CREATIVE ARTS SCHOLARSHIP

Creative Arts may include, but are not limited to: visual arts, music, theater, graphic arts, & photography.

This scholarship for $1,000, given by the Christian family in memory of Elaine Christian, who had a passion for
the Arts, will go to: 1) a CHS graduate, 2) with at least a 2.5 GPA, 3) that has been actively involved in the Art’s
at CHS, and 4) plans on a career in the Arts.

Your short term and long term career goals: I plan to enhance performance skills in musical theater as well as
piano and viola to perform, compose, and instruct.

Describe your passion for the arts and why you should be chosen for this award (Use the reverse side, if
necessary, to expand on your response.):

My senior project this year is music composition in which I have written pieces for the piano, duets involving
violas and violins, and musical theater styled songs in which student performers at CHS have performed. With
this opportunity, I have emulated and explored many styles of music while implementing my own musicality and
style. In addition, composing for many different instruments, I have learned the limits and range of each
instrument which have urged me to strengthen my own skills in the performance of each instrument. I know this
experience in composition has changed and positioned me as a performer knowing that many musical theater
major students never experience the wide variety of facets within performance arts. I have become not only a
performer but an artist who is able to create new material, of which I am able to direct and share. I look forward
within college and afterwards to composing, directing, and exploring the wide culmination of skills required
within the business of musical theater that I know I will enjoy!

I am currently teaching myself viola and guitar as well as studying vocal technique and performance with Laura
Thoreson. In addition, I volunteer at Oregon Children’s Theater, performing in mainstage shows as well as
teaching classes. My involvement in the arts at CHS ranges from a tenor Select Vocal Ensemble Choir as well as
an active Thespian in the CHS Drama department, performing in the musicals and plays all four years.
