Wings vs.

Wheels Design Journal

Produced By:
- Lander Murray -
- Madison Miller -
- Grant Podhajsky -
- Caden Laviaguerre -
Our journal for the Wings vs. Wheels project is unlike the others. We have
combined each of our group member’s journals so it is possible to see the process
each member took through the project. Not only does this make it possible to better
understand our process but it also unites us as a group, shine brighter with our
strengths and allows us to personalize how we express our process. Our journal is
organized by date then broken down by each individual, while the table of contents is
broken down by week. Later in the project we gladly welcomed Caden Laviaguerre to
our group

Grant:
Situation Today we went to the Forney Transportation Museum and filled out a scavenger hunt
document and reflection.

Affect This trip was all great but I really struggled with filling out the document and really
being able to explore and learn everything the museum had to offer. Having just an
hour and a half really made it difficult to learn with the limited time.

Interpretation I learned a lot about the individual planes, trains, and automobiles. Learning a lot about
the history and evolution of the cars really opened my eyes on why cars are the way
they are now.

Decision I’ve decided that I would like to design and create an airplane because I have already
done a similar project with cars. I also would love to learn more about the physics of
how airplanes fly. I know some basic material but I am itching to learn more in depth
material.

Lander:
On this day we went to the Forney Transportation Museum and got an overview of the evolution of American
transportation including planes trains and cars. I learned many interesting facts about the start and journey of
transportation and physical examples of each stage in the form of antique cars, planes, and steam engines.
Some of the most interesting and memorable things that I found out about transportation are that electric cars
and agile planes that I thought were modern have actually existed for almost a century. I hope that I can learn
many more interesting facts as well as great designs for planes and vehicles in the future of this intensive and
later life.

Forney Museum of Transportation Entry Event Responses:

1916 Detroit Electric Opera Coupe - This car was one of the first well working electric cars. The car has state
of the art long lasting batteries and padding to mitigate vibration. I thought that electric cars were a recent
acquisition to transportation so I was surprised to see one from 1916.

1923 Hispano Suiza Victoria Town Car - 6 cylinders were used in this car to increase speed and performance
as well as the vehicle being so big it had 6 wheels and 3 rows of seating which impressed me.

Compare and Contrast limousines from the 20th and 21st century - The Pierce Arrow Limousine was an
extreme luxury car of its time and had some of the first fender headlamps. It was also bigger and required a
larger engine. Modern limousines however are still big with much space for personnel but due to years of
perfection they have smaller, more powerful engines and even more space for seating. It was cool for me to
see where the modern limousine started and how many innovations have been made to improve it.

Rolls-Royce Company - The Rolls-Royce was considered a great company from its start as it took in
technologies such as 4-wheel drum brakes and two spark plugs per cylinder. That quality has been carried
over to the modern Rolls-Royce’s as they are still a big name in the world of luxury cars.

The “Gold-Bug” - Amelia Earhart was a pioneer for female aviators. She was the first woman to fly over the
Atlantic and The first woman to fly from Hawaii to the U.S. mainland. The 1923 Kissel Speedster (“Gold-Bug”)
was a gift from Amelia’s Father that she drove for 7 years. It was cool to see the exact car that originally
belonged to Amelia Earhart.

The Evolution of Transportation - Cars started out as motorised carts but quickly became the most popular
mode of transportation to own. Today we have cars that have a sleek design and are much more reliable.
From the early 1900s when the car was first invented, it has been improved upon over the century into the
diverse multitude of modern cars. I believe that, in the future, Our cars will be faster and safer maybe even with
self driving cars. I believe that as human impatience and laziness increases, that speed will be wanted by
many so they don't spend to much time on the road and self driving cars will be mandatory to relieve the stress
of driving in ever increasing heavy traffic.

Situation: What actually happened? Today for the Wings Vs. Wheels engineering class, I
went on a field trip to Forney (a car museum) to
observe cars, trains, and planes dating back from the
1900’s. Each student was given a sheet of paper to
write out their observations. My observations at the
museum will later connect to my project.

