as her platform where she can express her opinion

because Twitter took away her job to support all the people who supported her and see Meghan

growing or declining after November 2018. Lastly, really depends that how people want to use

social media for communication or just use to have somewhere to meet people and a way to see

the news or drama.

There can be positive and negative in the world how people go about talking about Hate

Speech vs Freedom of Speech, but just depending on how they want to express their feelings

about different types of topics According to Mainack Mondala, Leandro Araujo Silva, Denzil

Correa, and Fabr´ıcio Benevenuto states“For better understanding of the hate targets we

manually categorize them in hate categories and For example, the term “black” should be

categorized as race and “gay” like sexual orientation” (Mondala, Silvab, Correac, and

Benevenuto 8/9). In other words, Mondala, Silvab, Correac, and Benevenuto believes that the

hate terms are spread out that they should be described as something there is nothing related to it

because if you want to judge someone because they are different that is emotional and not right

to do. In the battle of Meghan Murphy vs Twitter dealing why was she the only one who was

targeted as hate speech rather than someone who believes in something that is worse than saying

your own opinion. However, Mondala and the fellow authors complain that Hate Speech is a big

impact on how people by not realizing that on the internet is going more than nationwide, but
Olaguez 6

more worldwide. Finally, Hate Speech should be a big deal and social media platforms should

look through what is allowed and not allowed by seeing what users upload.

However, the opposite of being hate speech going through other people mind is thinking

that Hate Speech should not be censored on dealing that Hate Speech should be something that is

dealing with Freedom of Speech. Likewise, that person is Nadine Strossen the author of “Hate:

Why We Should Resist It With Free Speech, Not Censorship” because Strossen believes that

Hate Speech should not be censored by talking about Hate Speech rather being associated with

the Free Speech. According to Strossen said, “Current politicians have attacked Black Lives

Matter protests as “Hate Speech” meaning that there are some politicians in the United States

government does not support or just thinking that the Black Lives Matter movement is more hate

speech than any other problem that goes on in the United States” (Strossen 8). In a similar way,

that different types of groups of like the LGBTQ community, Black Lives Matter, MeToo

Movement, and etc have cause some debate that sometimes they can deal with Hate Speech by

causing problems all over the United States having the dilemma of each situation. However, with

Meghan Murphy and I think differently that Hate Speech does not think that it is right that both

Hate Speech and Freedom of Speech are two different issues on how people take things to

consider. Finally, Hate Speech is not the same thing as Freedom of Speech by meaning two

different things and really depends on how people want to express their concerns or news.

In conclusion, that Hate Speech being something that is dealt all over the world with

countries doing different types rules and laws on how people can express their opinion and

having the right to have the right of Freedom of Speech. As a matter fact, with the issue of
Olaguez 7

Meghan Murphy that should win her case due to being that she brings examples that knowing

why do not other types of more hateful groups. In a similar way, censorship is a difficult thing to

do talk about all the problems that happen in the world, social media, and etc by being racism,

discrimination, and cyberbullying dealing with people vs society. Finally, Meghan Murphy has

the right facts by taking the aim to Twitter by providing all the points of how come other people

on Twitter who upload more negative content do not get in trouble and the type of users who

snitch on just saying their very own opinion.
