1. A 4 pole lap wound dc shunt motor rotates at the speed of 1500 rpm, has a flux of 0.4mWb
and the total number of conductors are 1000. What is the value of emf?

2. A 4 pole, DC shunt motor has lap connected armature winding. The flux per pole is 30mWb.
The number of armature conductors is 250. When connected to 230V DC supply it draws an
armature current of 40 A. Calculate the counter emf and the speed with which motor is
running. Assume armature resistance is 0.6.

3. Difference between the separately excited machine and the self excited machine.

4. Sketch the schematic of three different types of DC motors. Label clearly the components
and the direction of the current flows.

circuit.

7. With the aid of equations, explain how a shunt DC motor responds to an increase of load.

8. Sketch the complete schematic diagrams of following motors:


i. DC series motor.
ii. DC shunt motor.
Label clearly the components and direction of current in both motors. Draw a power flow
diagram of DC series motor and DC shunt motor.

9. A DC shunt motor draws a current of 15A from a 210V supply voltage. The speed of the
motor is 1500rpm. The armature resistance and the field resistance are 0.5 and 150
respectively. Determine;
a) The field and the armature current
b) The induced armature voltage
c) The output torque if rotational loss is 200W
d) The efficiency of the motor
e) Draw the copper losses and power flow diagram for this type of motor

10. A 230 V DC series motor has the following parameters.


Ra = 0.25 Ω Rf = 0.1 Ω Rotational loss = 250 W
On full load, the line current is 40 A and the motor runs at 1,200 rpm. Assume the linear
relationship between the field flux and the field current.
i) Determine the torque developed by the motor.
ii) Determine the speed and the torque developed if the motor draws 20 A.

b) Find the no-load speed given that the no-load current is 1 A.

13. A 24 hp, 240v, 1000 rpm separately-excited DC motor delivers power to a mechanical load.
The armature resistance of the motor is 0.1. The speed of the motor is 1000 rpm and the
current drawn from the supply is 80A.
a. Draw and label the power flow diagram of the motor.
b. Calculate the counter e.m.f and the developed torque on the motor.
c. Determine the rotational loss and efficiency of the motor.
d. If the speed is reduced by 2% with the flux remains constant, calculate new counter
e.m.f

and determine:
a. The field and armature current.
b. The input power.
c. The field copper and armature copper losses.
d. The output torque of the motor.
e. The efficiency of the motor.
f. Power flow diagram of the motor.

15. A 15hp, 120V series DC motor has an armature resistance of 0.12 and a series field
resistance of 0.06. The rated speed of the motor is 1050 r/min. At full load, the motor is
connected to 120V voltage supply and the input current is 115A.

b. Calculate the copper loss of the motor
c. Determine the armature voltage and developed power
