Last year, with the celebration of
our 30th anniversary, we launched
GOLDENBOOK CENTRO DE
PORTUGAL dedicated to four of
the main regions of this vast and
fascinating tourist destination.
The challenge that we set ourselves
of this new GOLDENBOOK achieved
excellent results with an acceptance
that exceeded our expectations on the
part of clients and the Hotels where
it was placed in the respective rooms,
which is an encouragement for the
launch of this 2nd edition that we
hereby offer you now.
In it, the national and international
visitors to the regions of Coimbra, Ria
de Aveiro, Viseu Dão Lafões and Oeste
find a whole set of suggestions to help
make their stays there as pleasant
and interesting as possible, ranging
from culture, shopping, gastronomy,
sightseeing, etc.
Beginning in print and then evolving
also to the internet site and the app
for mobile phones, so that travellers
do not miss any of the unique
moments that our country has to
offer, GOLDENBOOK has spent more
than 30 years portraying the main
tourist destinations of Portugal,
accompanying their history and
evolution.
Over three decades we have come to
publish six annual destinations that
provide a wealth of information for
Portuguese and foreign tourists. All
this has been made possible thanks
to the continued support of our clients
and partners, some of which have
been with us since the beginning.

Coimbra is a muse for poets, an
inspiration for musicians, a home for
students, a setting for novels and historic
happenings, a witness to the past and
the dynamic centre of a region that is
bounded by both sea and uplands.
Visit Coimbra and experience the hustle
and bustle of a university city that is
also a World Heritage site, a city of
culture, of knowledge and of leisure, an
amphitheatre reflected in the waters of
the River Mondego.
Coimbra, the city that fado refers to as
the city “of loves”, “of tears”, and “of
scholars”... A city whose hallmark is the
university and its tower, the place to go for
the most amazing views. Then there is the
Sé Velha (Old Cathedral), the churches and
the Santa Clara Monasteries, the town
walls, the Machado de Castro National
Museum with its exhibits of fine art and
royal treasures, and important Roman
buildings, unlike any others anywhere else
in Portugal. And the ruins of Conímbriga,
a few kilometres to the south, are also
unique and are definitely worth exploring.
But there is more; the Historic Village
of Piódão is nearby, as are the Aldeias
de Xisto (Schist Villages), starting with
those of the Lousã Uplands, a richly
varied landscape where stags bellow in
their natural habitat and various species
live together in the Parque Biológico
(Biological Park). Let inspiration be your
guide and explore the Castles and Town
Walls of Mondego, from Coimbra to
Lousã by way of Miranda do Corvo and
Montemor-o-Velho, Penela and Soure;
then there is the watchtower in Buarcos
and the neighbouring Pombal Castle, each
promising an array of fascinating details.
In Coimbra itself, the district capital, you
can take a closer look at the science and
botanical museums, the Miguel Torga
House Museum and various gardens.
One of these is Quinta das Lágrimas,
where the fountains of Love and Tears

perpetuated the legendary love of
noblewoman Inês de Castro and Prince
Pedro. Be sure to take a look at the
programme of the Gil Vicente Academic
Theatre, and delight both young and old
with a visit to Portugal dos Pequenitos,
were the former Portuguese colonies and
examples of typical architecture from
up and down the country have been
recreated in miniature.
With just a little luck, you may come
across someone singing a Coimbra fado
song in the old town, the city centre or
near the university. Or perhaps you will
spot a tuna, which is the name given to
the black-caped student music groups
who liven up the streets with their
performances. And if you happen to
be visiting the city in May, you will find
yourself in the very midst of the student
tradition known as Queima das Fitas
(“burning the ribbons”).