Affect: What was its impact on you personally? This trip has impacted me personally by giving me a
handful of ideas to incorporate into my project.
Looking at the different designs on the automobiles
has inspired me to create something unique rather
than something standard. However, I would have
liked to have more time to really observe the
automobiles and their structures.
Interpretation: What did you learn from the From the experience, I learned that back in the day
experience? people were actually quite advanced in engineering
because they had created electric cars, bikes, and
trains to help them get around rather than use the
standard horse and carriage.

Decision: What did you decide to do so as to become As a result, I chose to create a plane because I do
a better engineer/designer? not know much about planes, and I would like to
build upon my weaknesses. My other reasoning for
wanting to design a plane is because when my dad
was 14 he designed model airplanes, and to this day
he still does that as a hobby.

Grant:
Situation Today we decided to organize our thoughts and compile our journals to make sure
everything is ready to go for our intensive. We decided to make the wings detachable so we
can see what type of wing works best. Our idea for the prototype is to really focus on how
the body will look and snap the different wings on and off.

Affect I am beginning to get really excited on executing this project. I am hoping I can lead my
group and work with them so we can create an airplane that will fly the longest.

Interpretation I have begun to learn how each member in my group learns, works and what they are good
at.

Decision I have decided to really step up and bring my group together to lead them so they are able
to create an airplane, marketing, and history that they are proud of. I will encourage and
keep everyone with their eyes on the goal.

Lander:
I created the documents to journal and get ideas for the plane and shared the entire folder with my group. We
did research on the best wing and plane designs. I started on my rough draft for the cardboard plane. I am not
expecting the cardboard plane to fly but I will try my best to get it up.

Madison:

Situation: What actually happened? For the Wings Vs. Wheels engineering class we
were divided into groups of three that consisted of
one freshman, and sophomore, and one junior. We
all introduced each other, and Grant (the junior)
immediately took first initiative by creating a group
chat. We each shared our strengths for this project,
and each described what our work ethics are like.
Later, me and my group members shared ideas
about what our structure should consist of and look
like. Lander and Grant created a folder (on gmail) for
the group to act as a journal, and I began to sketch
out a possible design for our airplane.

Affect: What was its impact on you personally? The situation today impacted me personally by giving
me a preview of what my group members are like. I
am excited to start engineering, and getting to get to
know my group members better.

Interpretation: What did you learn from the The experience I had with my group today has
experience? shown me that my group members are reliable, and
contribute to ideas. I know that Grant has experience
in building models, and prefers/likes to be organized.
Lander is contributive, and knows a little about plane
structures.

Decision: What did you decide to do so as to become Overall, I let Grant and Lander create a journal, and I
a better engineer/designer? decided to draw out a possible design for our plane.
To become a better engineer, I made sure to
incorporate everyone’s ideas and document my
actions.

Situation Kinematics notes:

- Displacement is a change in an object position.

- Δx = xfinal – xinital

- They did start and end in the same place but Alan took a longer
because he didn’t take the most direct route.
- Average Velocity - Displacement of an object divided by the interval of when

the displacement occurred (distance/time)

- Average Velocity equation only works with constant acceleration

- Velocity is a slope
- rise/run
- Distance/time

- Average Acceleration - change in velocity over time .

- Average Acceleration looks like the right side of a standard quadratic

Acceleration from gravity on Earth is 9.81 meters per second2

Affect I learned a lot about some basic physics. I thought it was interesting to see how a
lot of this math that I’ve already known can be used to analyze movement in our
world. I think it’s cool to see how some simple math can go so far.

Interpretation I learned really how to apply the math that I’ve learned. I didn’t totally know how I
could apply some of this math but being able to use it with moving objects is
interesting because it puts the data in a different form to view.

Decision I will use this information to better understand how the flight of our aircraft is
effected. I will search to find new ways to use the math I already know in this
project.

Lander:
Notes on Kinematics:

Displacement - A change in an object position. (In any direction measured in meters)Δx = xfinal – xinital
Although Eva and Alan started and ended in the same place Alan took a longer less direct path that resulted in
him using more energy.

