Future Careers
One thing that we all know growing up is
that our future is something that is always
ahead of us. We make different plans for it
as we grow older and they change with every
passing year. That might slow down once
you’re in High School or it might not, either
way you’ll get there eventually. The
following are some future careers that some
students from our graduating class of 2019
are going into once they leave the halls of
our high school.
Morgan Cloke
“Well, my immediate plan is to go to North
Idaho College (NIC) and study pre-medical
sciences for four years. Then I will go to
medical school to study and become a
pediatric doctor. Otherwise known as a “
Kid” doctor. I will work with children and
help keep them healthy. I have a lot of
schooling left to go through but hopefully
ten years from now I will be Dr. Morgan
Cloke M.D.”
Aurora Wilde
“I will go on my mission. I don’t know
where I might be sent to but I hope I will be
sent to a place where I can learn more about
myself.
I am considering going to a trade school or
go to college once I am done with my
mission. I am not sure yet, but a future holds
many types of possibilities.

If I were to go to a college I would want to

become a video game character designer. I
want to draw art and write all together. I
might not get it, but it’s alright.
Instead I might get all sort of different jobs
and find out that the best job is something
that is out there in the world. For my
mission I want to explore and see the world
and find that place in my heart to call home
which is here. There is no better place to call
home than Haines, Alaska.”

“At the moment my goal is to attend the
University of Alaska Fairbanks in the Fall.
There I will be pursuing a Bachelor’s degree
in English. After that I will then be moving
on to pursue a Master’s degree in education
and getting my teaching certificate. When
that is all done I will be a certified Secondary
English Language Arts teacher. I plan on
staying in the state and teaching. But as
most people know, plans might not go
exactly as planned. Either way, no matter
where I am, I am incredibly excited to
finally be on the path to pursue this career.”

Smith at Harriett Hall, for a report on the
reunion of the Class of 2019! How is it going
over there Skyler?”
“Well John, the scene here is one of fond
memories and pleasant surprises as the
members of the class of 19’ gather together
at the exclusive Harriett Hall. Yes, it was
twenty years ago that people gathered
together tonight and graduated from
Haines High School. We’ll give a brief
history of a few of the class members and
find out what’s become of them in the last
twenty years.”

The Senior Class in the name of fun sat
down and wrote an item of writing called a
faux future. This little piece of writing is
purely meant for the amusement of the
reader. So please enjoy!
Kanahele, who has become a very well
renowned geneticist who has been working
on creating the next era of dinosaurs. How
is that going for you Mr. Kanahele?”
“Well Skyler, It’s going great! My team and
I are 30% of the way to creating our first
dinosaur. Once we get there we will be able

to start working on other species. I’m seeing
at least 10 species created by 2050.”
“That’s truly great Mr. Kanahele, we look
forward to seeing your steps forward with
this project.”
“Me too.”
“Well now, over there by the bar is Max
White. If you haven’t watched her latest
movie The First Steps then you haven’t seen
anything at all. She has spent her time since
graduation building her reputation in
acting by starring in many horror, comedy,
and action films. She has been living on the
coast of California in a million dollar
mansion for the past five years. Way to go
Max!”
“Now here is a man that you will definitely
want to meet. Corbin Holm. He has just
created the next big tech. Kicking Apple out
of the running for the largest multi-billion
corporation. He is currently working with
the homeless of San Francisco and going
undercover to provide supplies to these
people. Keep up the great work Mr. Holm.”
“Aurora Wilde is currently entertaining
Morgan Cloke next to the lounge area.
Word has it that Ms. Wilde has created the
next big Virtual Reality tech and is working
on incorporating it into schools special
education programs all over the world. Ms.
Cloke, on the other hand, is now the head
pediatric doctor of the Harborview Hospital
in Seattle, Washington. She is currently
taking a year off to try her hand at
campaigning as the first female president of
the United States. Great job gals!”
“Now over on the lawn chatting are Trever
Olsson and Ivan Hotch. Mr. Olsson is a high
ranking general in the army and planning
on retiring in the next few years. Mr. Hotch,
on the other hand, has created a new brand
of trucks that are a worthy competition for
Ford. Next time you consider buying a new
vehicle hit Mr. Hotch up. He’ll give you a
smoking deal.”
“Now looking over at the bar once again,
you will find Patrick Cunningham. After
moving to California to attend college for
Marine Biology he took up surfing. He is
now a well-known surfboard designer that
lives in a villa in Hawaii with his wife
Kiana.”
“Now on to Elena Saunders over by the
refreshment table, a professor of Mythology
and Literature at Cambridge. She has come
back to Alaska for a brief visit with family
and friends and will be returning to
Cambridge to continue working on her
novel discussing female authors throughout
the ages.”
Senior Biography’s
Aurora Wilde
I have been in this school for a very long
time. I remember as a child this high
school was huge and like a maze that never
ended. I remember growing up in a
different school back in the day before