Aldeia Histórica do Piódão e as Aldeias
de Xisto, a começar pelas da serra
da Lousã, riqueza paisagística onde
bramam veados no seu habitat natural
e espécies coexistem no Parque
Biológico. E aproveite-se a inspiração
para percorrer a Rota dos Castelos e
Muralhas do Mondego, do de Coimbra
ao da Lousã, passando pelo de Miranda
do Corvo e o de Montemor-o-Velho,
do de Penela ao de Soure, a atalaia
de Buarcos e o vizinho castelo de
Pombal, cada um garante pormenores
peculiares de atenção merecida.
Noutro pulo de volta à capital de
distrito, dê-se olhar atento aos
museus da Ciência e Botânico, à Casa
Museu Miguel Torga, aos diversos
jardins, como o da Quinta das Lágrimas
onde as fontes dos Amores e das
Lágrimas perpetuam o lendário amor
de D. Pedro e D. Inês de Castro.
Espreite-se ainda a agenda do Teatro
Académico de Gil Vicente e faça-
se a delícia de miúdos e graúdos
no Portugal dos Pequenitos, onde
ex-colónias e as mais diversas
arquiteturas país fora estão
exemplarmente mini representadas.
Com sorte (e não será precisa
muita), num virar de esquina da zona
histórica, no centro ou para os lados
da universidade, entoa-se um fado
de Coimbra ou uma tuna académica
com estudantes de capa negra anima
uma rua. Vozes que ficam ao rubro na

In central Portugal, in the pretty seaside city of
Figueira da Foz, known as Praia da Claridade (“Clarity

been renovated and now combines history and

All the rooms are decorated in line with the floor they
are situated on and feature contemporary furniture,
free Wi-Fi, LCD television, double-glazed windows,
air conditioning, one double or two twin beds (an
extra bed may be available on request), minibar, safe,
telephone line and private bathroom. The top floor
rooms feature balconies affording splendid views
over the seaside city.

When the topic of conversation is
diversity, the Ria de Aveiro region
deserves attention, with its vast natural,
architectural, biological and historical
heritage, spanning the centuries from past
to present.
Formed around five centuries ago, the
waters of the Ria, which is also the
mouth of the River Vouga, have spread
out into a multitude of channels dotted
with islands and islets. And there are
also many protected areas and species
here, marshlands and cane areas, unique
museums that are well worth visiting, and
a thousand routes waiting to welcome
walkers. The slogan could not be more apt:
“Ria de Aveiro, a sea of experiences!”
From fishing to farming, from salt
production to canning, from the colourful
striped houses of the Costa Nova to
the boat trips aboard the traditional
“moliceiro” boats and activities in the
heart of nature, this sea of experiences
bounded by the coast (where the country’s
biggest lighthouse awaits you) promises
an abundance of memories: rare birds,
water sports, rambles, tours and cultural
delights.
Before setting off, recharge your batteries
with the best that the land, sea and river
have to offer. Try the Marinhoa beef,
Bairrada suckling pig, the dishes with
lamprey and traditionally-cured salt cod
(bacalhau) from Ílhavo, the eel stew,
bivalves and a seemingly endless list of
fish, as well as microalgae, glasswort and
Portuguese crowberry. There are also
plenty of sweet treats on offer to suit
every taste: cavacas (a type of iced bun)
and Easter loaf from Vale de Ílhavo will
titillate your taste buds. And then you
have sweet egg cream (ovos moles) from
Aveiro, pão-de-ló (a very light sponge cake)
from Ovar, sweet pasties from Águeda,
barquinhas (“little boats”) from Vouga, and
amores (“loves”) from Sever. But no meal
here would be complete without the still

and sparkling wines of Bairrada.
In the meantime, you could start your tour
with the Bairrada Wine Museum in Anadia
and explore the wine route, vineyards and
wineries. And then turn your attention
to other landscapes, including: Pateira de
Fermentelos, one of the biggest natural
lakes in the Iberian Peninsula; the saltpans
at Marinha Santiago da Fermentelos and
the Lagoa do Paraíso (“Paradise Lake”)
where you can see black-winged stilts,
herons, flamingos and many other bird
species depending on the time of year;
the Dunas de São Jacinto Nature Reserve,
which serves to protect wild animals and
plants; the Buçaquinho Environmental
Park and its vast protected area; the
Bioria Special Protection Area for birds
in Estarreja; the Ilha dos Puxadoiros and
the dozens of jetties at the turn of every
channel; the Canal de Mira and the River
Boco; and the storks at Pateira de Frossos,
an area of old rice paddies.

