 WEEK ONE 1

FIRST DAY

ILANG BRIDGE WIDENING

It is my first day and I feel the excitement being a
Civil Engineering student to take this privilege for us
to experience work outside and perform and apply
our gained knowledge in school.

Engr. Rohonesty D. Cabuay the Construction

Department Manager assigned us to meet Engr.
Rolando T. Patani at his project around San Carlos.
Engineer Patani’s project was a bridge widening at
Ilang, San Carlos, Pangasinan. I am surprised since we
were assigned early in a site project. And after getting
there unfortunately the Foreman approach us and
tells that Engr. Patani was having a meeting and
taking his other project around Malasiqui, Pangasinan.
That time the secretary is coming, we were called with
my friends. The secretary introduce herself she is Ms.
Jessa May Benitez, and so we.

We approach the foreman and he show us the plan

of the widening. Since we still lacked knowledge
about the plan and design of a bride the Foreman
tells us the parts and commonly used terms of a
bridge. The abutment, the wingwall, the pile,
foundation, the piers and let us observe the way they
put things.

It is good day since we were introduced out of our

base knowledge.

 WEEK ONE 2

SECOND DAY

3-STOREY SCHOOL BUILDING

This day, we reported to Engr. Rohan and he ask us if
we want to still visit some other projects. And he
assigned us again to visit the 3-storey school building
around Talispatang, Malasiqui, Pangasinan. After
getting there, we are introduced to some of the
workers of that project. They are accommodating
they let us first show the plan of the building and let us
analyze things and ask questions. It is not our first time
to see a plan of a building since we have took
Building Design subject, Reinforced Concrete (RC)
Design subject.

And the coolest thing is they let us observe and ask

while they are working for the slabs. It is fun to observe
because we understand the design of reinforcement
steel they construct. They are lot of things happens
they let us observe on how they bend the stirrups and
on how they tie reinforcements.

 WEEK ONE 3

THIRD DAY

BUGTONG BRIDGE WIDENING

This day, we finally met Engr. Patani the project
engineer of the bridge widening at San Carlos. We met
him at his second bridge-widening project around
Bugtong, Malasiqui, Pangasinan. We introduced
ourselves and after that he begin talking about his
history and ask some questions like, “if it’s our first time
to experience in a bridge project?” and other more.
He tells us that he will not let us go without learning and
gaining some knowledge and he is accommodating
our lunch. He suddenly became professional and
awesome.

Engr. Patani ask lot of things, the design of

reinforcements at pile caps, footings and the types of
bridge they are constructing; Reinforced concrete
girder deck bridge (RCDG), Prestressed concrete
girder deck bridge (PCDG), and Flat slab or RC slab
bridge. The main difference between flat slab &
conventional slab-beam system which is RCDG and
PCDG, is that the one is directly supported on the
column while another system has a beam for support
respectively. And he briefly introduces the estimation
of reinforcements steel. And lastly, he gave us time to
explore the plan since it is our first time, we don’t fully
understand on how to read the plan. Well he
introduced the importance what to know first the
general notes, specifications, legends and schedules.

And we unexpectedly meet the General manager of

Aquino-Dela Cruz Construction Company, Engr.
Condrado P. Aquino.

 WEEK ONE 4

FOURTH DAY

BUGTONG BRIDGE WIDENING

This day, I was arrived early than the secretary and
Engineer. Good thing is I can ask Mr. Foreman what
today’s activities are. He shows me what he is doing
and invited me to show where it is in plan and in
actual.

After some minutes Ms. Secretary has arrived. At the

same time some of my co-trainees (my friends) are
arriving. I tell them what happened before the time
they arrived. We are observing and learning from the
plan little by little. The activities today are reinforcing
the pile foundation and paneling the piers.

 WEEK ONE 5

FIFTH DAY

ILANG BRIDGE WIDENING

This is last day of my first week being a trainee and I say
last but full of learnings and excitements. We are divided
into three members per group and we are assigned in
Ilang, San Carlos, Pangasinan. The project is still Bridge
widening, this was my first day assignment it was April 22,
2019. And again, we meet Ms. Jessa the secretary of the
Ilang Bridge project.

For the meantime we inspect the progress of the

reinforcements of the beam and finally they are
preparing the panels (“porma” in Pangasinan) of the
beams. They look at the plan so that they can now
measure the length and width of panels they’re
constructing. And my attention goes where the spacer are
made, the spacer is the one that will lift the
reinforcements to make a concrete-cover. The workers
that makes the spacer also they are the one who makes
the Piles (“piloti” in Pangsinan). They said that they are
different types of Piles, the one they are making is R.C.
Piles or impact driven piles where they use pile driver to
drive piles into soil. While the other one was a Steel and
commonly used was Steel H section where it was piled by
the so called, Vibratary Hammer.

Engr. Patani arrived and greet us with enthusiast. He asks

what we do outside and talk to him what we just learned.
He wants us to read the plan about steel estimation. We
compute the quantity using the spacing of reinforcements
steel as shown in the plan. The volume and the design
length of steel in U-shaped, J-shaped and just a straight.
He tells us that we must be smart on dealing with the length
of steel because in actual we don’t want to waste such
things, steel is costly, so be careful and investigate what
is needed in actual lay-outing.

This is the best day in the week, we happened to be

nice and friendly to the workers that they talk to us
much than we expected.
