TITLE: DHSV
Purpose: To know the different types of DHSV. Their role, working conditions.
To know the different problems, and how to cure
Two Types of DHSVs
1- TR: Tubing retrievable
The DHSV is sent into the production casing together with the production tubing.
Its I.D. is the same as the tubing I.D. is.
2-Wireline retrievable DHSV
The production tubing is put down without DHSV. The DHSV is installed by wireline down to the
receptacle (Landing nipple).
The advantage of wireline retrievable DHSV is that DHSV can be removed without work-over, only by wireline
intervention. Its drawback is that the internal diameter (I.D.) is smaller than the tubing creating a restriction.
The advantage of the tubing retrievable DHSV is that is I.D. is the same as the tubing diameter.
The drawback is that the removal of the DHSV for replacement needs a complete work over of the well.
The solution is to put an insert by wireline. This insert is a second DHSV with a smaller I.D., which is inserted
inside the existing one.
How DHSV operates See Sketch attached:

DHSV STATUS IN CLOSE POSITION

Piston in upward position maintained by the spring load.
Hydraulic oil pressure down to the value of the control line head pressure: zero barg at wellhead level and
P=spg oil x distance from the top of the DHSV at the DHSV piston level. That means that the spring force
Has to be at least equal to the head pressure of the control line.

OPENING THE DHSV:

The required force to open the DHSV is proportional to the difference of area between the DHSV flapper area
and the piston ring area. On the ring the hydraulic pressure is applied, on the flapper, the well shut-in pressure
is applied. If the downstream side of the DHSV flapper is depressurised the required hydraulic oil pressure is
too high to compensate the force applied on the upstream side of the flapper and the spring force:

Hydraulic oil piston area DHSV flapper area

That why, when opening a DHSV, the downstream pressure of the flapper must be increased by another well
of equivalent Shut-in pressure to compensate the shut-in pressure of the well to be open.
Once this is acheived, the hydraulic oil pressure can be applied.
Once the DHSV flapper starts to open the pressure equilibrium leave the hydraulic oil to compensate the spring
force. The flow tube goes down and put the flapper aside and mask it.
DHSV OPENED
The hydraulic oil remains under pressure as long as the DHSV is required to be open. A minor leakage will be
compensated by the back-up pump start-up. If the seals are passing the hydraulic oil will escape on the gas
side the back-up pump will run; the hydraulic oil tank level will drop. Regular daily checks have to be done to
the hydraulic oil system

CLOSURE OF DHSV

From Haven panel upon a manual local action of operator, or remote action from MOD300, or ESD1 signal, the
hydraulic oil pilot valve will reverse the hydraulic oil to the tank.
At that time the DHSV will close.
On the beginning of the closure the spring tension will push the piston upward. The remaining oil backpressure
being only the control line head pressure.
Once the upstream side of the flapper will be exposed to the well pressure, the flapper will tend to close quicker and
will apply on it seat.

TWO cases:

1- Planned shut-off
The wellhead operator closes the chock valve, then the wing valve, then master valve. At that time the well
pressure is equalized on either sides of the flapper. Closing the DHSV will require the spring to compensate the
hydraulic oil pressure head in the control line.

2-Unplanned shut-off
The DHSV will close quicker than the others as the downstream pressure of the flapper will be at manifold pressure
+ gas head pressure in the well. At that time when the flapper will be exposed to the well pressure it will tend to slam
close. To avoid such a situation the hydraulic oil return is set with a restriction. This will ensure that the master valve
will close first, then the wing valve 20”later, then the DHSV 20”after the wing valve. These closing times are
checked regularly.
In both cases the oil volume returning to the tank would be equal to the volume of the control line.
The check of the hydraulic oil recovery on DHSV test is to ensure that:
-No gas pocket is in the control line showing seal leakage
-The piston is doing all the stroke.
