MULTIPLE CHOICE
8.30am
Sometimes, my daughter Isla wakes me and my husband, Gary, up, or, more often, we
wake her up. After I get up, I always check my pulse. It's usually 38-40 beats per
minute. If it is too high, I rest for the day. It's so important to listen to my body. I have a
drink and a snack while giving Isla her breakfast.
9.30am
We take Isla to nursery and then I start my training. I run, and Gary rides his bike next
to me and gives me drinks. Four times a week, I have a cold bath or go for a swim in a
lake after training.
12.30pm
I pick up Isla from nursery and we go home and I eat a big lunch of cereal and fruit.
Then I have rice and salmon, or toast and peanut butter. I try to eat as soon as possible
after training. After lunch, I play with my daughter.
2pm
I have a nap in the afternoon, and Gary usually takes Isla out while I sleep. When I
wake up, I have a drink and a snack while Isla has milk. I eat a lot during the day,
especially bananas and dark chocolate.
5pm
I go running again. In total, I run about 145 miles every week. I write about all my runs
in my training journal. I record everything, including how I feel and what the weather is
like. I train hard every other day, go on an extra long run every four days and rest every
eighth day.

In the evening, I do my exercises. These keep me strong during long runs. Isla likes to
climb on me while I stretch. Gary gives Isla her tea and cooks mine while I finish my
exercises. Then I finish cooking dinner while Gary gives Isla her bath.
7.30pm
Gary and I eat our dinner. I have red meat four times a week with rice, pasta or
potatoes, and lots of vegetables. We also eat a lot of stir-fries, because they're quick and
healthy.
8pm
We put Isla to bed and relax. I check my emails and watch TV or chat with Gary. I love
police and hospital dramas!
10.30pm
Time for bed. As I brush my teeth, I stand on one leg and then the other. This keeps my
legs strong. I enjoy reading, but I haven’t read much since Isla was born.

Clarkson is a large town. It has more than fifty thousand people living there. It
sits next to a large river, the Clark River. Every day, people take the ferry from
North Clarkson to South Clarkson to go to work.
Most people live in North Clarkson. There are many trees and the streets are very
broad. When the sun shines and the children run and play in the safe streets,
North Clarkson is a wonderful place to live.
South Clarkson has a lot of shops and factories. People don't live there, but they
come in the morning to work. There is also a big stadium where the Clarkson
Tigers play. On Sundays, many people go to watch their favorite team.

At the weekend, the people from Clarkson enjoy walking along the bank of the
Clark River. They also sail small boats on the water and if there is a little wind,
they fly kites in the large park.
Every year, Clarkson grows in size because a lot of people come to live there.

1.The last time I went to a restaurant was about 2 months ago. My wife and I
wanted to celebrate our wedding anniversary with a good meal so we went to an
expensive Italian restaurant in downtown Lisbon. We both had pasta to start and
for the main course my wife ordered a steak and I chose fish. For dessert we both
ate chocolate cake topped with fresh cream. Delicious!
3. My boyfriend loves spicy food so this restaurant was perfect. The waiters
were all really friendly and polite, and they played traditional sitar music which
was very relaxing. The menu offered vegetarian dishes as well as meat dishes
served with rice and a sauce - it depended on how hot you wanted it! I chose a
mild beef curry but my boyfriend had a lamb 'vindaloo' - he also drank 2 liters of
water!!
4. My class at the university went there last weekend. It's a very popular type
of restaurant in my country. It generally offers one type of food (a kind of bread
with cheese and tomato sauce) which you then choose what ingredients to add on
top of it. I asked for olives and mushrooms on mine and my classmates each had
something different so we could taste a piece of each person's meal.

Black Hollywood
When Cecilia leaves college in Texas, she has everything: a wonderful boyfriend, Carl,
an interesting job and an expensive house in a pretty town. Her life is perfect. Even her
black Labrador dog, Perky, is a star: he wins the local dog competition and Hollywood
wants to put him in a movie.
Cecilia goes to Hollywood with him and leaves her boyfriend alone back home. When
the studio fires Perky, Cecilia decides to stay in Hollywood and tries to get other movie
roles for her beautiful dog.
Carl gives Cecilia an ultimatum: come home and stop behaving crazily, or stay there
forever. Cecilia decides to stay in Hollywood and wants to become an actress herself.
She sends Perky back to Texas and starts an acting course. After six months, Cecilia
realizes she can't act and she misses home, but it's too late. Carl has found another
girlfriend. Cecilia tries to win him back, and also discovers a lot about herself on her
long journey.