Average Velocity - Displacement over a Time Interval. (m/s)

Average Velocity only works with constant acceleration

Velocity in a graph is Slope. Or there is a Position vs. Time Graph

Instantaneous Velocity = Speed

Average Acceleration - change in velocity over time .

Average Acceleration is a parabola on a graph.

Acceleration due to gravity on Earth is 9.81 meters per second squared.

All this math is basic but necessary for everything we do in Wings vs. Wheels.

Situation Today we finished our prototype. We didn’t go into too much detail because we are going to
make the wings detachable and be able to be swapped out so we can test different wing types.

Affect This beginning to the project has really got my mind working on how we will design the airplane
to have detachable wings. I’m really focusing on how to design the joint between the wings and
the body of the plane.

Interpretation I learned a little about how our group will function together. We have some members who have
some amazing ideas but they are quiet so they don’t express their ideas as well. We have
some members who have a lot of knowledge on certain topics of this project. I believe that this
group will be a power group because we all have strengths that others in our group don’t have.

Decision I will be encouraging to those who are struggling. I will also encourage to express unshared
ideas and explore areas that the group members aren’t too strong in. I will also explore the
areas that I’m not strong in myself.

Lander:
I started work on and finished out cardboard model, it flys for about ten feet but then it flips and lands on its tail
because the front causes to much lift. I will increase lift on the back and weight on the front to increase flight
time and stability.

History of Transportation Project:

1. Right after World War 1, U.S. Railroads hit their peak at 254,000 miles.
Source : https://wwi.lib.byu.edu/index.php/The_Role_of_Railways_in_the_War
The most likely reason for the huge peak of U.S. railroads was transporting materials for
manufacturing for the war effort and for transporting troops. From the Civil War, America learned the
value of railroads in a war effort for transporting troops and ammunitions and that is probably why in
World War 1, the railroads hit their peak.

2. After JFK was elected, Alan Shepard became the first American in space.
Source:
https://www.nasa.gov/feature/john-f-kennedy-and-nasa
JFK was one of the biggest supporters of the Space program at NASA because of his desire to have space
supremacy over the Soviet Union. The Russians were pressuring the U.S. with the Cold War and their
continued victories in being the first to do something in space, so JFK wanted to show that America had the
technology as well and maybe even better technology.

Situation Today I worked with Jimmy and Kalvyn and we completed the Kinematics lab. This lab
consisted of analyzing how objects move and accelerate. We translated the data to graphs.

Affect This project changed my thinking on how objects move. I spent a lot of time looking at the
graphs to understand why they had a negative slope or were upside down.

Interpretatio Once I realized why that they were upside down and the slopes were messed up I could
n understand what they graphs meant. The reason why they were messed up is because of
having objects move right to left instead of vice versa. Also, they were messed up because the
videos became oriented poorly.

Decision Next time I use this program I will make sure the objects move left to right. I will also set up a
stand to keep the frames steady and oriented properly. I will continue to use this program to
learn more about how math relates to the world around us.

Planning:
I am thinking of modeling our aircraft around the Antonov AN-2 because of its slow takeoff speed at 30 mph.
This means that the plane has a lot of lift and will be able to sustain flight when put into the proportions of a
small light-weight wood model. I will however make changes to modify it to what we need to be the most
successful with our design.

Madison:
Situation: What actually happened? Today for Wings Vs. Wheels, we were assigned to

(members outside of my original group) immediately
began to sketch out a diagram of what we would be
doing, and eventually moved on to start the lab. We
recorded a moving toy car, a dropped tennis ball,
and each of us walking a normal pace three times
each. Unfortunately we only got as far as graphing
the videos, and did not complete todays lab, yet.

Affect: What was its impact on you personally? Personally, I never thought I could create an
equation or table for a moving object, yet I have been
proven wrong. This small experience has showed me
that a lot goes into engineering, and it’s more than
just blueprints and wood.

Interpretation: What did you learn from the From this experience I learned how to graph moving

Situation Today I researched what book I will read for my intensive. I instantly thought of reading Wild
Black Yonder or Boys on a Boat.

Affect The beginning of reading a book and researching a book to me is very exciting. I love learning
about a good book that I will enjoy. I am getting excited to begin reading boys on the boat.