Antes de se fazer ao caminho,
reforce‑se energias com o melhor que
a terra, o mar e o rio oferecem, como a
Carne Marinhoa, o leitão da Bairrada,
os pratos de lampreia e com Bacalhau
de Cura Tradicional de Ílhavo, a
caldeirada de enguias, bivalves e peixes
sem conta, e ainda as macroalgas,
a salicórnia e as camarinhas. Em
matéria de doces, entre tantas
opções, as cavacas e o folar do Vale
de Ílhavo despertam os sentidos, e
os ovos‑moles de Aveiro, o pão‑de‑ló
de Ovar, os pastéis de Águeda, as
barquinhas do Vouga e os amores de
Sever enchem as medidas de muitos.
À mesa não podem faltar os vinhos e
os espumantes da Bairrada.
Entretanto, comece‑se passeio pelo
Museu do Vinho da Bairrada em Anadia

Viseu’s history dates back for more than
2,500 years and there are more than
2,500 reasons for visiting the region. From
the palaces and stately homes to the
pillories and crosses, from the bridges and
towers to the convents and monasteries,
and from the uplands and parks to the
rivers and beaches, a journey through this
region is an experience that will satisfy all
ages and all interests.
A stroll through the city of Viseu’s
historical centre will bring you into contact
with various eras and styles, starting with
the Rua Direita. Lined with manor houses,
Manueline windows and shops, this
half-kilometre-long street connects two
of the city’s seven entrances. Meanwhile,
underneath glass panels on Rua Formosa,
you will find one of the most emblematic
vestiges of the Roman presence in the
area: a fragment of the impressive wall
that once surrounded Viseu. Devote some
time, too, to the Praça da República, the
Casa do Miradouro, the Porta de Soar,
the Manueline window of the old Paço
da Torre and the churches of Carmo and
the Third Order of Saint Francis. Wander
through the Fontelo and Aquilino Ribeiro
parks, a veritable breath of fresh air in
the city. And, in the evening, enjoy a
performance at the Viriato Theatre.
Take time to spend some leisurely hours
enjoying the Cathedral Square, where
you will find not only the cathedral but
also the Grão Vasco Museum and the
Misericórdia Church (Church of Mercy).
This is one of the highest points in the
city and one way to get there is the
funicular, which departs from the famous
São Mateus Fairground. From here, you
can also stroll through the park known

as the Parque Linear do Rio Pavia, which
takes you alongside the river all the way
to the Cava do Viriato Fort. Here you will
find a monument to the warrior who
fought against the invading Romans
and whose name is remembered in the
famous viriato cake.
But the viriato is not the only cake that
will leave sweet memories of your trip...
try the pastéis de feijão (sweet bean
tartlets) from Mangualde and Vouzela,
the sweet egg cream from Viseu and the
queijadinhas from Oliveira de Frades.
And while we are on the subject of food,
there are several main courses that every
visitor should sample: Vitela de Lafões
(veal), Rancho à Moda de Viseu (chickpea
and meat stew), Carolos à Beirão (coarse
maize porridge) and Cabrito (kid) from
Gralheira and from Caramulo, all washed
down with one of the splendid wines from
the Dão Demarcated Region.
Viseu tem mais de 2500 anos de
história e mais de 2500 razões para
a visitar. Dos palácios e solares aos
pelourinhos e cruzeiros, das pontes e
torres aos conventos e mosteiros, das
serras e parques aos rios e suas praias,
viajar pela sua região é uma experiência
para todos os interesses e idades.
Passear pelo centro histórico da cidade
é ter contacto com várias épocas e
estilos, a começar pela Rua Direita que
liga duas das sete portas da cidade em
meio quilómetro de casas senhoriais,

