PROJECT OVERVIEW
Rita Backer, a manager at Main Grains Food Cooperative, asked you to work with the other store
owners on Main Street to organize three summertime street fairs. You have established the dates
and vendors. You need to write a letter to the mayor confirming your agreement and asking a few
questions. Create the letter by completing the following steps. As you type the document, accept
the default paragraph and paragraph spacing until you are asked to change them. Because the
coop is currently out of letterhead, you will start the letter by typing a return address. (Note: Text
you need to type is shown in bold for ease of reference only; do not bold the text unless otherwise
instructed.)

from www.cengage.com/sam2010)

Instructions
1. Open the file NP_Word2010_T1_CP1b_FirstLastName_1.docx and save the file as
NP_Word2010_T1_CP1b_FirstLastName_2.docx before you move to the next step. Verify
that your name appears in the footer at the bottom of the document. If it does not, please
download a new copy of the start file from the SAM Web site. (Note: Do not edit the footer at
the bottom of the document.)
2. Type the following return address:

Rita Backer
Main Grains Food Cooperative
9 Main Street
Myrtle Creek, OR 99457

3. Press the Enter key twice, and then type January 5, 2013 as the date. (Hint: There should
now be exactly one blank line between the return address and the date.)

4. Press the Enter key twice, and then type this inside address:

Mayor Elizabeth Townsend

Dumont Borough Hall
45 Elm Street
Dumont, OR 99752

5. Press the Enter key twice, type the salutation Dear Mayor Townsend: (don’t forget the
colon), and then press the Enter key once.

6. Type the following paragraph:

Thank you so much for agreeing to help sponsor the Summer Street Fairs. They will
not only benefit the store owners of our town, but will also be tremendous fun for
our friends and neighbors. Before I can publicize these three events, I need some
information. Please call by Tuesday with your answers to these questions:

7. Press the Enter key, and then type the following questions as separate paragraphs, using the
default paragraph spacing:

Can you confirm the dates for June, July, and August?
Will you be available to speak at each event?
How early can we set up in the municipal parking lot on the event day?
How can we arrange for security and trash removal?

8. Insert a new paragraph after the last question, and then type the complimentary closing
Sincerely, (including the comma).

9. Press the Enter key twice to leave room for the signature, and then type Rita Backer. Press
the Enter key and type Main Grains Food Cooperative.

10. Select the four paragraphs containing the questions and italicize them.

11. Select the first three lines of the return address and remove the paragraph spacing after each
line (e.g., change the Spacing After value to be 0). Do the same for the first three lines of the
inside address and for the signature line “Rita Backer”. Do not change the Spacing After
value for the fourth line of the return address or for the fourth line of the inside address (both
of which should still have the Spacing After value of 10).
