Industrial Technology Major in Refrigeration and Air Condition Technology and
Electronics Technology Prepared under the supervision of Mr. Nestor Alvarez.

INTRODUCTION

Climate change also known as global warming pertains to the rise in average

surface temperature on earth. Nowadays climate change is one of the biggest problem of

the human being. It is already happening and represents one of the greatest environmental

social and economic threats facing the planet. Climate change can affect every person and

our health directly through the increase in temperature. One way to lessen the increase of

temperature is the use of air conditioner.

Air conditioner is one of the main reasons why most residential commercial and

industrial areas that have warm temperature become cool. The main job of air conditioner

is to move the heat from inside to outside, thereby cooling you and our surroundings. Air

conditioners are intended for cooling and partial dehydration.

Nowadays air conditioner is one of the best creation that has ever build. Many

residential, commercial and industrial areas are using different type of air conditioning

units. The demand of work for HVAC R (Heating Ventilating Air Conditioning and
2

Refrigeration) in different countries have increase, In that case many people now is having

an idea to take up a course about air conditioning.

This project study was conducted to produce a new technological device that will

help students to learn the principle of air conditioning and the chilled water system in the

modern day. A domestic type air conditioning unit that used water as secondary refrigerant.

Objective of the Study

The main purpose of this project study was to develop a domestic type chilled water

air conditioning unit.

Specifically, it aimed to do the following:

1. design a chilled water system domestic type air conditioning unit;

2. construct chilled water system domestic type air conditioning unit;

3. evaluate the performance of prototype in terms of its technical performance in the

following:

a. cooling efficiency

b. water temperature

c. air velocity

d. amperage of the system

e. compare the cooling efficiency and amperage of a domestic type air

conditioning unit with same horsepower to the develop project

4. conduct cost analysis of the project;

3

Significance of the Study

The project study aims to develop a domestic type air conditioning chilled water

system. A domestic type air conditioning unit that will use the water as a secondary

refrigerant.

This project will be very useful to the students who are taking course about air

conditioning, they could improve their learnings and to have a deeper knowledge about air

conditioning specifically the principles of air conditioning, the mechanical and electrical

parts of air conditioner and especially the chilled water system at Cavite State University

Rosario Campus. Even the instructors of RAC Technology will be a beneficiary of this

project study because they can use it for demonstration during hands-on activities. The

domestic type air condition unit chilled water system will be used as educational and

instructional purposes. The study is also deemed as an important reference for future

researchers who wish to conduct related studies.

4

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The project study was focused on the design and construction of domestic type

chilled water air system conditioning unit.

The domestic type chilled water system air conditioning unit has a minimum and

maximum chilling temperature. The minimum chilling temperature ranged from 14.7 ˚C to

15˚C and the maximum chilling temperature is ranges from 10.9 ˚C to 11˚C. The minimum

amount of water in water storage was 12 liters and the maximum was 16 liters. The cooling

capacity of the project study ranged from 25.4 ˚C to 23.7 ˚C and limited only in a room

with 32 to 33 cubic meters.

Time and Place of the Study

The design project study was conducted at Cavite State University – Rosario,

Rosario Campus at the Refrigeration and Air Condition Technology Building from

February 2016 to May 2017.

Definition of Terms

Air conditioner. The device that removes heat from the air inside a room, thus

lowering the air temperature.

Air conditioning. The process of removing heat from the air inside a room to

achieve a more comfortable interior environment.

Amperage. The strength of electric current in amperes

Chilled water. A recirculating water system using water chilled in refrigeration as

a source of cooling.

Temperature. A measurement that indicates how hot or cold something is.

Velocity. The speed of something.

available. The assumption of the initial cost is based on the bill of materials excluded the

labor cost, labor cost is about 1500 pesos for the fabrication and rent for machines for the

selected parts. The process of evaluation is conducted though the used of one way
