Problem Solving Final Draft

The first problem solving artifact is a Varicella IDP that was completed in Fall of 2016.

In this IDP I was assigned to research Varicella, make a children's book, come up with a call to

action, and present this information to a panel of health professionals. This assignment fits into

the problem solving category because my group and I came up with a solution to a problem

affecting the community. What I learned from this assignment was about ways to prevent

Varicella.

The second problem solving artifact is a Lead Toxicity IDP that was completed in Spring

of 2019. On this assignment I was asked to research lead toxicity in our area and also collect data

on the levels of lead toxicity in the soil gathered from homes in Huntington Park. I was also

asked to plant two plants, one using home soil and another using organic soil. After this, we

came up with a call to action that my group and I presented to a panel of health professionals.

This IDP fits into the problem solving category because we came up with a solution to a problem

in our community, as well as solved a problem occurring in our group that did not let us work to

our full potential. I learned from this assignment that communication within the group is very

important.

Student Led Outcomes that I demonstrated while doing both these IDPs were being a

critical thinker and an effective communicator. I demonstrated being a critical thinker by

identifying the problem with toxicity, thinking of a solution to lead toxicity issues in our area,

and also analyzing the lab results of the soil collected from homes. I also demonstrated being an
effective communicators by making sure the audience had a full understanding of what I was

saying, presenting in front of health professionals to raise awareness, and also communicating

with each other in our group about our group roles. Some areas of growth I have seen within

myself are better presentation skills, a better understanding of the SLOs, and having courage to

present in front of a panel. Some areas I still need to improve on are being able to memorize

bigger parts of a presentation, and also be prepared for any questions I am asked. I can use these

skills in the future by presenting to a group of people about an important issue without having a

problem. I can also work in a group in the future and communicate when working a job that

requires a group effort.