Interpretatio I personally learned about new books and even movies that I could read and watch that I would
n be interested in. I am not the biggest fan of reading and I struggle with finding something to read
but now I have like 3 books in mind that I am interested in .

Decision I decided that during this book I will really focus on my reading speed and comprehension. I
either have speed and no comprehension or comprehension and absolutely no speed.

Interpretatio I strengthened my knowledge of those types of math problems because I struggled so much

Situation Today I took notes on Newton’s 3 laws.

Affect Forces
- Cause objects to accelerate
- Through contact
- Through field forces
- Gravitational
- Magnetic
- Newton
- N=kg*m/s2
- 1st law (inertia)
- Object in motion will stay in motion
- Object at rest will stay at rest
- Unless acted upon an outside force
- 2nd law
- F=m*a
- Law of acceleration
- Constant force with larger mass = smaller acceleration
- Constant force with smaller mass = lager acceleration
- 3rd law
- With every action force there is an equal and opposite reaction force
- Action force (being applied)
- Reaction force (what happens)
- Forces variables in problems
- mg for the force of gravity (weight)
- N for the normal force (surface)
- FD for drag/air resistance
- Fs for the force of static friction (stationary)
- Fk for the force of kinetic friction (moving)
- Fa for an applied force
- T for tension
- FR Kx for the restoring force on a spring (or rubber band)
- FThrust force provided by source of energy

Interpretatio I learned a lot but most of this was review for me. It really refreshed my memory of the physics
n and how we interact with the world. I feel like this will help us a lot with us striving to have the
longest flying airplane.

Decision I will look for ways to apply this in our project and I will continue to try to remember which law is
which. I am always getting them mixed up and then forgetting because I confuse myself. I am

experience connects to Newton’s first law (An object
at rest remains at rest , and an object in motion
continues in motion with constant velocity unless

Forces Notes -
Forces, when applied, cause an object to accelerate.
A Push or Pull ( Contact ) causes an object to exert forces or have forces exerted on it.
Forces can be caused by objects from a distance with electric and magnetic fields.
A Newton is the unit for force.
Newton’s First Law (The Law of Inertia)
- An object in motion tends to stay in motion, an object at rest tends to stay at rest unless acted upon by
an unbalanced force.
Inertia: An object's tendency to resist changes in motion.
Mass affects inertia.
Newton’s Second Law
- In the presence of a net force, an object will experience an acceleration.
Sum of forces has to equal zero for the object in question to stand still. (at equilibrium)
Newton’s Third Law
- For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
Forces always exist in pairs.
Concept Check:
Baseball vs. Tennis Ball -
1. The Baseball
2. The Baseball
3kg plane 5N or 7N -
7N will give more acceleration.
5N on 3kg vs. 4kg -
3kg has the greater acceleration.
Free Falling object -
Gravity pulls down the object, but friction from air molecules produces an upward force that will reduce the
overall downward force.

Affect: What was its impact on you personally? This advertisement impacted me greatly because
before I began to work on the advertisement on

Affect: What was its impact on you personally? The impact of this lab had on me was that it served as
a visual for Newton’s Laws. For example, for every
action has a reaction, this law was tested with
washers. We flicked one washer at a stack of 5
washers, and only one washer was pushed. The action
was flicking the “outside washer” at the “inside
washer”, and the reaction was the “outside washer”
taking the “inside washer’s” place while it took the
“outside washer’s” momentum and eventually falling
off the table.

Situation Today I began building my design for my airplane. I cut up the pieces of
balsa needed for the frame of the wing and glued the frame together.

Affect This got a little frustrating because I discovered that the glue isn’t the
strongest. I am worried that the joints won’t be the strongest. The way I dealt
with this is I put a lot of glue to insure the joints will hold and I inserted
supports to make sure everything is strong enough.

Interpretation I learned how this project will unfold with the creation of the airplane and
what problems I might come across. I learned how difficult this will be in
creating the airplane but how well it could work.

Decision I will put extra effort and extreme precision into creating my airplane so that I
can make it fly for minutes.

