TIMBER DESIGN 2018

TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION

LOCATION
A two-storey residential building with 4 bed rooms and 3 comfort rooms located
at Kunanan St., Pob., Looc, Romblon.

OWNER
Mr. and Mrs. Decrepalmon

TOTAL FLOOR AREA:

155.52 SQ.M

OBJECTIVE

This project aims to design a two-storey residential building made up of timber

particularly Guijo, Yakal and Apitong. In particular, this aims:
• To meld together the different Engineering principles in Engineering Mechanics,
Mechanics of Deformable Bodies, Theory of Structures and Timber Design.
• To design a two-storey structure using the different available standard sizes of
wood.
• To design a safe and sound two- storey residential timber structure and in the
most economical way possible.

INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES (ILOs):

At the end of this project the students must be able to:

• Apply the different Engineering principles and methods in designing a two-storey
timber structure.
• Learn the different details needed in creating a structural plan of a two-storey
timber structure.
• Know the different standard dimensions of purlins, floor joist, beams, columns
pedestal and foundation.

STUDENT OUTCOMES (SOs):

SO(1):
Design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze, and interpret data, and
synthesize information to provide valid conclusions for investigating complex problems.

SO(2):
Use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering
practice in complex engineering activities.
TIMBER DESIGN 2018
SO(3):
Communicate effectively on complex engineering activities with various communities
including engineering experts and society at large using appropriate level of discourse.

SCOPE AND LIMITATION:

 The project is limited only to the design of purlins, design of truss including its top
and bottom chords, design of floor joist, design of floor joist at comfort room,
design of girder beam in roof and second floor, design of exterior columns and
interior columns and lastly the design of pedestal and foundation. Impact loads
and earthquake loads are neglected in the design.

METHODOLOGY

 Identify the wood to be use and its allowable stresses
