EN ISO 2553
The basic welding symbol consists of an arrow line, reference line and a tail.
This symbol indicates that a joint shall be welded but not how to weld it.
System A
Is based on a dual reference line consisting of a continuous line and a
dashed line.
System B
Is based on a single reference line.
System A and B shall not be mixed and drawings shall clearly indicate
which system is being used.

Arrow line
Two or more arrow lines may be combined with a single reference line
to indicate the locations of identical welds
Broken arrow line
For butt welds in plates (excluding T-butt welds) when a specific joint
member is required to be prepared (e.g. single-bevel or single-J butt
welds), the arrow line shall have a break and point toward that member.
The arrow line need not be broken if it is obvious or if there is no
preference as to which member is to be prepared.
Reference line
System B:
System A:
• Elementary symbols shall be located on the continuous line when the
weld is to be made on the arrow side of the joint.
• Elementary symbols shall be located on the dashed (identification) line
when the weld is to be made on the other side of the joint.
Weld location
System B:
• Elementary symbols shall be located below the reference line when
the weld is to be made on the arrow side of the joint.
• Elementary symbols shall be located above the reference line when
the weld is to be made on the other side of the joint.
Tail
Tail
Instead of an open tail a closed tail can be used. This shall only be used
to indicate reference to a specific instruction e.g. reference to a welding
procedure specification (WPS).