janelas manuelinas e lojas. Por seu
lado, é na Rua Formosa que está um
dos mais emblemáticos vestígios
da presença romana por aqui, sob
um vidro vê-se um fragmento da
imponente muralha que circundava
Viseu. Dedique ainda tempo à Praça
da República, à Casa do Miradouro,
à Porta de Soar, à janela manuelina
do antigo Paço da Torre e às igrejas
do Carmo e da Ordem Terceira de S.
Francisco. Perca-se nos parques do
Fontelo e Aquilino Ribeiro, autênticos
pulmões da cidade. E, ao final do dia,
encante-se com as peças do Teatro
Viriato.
Com tempo e vagar, pasme com o Adro
da Sé, onde convivem a Sé Catedral,
o Museu Grão Vasco e a Igreja da
Misericórdia. Fica num dos pontos mais
elevados de Viseu, ao qual é também
possível chegar no funicular que parte
do recinto da famosa Feira de São
Mateus, onde se pode aproveitar
o Parque Linear do Rio Pavia para
passeios à beira rio até à Cava do
Viriato, uma fortaleza onde erigiram
um monumento ao guerreiro que
combateu os invasores romanos, e deu
nome ao famoso bolo viriato.
E se o viriato adoça as memórias desta
viagem, também não fique indiferente
aos pastéis de feijão de Mangualde
e aos de Vouzela, aos doces de ovos
de Viseu e às queijadinhas de Oliveira
de Frades. Já no campo dos pratos
principais, a Vitela de Lafões, o Rancho
à Moda de Viseu, os Carolos à Beirão
e o Cabrito da Gralheira e do Caramulo
são incontornáveis, como o são os
vinhos da Região Demarcada do Dão.

With your batteries recharged, it’s time
for some more exploring. The Beira Alta
region is a treasure trove of natural and
architectural heritage so head off to the
Ecopista do Dão, a cycle and walking route
that takes you along 49 kilometres of a
former railway line between Santa Comba
Dão and Viseu. The views are magnificent
and so too are the uplands in the area:
Caramulo, from where you can see the
sea, Montemuro where wolves still live,
and Arada, between the Paiva and Vouga
rivers, to name but a few. The Carregal
do Sal archaeological circuit is another
must-do, taking in the megalithic site at
Felgueiras, the megalithic necropolis at
Pedralta and many other dolmens and
cromlechs.
In fact, there is no end to the unmissable
sites on this breathtaking itinerary: the
castles of Lamego and Penedono, Lamego
Cathedral, the Cistercian Monastery, the
Casa da Lavoura/Oficina do Linho Linen
Museum and Workshop, the Caramulo
and Quartz Museums, the Chapel of Our

stately home of the Counts of Santar, and
so much more!
When you have finished touring around,
recharge your batteries at one of the
region’s various spas, which use some
of nature’s most beneficial gifts in their

In the civil parish of Alcafache, on the banks of
the River Dão, there is a thermal resort, called
Termas de Alcafache, with warm sulphurous
water with a low mineral content.
The Fagilde Dam, built right on the River Dão, has
created a vast reservoir of fresh water that is used
to water the land and transforms the scenery, to
the delight of bathers and fishermen alike.
At the southern boundary of the municipality,
we encounter some magnificent scenery as the
River Mondego flows onwards to the sea.
MANGUALDE’S MAN-MADE BEACH
LiveBeach was Europe’s first man-made beach
and it transformed Mangualde into a veritable
summertime city resort.

It’s hard to resist the local cuisine, including
dishes such as rojões à moda de mangualde
(pork), arroz de entrecosto em vinha d’alhos (rice
with ribs) and cabrito assado em forno de lenha

The Misericórdia Museum is part
of the plural dimension of the
Sisterhood, since its mission is not
limited to the social assistance
that it has been providing for five
centuries.
The “Misericórdia’s Treasure”
tells the story of this noteworthy
institution, which has always
been inserted in the community
and promoting, in each era, local
development as well as the
talent of painters, sculptors and
architects which are represented in
the museum’s galleries.
The eighteenth-century building,
classed as a monument of public
interest, is an impressive sight at
the Adro da Sé (the area around the
cathedral); its silhouette is sculpted
in the style of the Baroque period,
as can be seen from the decoration
of its façade. In addition to being
a place of worship the church was
once used to house social support
services, and the memory has been
preserved as heritage.
The visitor is invited to go through
the ten rooms of history and sacred
art, feeling the aroma of the old
pharmacy, the sculptural staging of
Christian iconography, the sonority
of Gregorian chant, the splendour