Lander:
Today, I worked on designing the wings of my airplane, I had to carve the airfoil, and that took the longest time
out of all the processes. The airfoil I used is bigger to make the plane have more lift, but it adds weight. The
weight however is from balsa wood, so I’m not to worried about the weight. I am still working on my attachment
mechanism for the wings, I am thinking about a hook or clasp. I will incorporate some of what I learned from
my book and aviation day into my final design.

Situation: What actually happened? Today for Wings Vs. Wheels I finished writing my
aerodynamic notes.

Affect: What was its impact on you personally? This assignment impacted me by helping me have
some background knowledge on aerodynamics, and
what types of shapes were appropriate to generate
lift/flight.

Interpretation: What did you learn from the From these notes I learned that you can’t just create
experience? any type of wing structure or tail. The tail can’t be no
longer than the wings, and the wings need to to have
a slight curve to guide airflow to the wings. I also
learned that the base of a plane needs to have a curve
in order to direct airflow to it’s wings

Decision: What did you decide to do so as to become To become a better engineer, I decided to watch Mr.

aerodynamics.

Caden:

October 2

Grant:
Situation Today I took notes on aerodynamics and how it affects objects moving
through air.

Affect Aerodynamics is the study of how moving air flows across objects and affects
the way they move.

Bernoulli’s principle
- High velocity = low pressure
- Low velocity = high pressure
- This can be used to study how airplanes and birds fly
Coefficient drag
- The ability to cut through the air with the shape will effect the top
speed
- The lover Cd the more aerodynamic the shape is
Downforce
- This is created from the airflow over a car from the front and the
spoilers
- This lowers maximum velocity but enables the car to stay on the road
through corners by holding the car to the ground
Spoilers
- Create downforce to create stability on a car at high speeds

Interpretation A lot of this was review for me other than a few vocab words. It was great to
review a lot of this content because I could easily use this in my design for
my airplane. To stabilize it and create more lift.

Decision I will check my design of my airplane so that I am able to make the most of
my design and create the best stability/lift.

Lander:
I worked more on the wings and they are starting to take shape, a good, sleek shape. I am happy with the way
my wings are going but there is a lot I need to work on when it comes to the body of the airplane. I need it to be
sturdier and smoother.

Madison:

Situation: What actually happened? Today for Wings Vs. Wheels I am still in the process
of shaping, gluing, and assembling my plane.

Affect: What was its impact on you personally? The impact I had while building my plane made me
think of all the hard work the Wright Brothers put
into their plane, and how many times they had to
modify their ideas. This thought make me think that it
is okay to fail because I can learn from my mistakes,
and modify them until I reach success.

Interpretation: What did you learn from the From this experience I learned that building a plane
experience? comes with more than just a thought. When building
a plane, I need to consider aerodynamics, physics,
kinematics, and more to make a plane fly.

Decision: What did you decide to do so as to become To become a better engineer, I asked my dad-who is

Situation Today I researched some relationships between the Industrial
Revolution/WWI and how those major events affected the history of
transportation.

Affect The Industrial Revolution spanned between 1780 to 1900. It had a slow start
until the mid 1800’s when everything began to pick up speed from producing
steel, machinery, and new/improved inventions. The industrial revolution
produced the bicycle in 1817 which is now the most efficient form of
transportation ever invented. Along with the bicycle in 1873 the first cable
powered public transportation line was invented in San Francisco. These
cable cars opened the doors for mass transit systems.

Aside from the Industrial Revolution World War 1 began in 1914. WWI began
the use of airplanes which only increased from there. The B.E.2 was primarily
used to fly over enemy trenches to gather information that previously wasn’t
able to be gathered before. Following WWI, in 1923 Army Air Service
Lutennet Oakley Kelly and John Macready flew from New York to San
Francisco without refueling. They completed the first continental flight.

Whether it is the Industrial Revolution or World War I both major events in

history opened many doors to move forward with our transportation ability.
The Industrial Revolution kicked it off with the bicycle and the cable car
whereas WW1 extended the uses for flight and warfare. Both events created
major impacts on the way our world gets around today.