there was a hotel named Aspen. There was
a little red school, and before the Brewery
even was built there was a blue and white
building. I went to school in each one. I
went through kindergarten twice. One year
in each of those buildings, and I started
first grade here at the new school. At the
end of my second year of kindergarten I
remember seeing the insides of this new
school and how scary it was to not know
anything about the school and not
knowing if I would have to change.
The high school was not the same after
that. But as time goes on you tend to miss
the good old days. This school means a lot
to me. It felt like yesterday I was in
elementary school looking outside waiting
for the day to graduate high school and
pursue my dreams.
Time goes faster when you are having fun.
I have made wonderful friends over the
years. At first friends didn’t come to me, I
came to them. I try to help those that are
hurt. I want to make a difference and be
there for those whom I care about. I know
that someday I will become who I am, and
that I will find my place in the world.
A future awaits us all. Make new friends,
start new memories and one day we will
see each other again.
Morgan Cloke
I have gone to two different schools. Haines
High School (obviously) and then Asotin
Elementary/Middle school. I grew up in
Asotin, WA and that's where I went to
school up until March 2015, when I moved
here to a Haines.
In Asotin I played lots of volleyball, was on
the cheer team and I loved my band class!
Once I got into middle school, I was one of
the youngest students asked to join the high
school Jazz Band. I loved it! I was also a part
of the high school marching band, that was
one of the most fun things I have ever done!
Music was my life... I was pretty into my
school work. I have always loved to learn, I
like to feel smart. But no matter what I was
always focused on my music. Outside of all
that I was involved in the cheer squad and
the volleyball team. However, nothing
occupied more of my time than the music
program did.
Then, the second semester of eighth grade
year I moved here to Haines. At first, I was
really upset to leave everything I loved
behind in Asotin. I thought I would never
have fun again. (sounds silly, huh?) Well,
once I got here everyone was so inviting and
welcoming. It was amazing! Things were
different, that’s for sure. I don’t remember
much of those last few months of eighth
grade. However, I do remember freshman
year. I was so ready to be involved. I ran for
class president, and I participated in
volleyball and cheer. It was so nice to have
so much to do. Aspects of my life really
changed, instead of being super wrapped up
in music, I started to really enjoy sports and
my academics more. I even discovered my
love for the sciences! Now, science is my
favorite subject, volleyball is my favorite

thing to do, and I love being a part of
student government!
To me school isn’t just a place full of
information, it’s a place to grow as a person.
Throughout my school career I have
changed my interests many times, but now
that I am a senior I know what I like and that
I want to continue learning.
School isn’t easy, it takes a lot of hard
work. School also offers a lot of new
opportunities. Sometimes it can be really
difficult to be involved or to stay caught up
with school. I know I struggled a lot when I
had to transfer schools, but it allowed me to
really learn who I wanted to be. If there is
one piece of advice I can leave for you, it
would be: explore your options, take
opportunities, and stay focused on your
school work. It will all pay off in the end, I
see that now.
Skyler Smith
I was homeschooled for most of my
elementary and middle school career. After
starting high school I was able to explore my
likes and dislikes. I found that I was more
into academic activities rather than athletic
ones and so I started participating in
Student Government, I was elected class
secretary my sophomore year after a spur of
the moment decision and I have served
every year since as either Secretary or
Treasurer. My sophomore year I was also
inducted into the NHS (National Honor
Society), I served my first year in chapter as
Secretary and my second year as President.
It was an honor to serve and I absolutely
loved every moment of it. In my off time
from school and volunteering I really like
just sitting down with a good book, playing
with my two adorable dogs, hiking, or
hanging out with my family.
If there is one thing I have learned in my
time here it is that our school works really
well together as a student body. This has
always been something I appreciated and
enjoyed about our school. It has been a great
4 years and I am very excited about my
future, but at the same time, I will miss a lot
of things. I have formed a lot of
relationships not only with other students
but with my teachers as well. I hope students
know that the teachers are always there for
you and will always listen. I wouldn’t have
been able to get through many rough
patches if they didn’t.
School is a place for students to grow both
academically and mentally. It’s a place for
you to prepare yourself for the next steps in
life. So take chances, participate in sports
you don’t think you will like just to see if you
do, make new friends whenever you can,
participate in school outings, you’ll never
know what lessons you might learn from
them, and lastly enjoy your classes. You will
learn a lot from them, especially if you pay
attention and study hard. At first it might be
difficult, but I promise it will be worth it
when you reach the end of the line. And
lastly enjoy every single minute of it, you
only go through high school once.