 Located in the heart of the city of
Viseu, the Forum Viseu shopping
centre is one of the region’s

O CORTIÇO Restaurant has been in business for more

than fifty years. Founders Zeferino and Mimi wanted to
serve dishes that were as traditional as they possibly
could be, so they sat around the fireplaces with the
villagers and recreated the most representative old
recipes from the Beira Alta region for our menu.
Dishes such as the “rotten codfish rotted in the cellar”,
which is pre-fried and marinated, the “beans prepared
à la Abbott’s maid”, “chunks of pork with blood sausage
made the way they do it in the villages”, “carqueja
rice” (dish flavoured with the herb Baccharis trimera)
or the “hearty veal casserole à la Cavernães farmer”
and many more. All are dishes filled with history and
tradition.
And, in fact, a long HISTORY is being rewritten daily by
those who visit us.
The highest praise anyone can give us is to remember
the taste of dishes that they tried here years ago and
which remain the same to this day.
Our day-to-day life is made up of simple things and the

O Restaurante O CORTIÇO nasceu há mais de cin-

quenta anos. Por vontade dos seus fundadores –
Dom Zeferino e Dona Mimi –, foi à volta das lareiras
da aldeia que se recriaram as receitas antigas mais
representativas desta região da Beira Alta e que
passaram a fazer parte da nossa ementa.
Pratos como o bacalhau podre apodrecido na
Adega, feijocas à maneira da criada do Sr Abade,
rojões com morcela como fazem nas aldeias, arroz
de carqueja, ou a vitelinha na púcara à lavrador de
Cavernães, entre outros, são pratos carregados de
tradição e de muita história ...
Aliás, há uma longa HISTÓRIA que vem sendo rees-
crita diariamente por quem nos visita.
O melhor elogio que nos podem fazer é recordarem
o sabor dos pratos há longos anos e que o mesmo
se mantém.
É um dia a dia feito de coisas simples e o ESTATUTO
que nos conferem, advém diretamente de quantos
nos visitam e que nos deixam os seus testemu-
nhos.
Mais não fazemos que retribuir com simpatia, res-
peito e muita dedicação.

It was 1978 when brothers Vasco da Trindade and

Jorge Lopes Ferreira decided to open a restaurant in the
city of Viseu.
And they were determined: they were going to collect
some local recipes and create a new way of offering
good service. They came up with an all-new serving
style in Viseu, which came to earn the essential
approval of critics, visitors and locals.
Today, Santa Luzia is a fully established restaurant
in Viseu. Its regional-based cuisine is a benchmark
for those who appreciate good cooking and the art
of graceful and attentive service. For many years, the
kitchen has been run by the wives of the two founding
brothers.
Recently, however, the team acquired two new
members: Jorge Ferreira, the son of founder Jorge Lopes
Ferreira, and Idilio Martins, Vasco Trindade’s brother-
in-law. The dining experience offered by the Santa Luzia
Restaurant has long charmed food lovers.
The Santa Luzia Restaurant, which now has new
facilities, is in an easily accessible location. It’s a
simple and comfortable venue that offers high-quality

Corria o ano de 1978 quando os irmãos Vasco da

Trindade e Jorge Lopes Ferreira decidiram abrir um
restaurante na cidade de Viseu.
E estavam decididos: recolher algumas receitas
locais e criar uma nova forma de oferecer bons ser-
viços. Criaram um novo estilo de servir em Viseu,
que passou a merecer vénia obrigatória de especia-
listas, visitantes e população local.
O restaurante Santa Luzia é hoje uma institui-
ção de Viseu. A sua cozinha, de orientação regio-
nal, é uma referência para os que apreciam a boa
mesa e a arte de servir com elegância e cuidado.
Na cozinha quem “capitaneia” há longos anos
são as esposas dos dois irmãos fundadores.

Taberna da Milinha opened for business in 2013.
Initially located in the historical part of Viseu, the
restaurant moved to a different area of the city
in August 2017 when owners Diogo Pereira and
Sónia Rebelo decided they wanted bigger premises.,
although
the concept of “petiscos” (nibbles) remained.
Our nibbles menu includes mushrooms au gratin with
Serra da Estrela cheese, regional cheese and drycured
sausage boards, alheira sausage crisp, and ribs
marinated in wine and garlic, to name but a few. All of
our nibbles can be savoured with wines from the Dão
demarcated wine region.

