Causes and effects of consumerism

Consumerism is a phenomenon that manifests itself in many different countries and

cultures around the world. Consumerism is usually portrayed as a reality only lived in the
Western countries. Although this is true, this phenomenon also occurs in the rest of the globe
and it takes various shapes and forms. All this can be mainly ascribed to two reasons: the search
for security and social pressure.

To begin with, the search for security can be related to the second level of importance
in a person’s life, according to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. In this level, security of body,
family, resources and property are found.

and powerful is a very common desire in our society nowadays. Through the purchase of goods
a person can achieve the feeling of being admired and respected by their peers, even though
this may not be true.