This is a very sad movie, which makes you think about what we want from life. Patricia
Denning is very convincing as Cecilia, but the star of the movie is gorgeous Perky, the
black Labrador who steals our hearts. Black Hollywood is in cinemas from next week.

Dear Daniel,
If you'd like to improve your English, one thing you can do is to build up your
vocabulary. In order to do this, you have to practice a lot. I’m afraid there is not a short
cut for this. But there are many effective ways. First of all, you should read a lot. You
can read short stories, comics, newspapers, magazines etc. depending on your English
level. As you read, you can try to guess the meanings of unknown words from the

context of the sentence. If you cannot, then look up the definition in a dictionary.
English to English dictionary should be your first choice and keep the translator as last.
Another way of building vocabulary is to watch movies in English which will also help
with pronunciation. Try to be involved with the language as much as you can. Keep a
vocabulary notebook and write down a few words each day. Keep in mind that you
have to revise them regularly. In my opinion, to communicate with people all you need
is words. Even if you just say the words one after another, people most likely will
understand what you mean regardless of the order of the words and grammar.

Cities
Some cities are located by chance. A waggon breaks down, the driver spends some time in repairs,
finds that he is in a congenial spot, and settles down. Later another person builds a house near his, and
later someone adds an inn. Someone else starts selling farm produce there. Soon there is a little market,
which grows to a town, and later to a city.
Other places were destined by nature to become cities. London, for example, is on what is called the
head of navigation - the point where it becomes too difficult for ocean-going ships to continue upriver,
and must transfer their cargoes. As with London, the head of navigation is also the point where the
river can be conveniently bridged. In fact, the location of a bridge is often the reason for the birth of a
town - as Cambridge or Weybridge in England show. Again, a good harbor will generally lead to a city
growing up about it. New York and San Francisco began life as ports, as did Cape Town in south
Africa.
Some places were created mainly for military purposes, such as Milan, and the host of English cities
finishing with - cester, which is derived from castra which means camp in Latin. Chester itself, created
to guard the Welsh border is a very good example. Other such military bases are Manchester,
Doncaster, and of course, Newcastle.
A few cites are not created by accident, but by intention. This was the case with Milton Keynes in
England, but the most famous examples of such cities are capitals. Brasilia, Canberra and Washington
are capitals created in modern times, but even their greatest admirers will admit that they lack a certain
character. It is no co-incidence that there are famous pop songs about New York, ("New York, New
York") Chicago ("My kind of Town") San Francisco (Going to San Francisco") and many other US
cities, but none about the nation's capital. On the other hand any Londoner can give you at least three
songs about the place.

Headaches
Everyone has experienced headaches, but only recently have medical researchers begun to learn more
specifically about the causes and possible treatments for different types of headaches pain. The most
common type of headaches is the simple tension headache. Tension headaches are usually midland
short-lasting and can result from various factors, such as stress caused by worry or noise. Tension
headaches are caused by a tightening of the neck or back muscles, which slows the flow of the blood
and, therefore, oxygen to the brain. It is the lack of oxygen that causes the pain. Most headaches can be
relieved by taking a mild analgesic such as aspirin. Analgesics expand the blood vessels and restore the
normal flow of blood and oxygen to the brain.
A more serious type of headaches is the migraine. Migraine headaches are often extremely painful and
can last four hours or days. Like tension headaches, they can be the results of different factors,
including stress, hormonal changes, and allergies. Unlike tension headaches, however, they are caused
by an abnormal expansion or swelling (rather than a contraction) of the blood vessels within the head.
Medicines that shrink swollen blood vessel can be used to treat migraine headaches.
A tiny minority of headaches can be linked to severe physical problems such as head injury or brain
tumors. For these types of headaches, there are medicines to treat the symptoms, but there is no cure
unless the underlying problem is removed.