This cosy little restaurant opened for business in July
2005. The idea belonged to António Augusto, better
known as “Tito”, who had worked in catering from a
very young age; and it was put into practice by his wife,
Maria Arminda, who inherited her gift for cooking from
her grandmother.
As the restaurant approaches its thirteenth
anniversary, it is a source of great pride that it is held in
such high esteem by its customers.
Today, the team is made up of Rita, the owners’
daughter, and two other staff members who help
maintain the welcoming family atmosphere.
Diners coming here can enjoy regional cuisine, with the
“runny” rice dishes being a speciality. Examples include
the ribs marinated in wine and garlic, the cockerel with
rice cooked in blood (which won the “best rice dish in the
municipality of Viseu” prize in 2012), monkfish rice and,
in season, rice with yellow knight mushrooms.
Other options include “worker’s pasta”, cow’s trotters
with chickpeas, broad bean and meat stew and roast
kid, among others.
Open from Monday to Saturday for lunch and dinner.

Neste espaço podemos encontrar uma cozinha
regional com o seu forte nos arrozes a correr,
nomeadamente, as costelas em vinha d’alhos, o
galo de cabidela (premiado em 2012 com o “melhor

The Oeste (Portuguese for “west”)
region lives up to the description “land of
vineyards and sea”, but it is also a place
of castles and aqueducts, beaches and
mills, spas and golf courses, and a vast
heritage. A land that preserves its history
and promotes its modernity.
Going from south to north, start your
visit with Arruda dos Vinhos, Sobral de
Monte Agraço and Alenquer, with its
castle; the Wine and Mill Routes are well
worth doing, as is a visit to the Wine
Centre and Museum.
A longer stop is advisable when you
reach the Torres Vedras area, since
there is so much to see and do here: 20
kilometres of beaches and the spa at
Vimeiro; the protected landscape of the
Socorro and Archeira uplands, which are
excellent for birdwatching and where you
may also spot foxes, hedgehogs, badgers
and various species of butterflies; the
Atlantic, Light and Wind Routes; the
castle and the fortifications known as the
Lines of Torres Vedras; the Cucos thermal
spa complex; and the city itself, famous
for its Carnival festivities and sweet bean
pasties.
Meanwhile, at the top of the Montejunto
Hill in the municipality of Cadaval, you
will encounter the ruins of the first
Dominican convent in Portugal, close to
the Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Neves
(Our Lady of the Snows) and the Real
Fábrica do Gelo (Royal Ice Factory). For
caving aficionados, there are some great
caves and sinkholes in the area.
As you head towards Lourinhã, there
are many more unmissable places: the
Paimogo Fort, standing atop the cliffs
on the beach of the same name; Areia
Branca (“White Sand”) Beach; and the
famous Lourinhã Museum, better known
as the Jurassic Museum. And when you
reach the Bombarral area, focus your
attention on the Buddha Eden Garden,

wine tourism and the region’s producers.
But if you don’t want to miss even
the tiniest bit of this region, where the
landscape is dotted with whitewashed
houses, make your way to Peniche. Here
you will find the fortress, magnificent
surfing beaches and the Bobbin Lace
Museum, as well as sampling a tasty fish
stew or a fish so fresh it practically leaps
on to your plate. And you can take a boat
across to the Berlengas Island, a unique
nature reserve.
As you continue northwards, you cannot
fail to be impressed by the mediaeval
charms of Óbidos, the castle and the
Sanctuary of Senhor da Pedra (Lord of
the Stone), and the Eburobrittium Roman
ruins. Meanwhile, if you are looking for
some active pursuits, the Óbidos Lake
offers opportunities for walks and water
sports. Right there you have the Foz do
Arelho Beach on one side and the best
golf course on the other!
A região Oeste faz jus ao mote “terra
de vinhedos e de mar”, mas é também
cenário de castelos e aquedutos,