Interpretation I learned a lot about those two events because as I was researching I
decided to recede from researching the big inventions like the railroad, cotton
gin and topics that are most common. Instead, I researched new inventions
and improvements that aren’t big topics. I found that some of the topics that
aren’t very big to talk about are some of the more fascinating and important
inventions to today’s world like the bicycle and the airplane.

Decision In the future I will focus more on researching less talked about topics
because I have found there is always more interesting things to learn from
them that may not appear in the bigger topics.
Lander:
I finished the frame of everything and I started putting on the tissue paper. I am hoping that the plane is light
enough because the wire felt heavy. I will try and use balsa wood instead of wire for wing attachments.

Madison:

Situation: What actually happened? Today for Wings Vs. Wheels i’ve finally finished
building my wings and tail. All that I need to do now
is attach my wings to my plane, and put something on
the outside of my wing’s frames to help airflow flow

Affect: What was its impact on you personally? This assignment impacted me personally by letting
me get a taste of an engineer’s job. It is easy to come
up with an idea, yet hard to determine if the “idea” is
aerodynamic.

Interpretation: What did you learn from the From this experience I learned how to sand, cut, and
experience? glue balsa wood together, and create curves in my
wings to shape them they way I wanted them to be.

Decision: What did you decide to do so as to become To become a better designer, I did my best to remain

Aerodynamics Notes-
● Aerodynamics is the study of airflow around a body in motion
● Velocity is high then pressure is low and the opposite as well.
● Bernoulli’s Principle, high to low pressure caused by velocity of air

● Drag is a coefficient where friction is in play of a fluid travelling around an object.

● Downforce is created by reversing an airfoil and it is used on cars and spoilers on cars also increase
downforce.

● Aerodynamics helps vehicles and aircraft use air to help them or mitigate drag from air friction.

Interpretation: What did you learn from the I did not learn anything when gluing paper onto the

the shorter you stretch and twirl a rubber band, the
longer the rubber band will spin the propeller.

Affect I really struggled transfering my work atmosphere from at school to at home. I had
everything organized at school so when I transfered everything to my house I really

Situation For the past week I have been testing and trying to fly my airplane. Each time its been
tested I’ve made 1 or modifications to the it.

Affect I have really had to persevere with my airplane. It hasn’t been easy but slowly I’m making
progress. I have come across a lot of mountains but I’ve found that sometimes it needs a
little thought and others it needs a lot of thought to get over the challenges

Interpretation The further into this project I get the more I’m understanding what would make this project
easier. I’ve already figured out the wheels/axle problem with getting the wheels to move
freely and easily which was my biggest barrier. That wasn’t the only problem. If I were to
make another airplane there are a few things I would change. I would keep the produce bag
as the liner but instead or having wood for the crossbars in the wing I would use wire to be
able to add more shape and have a lighter wing. I would also not use wire for the legs of
the airplane. Instead I would use balsa wood as a sturdy frame and add the axle to the
base of the frame so there is no possible bending. I would also spend extra time to make
sure the propeller sits perpendicular to the ground because as I’ve been testing my
propeller and slowly been pulled to angle slightly to the ground and not forward. So far I
have been able to cope with those imperfections but it would really benefit the results if
those changes are made.
Decision Moving forward I will change what I can to improve the airplane and incorporate the new
changes to the best of my ability.

Lander:
Without the secondary wings, it is faster and I can feel the lift while carrying it, but the rubber band is not
powerful enough to get the plane fast enough. I then tried testing lengths of the rubber bands and found that
shorter is more powerful but doesnt last as long but if the band is to short there is the same lack of power. I
ended up using a length that is mostly the length of the airplane but about an inch shorter.

Affect I only worked on preparing this journal to be ready to share and it became very
exhausting. I made great time and progress. I hope each member of my group uses
my feedback and thought provoking questions to take their journal entries to another
level.

Interpretation I am continuing to learn that I make the most progress and I am the most productive
if I can work on one task at a time without jumping between my to dos. I just need to
focus one one thing for a longer period of time.

Decision In the future I will incorporate more of working on one task for longer periods of time

move onto another task if possible to continue to make progress.

Lander:
I finished with my design and tried to take away as much weight as possible, but it still doesn't get off
