The Hózhó Way

Acrylic Based Painting

Created by Noelle John

Inspired by the Navajo philosophy, ‘The Hózhó Way,’ this Native American art
piece portrays ‘Hózhó’ from a personal perspective as a variety of symbolical meanings
are expressed by both from a cultural background of the Diné, and artistic interpretation
of the common Native American artist styles. As a Navajo-Hopi, I wanted to depict both
the essence of what ‘Hózhó’ not only meant to me but as well as to other people of the
Diné.

For the final result, I created a visual representation of both Balance and
Harmony, including a very common style practiced among Native American artists like
myself. Ceremonial instruments painted amongst a vivid background of a wide range of
gradient colors that include abstract designs such as lines and patterns.

To illustrate, ‘The Hózhó Way,’ I included two sections of color gradients of reds,
yellows, and greens to depict a sunrise and sundown. In many tribes, there are four
directions and from a Navajo perspective, the rise and fall of the sun is sacred. In the
middle, I embellished a set of a drum with a deerskin hide over top, a teepee with a
gourd rattle and staff protruding from behind it over the colorful background. This alone
represents key elements to ceremonial practices to many Native Americans, as well as
the Diné which is something I was set on incorporating. These are the essential tools
that represent ceremonies, as well as being apart of them. As for the traditional pattern
that ran just below the middle of the painting, from an artists perspective, it is
aesthetically pleasing but as a Native artist, it is also an element commonly incorporated
into Native American styles that are seen as a trademark of sorts, which is why I felt
very strongly about including it.
