FIRST INTERNAL EXAMINATION, AUGUST 2016

Fifth Semester
Branch: Naval Architecture and Ship Building Engineering (NA & SB)
ST010 503 Material Science
Time: 90 min Maximum: 50 Marks

Part A(3x3=9marks)
(Answer all questions)
1. State three important applications of miller indices
2. Define a unit cell and how is it specified.
3. Explain concept of a phase in alloys
4. Elaborate application of material science in shipbuilding?? (Carries two marks only)

Part B (3x5=15marks)
(Answer all questions)
(Each question carries 5 marks)
5. Define conduction. State the Fourier’s law of heat conduction.
6. Define the following non dimensional numbers:-
(a) Nusselt number; (b) Prandtlnumber (C) Grashoff number
7. Enumerate any five desirable properties of an ideal refrigerant.

PART C(Answer any three)(3 x8=24marks)

(Each full question carries 8 marks)
8. Explain Bravais lattice and name any seven of them
9. A 15-cm-diameter stainless steel ball (ρ=8055 kg/m3, Cp= 480 J/kg · °C) is removed from the oven at a
uniform temperature of 300°C (Fig. 7–24). The ball is then subjected to the flow of air at 1 atm pressure
and25°C with a velocity of 3 m/s. The surface temperature of the ball eventually drops to 200°C.
Determine the average convection heat transfer coefficient during this cooling process and estimate
how long the process. Given dynamic viscosity of air at 250oC is 2.76*10-5Kg/m .s. The properties of air
at 25oC and 1 atm are k= 0.02551 W/m. oC, √=1.562*10-5m2/s, µ= 1.849*10-5kg/m. s and Pr=0.7296
10. Explain about materials used for thermal insulation.
11. (a) The surface of a blackbody is at 500 K temperature. Obtain the total emissive power, the
wavelength of the maximum monochromatic emissive power
(b) If a stainless steel body reflects 45% of the incident solar radiation, what will be the absorptivity
and transmissivity?