An Adventure of a Conference
Skyler Smith
Haines delegates represented our school
well at the Spring AASG conference in
Bethel this year. Only four students
attended but they not only got noted in the
conference minutes 5 times but also
brought two resolutions to the floor that
were passed unanimously. Marirose
Evenden brought a resolution asking for the
State of Alaska to prioritize keeping the
ferry system running. While presenting this
resolution, she had a delegate from every
community serviced by the ferry system
stand behind her in support of the
resolution. This resolution was passed
unanimously and it also won the Resolution
of the Conference for the sheer amount of
support from the Southeast communities.
Skyler Smith brought back her resolution to
require schools to have table saws with
SawStop technology in their woodshops.
After facing opposition at the Skagway
conference, the resolution passed
unanimously. Her resolution later won her
the award of Delegate of the Region.
Dylan Chapell did a great job as the Region
5 Representative. He ran meetings smoothly
and efficiently and made sure everybody's
voice was heard.
While in Bethel, students got to explore
Bethel with a town-wide photo scavenger
hunt. They also got to take part in some fun
classes such as Yoga, River walking, Improv,
Grass Weaving, etc.
Dori Getchell got to experience her first
AASG and also discuss some pretty
interesting resolutions. One such resolution
asked that cryptocurrency become a
commonly used currency in
Alaska. Another resolution asked for
seniors to be able to decorate their caps

when graduating. Haines delegates also got
to hear speeches from two keynote speakers,
one being Lisa Murkowski who had flown
up to Bethel especially for the AASG
conference, she talked about the importance
of student voice and leadership. The other
key note speaker was Nick Hanson an
American Ninja Warrior from Unalakleet
who discussed the struggles Alaskans face,
especially ones from rural villages. He
touched on the struggle with suicide and
alcoholism in our state as well.
All in all, it was a great conference for our
Haines delegates this year. The juniors of
the group are all looking forward to
returning to the Fall conference in Palmer.

Arts Rewind!
Hannah Boron
As the title suggests, this article is dedicated
to the artists in our school, from singers and
musicians to painters and blacksmiths,
Haines High is home to some of the best
artists out there!
Haines hosted Art Fest this year and offered
a multitude of unique classes for students to
choose from. Some quilted with Mrs.
Andriesen while others carefully carved and
painted longboards. These courses ran from
nine in the morning to nine at night for
several days. Needless to mention, many
hands were cramping towards the end, but
all the art displayed proved it was worth it.
Watercolor pieces, ceramics, carvings,
photographs and more were all shown with
beautiful extravagance. To top it all off,
almost all Haines participants received
either a ‘Best of Class’ or ‘Honorable
Mention’ award for their work. Ms. Danner
has truly molded some incredible artists!
In more recent times, the Man Choir and
the Treble Choir both traveled to
Anchorage to participate in the Solo and
Ensemble Music Festival. Only those who
received a superior ranking at their regional
Music Fests could participate in this event,
and Haines qualified for six different pieces!
Lydia Andriesen and Brennan Palmieri
each sung a solo and also received a
command performance for their duet
together. The Man Choir received a
command performance for the piece Manly
Men, which rocked the house with a
standing ovation… before they even
finished. Thanks to Mr. Davis, Haines was
better represented than it had been for a
long while. Each musician worked tirelessly
on their own time to improve, and boy did
it show!
In conclusion, it is safe to say that our high
school houses some true talent. With the
masterful skill of Ms. Danner and the
musical intuition of Mr. Davis, the arts have
thrived in our school and will continue to
do so as the year comes to an end. If you see
either of these wonderful teachers give them

Nathan Haas

Becoming a teacher is not an easy task. You

have to decide to put in time and resources
toward gaining the knowledge needed to
teach others, and after that, you will most
likely spend many late nights trying to give
students the time and attention that they
deserve. That's why we should take some
time to appreciate a few teachers that we feel
go above and beyond, not just teaching their
students, but really trying to make a
difference and connecting with them. The
two teachers that the Haines student body
has chosen for our teacher appreciation are Prom Royalty
Lilly Boron and Jason Eson.
