I’ve now been doing sponsored challenges for around seven years. It all started when I heard that a friend of
mine from school had been diagnosed with cancer. I just couldn’t believe it! How could a healthy twenty-six
year old suddenly face death? I guess Liam wasn’t just a school friend. Although he was a year older than
me, he was my best friend for the six years we studied together and I felt that I should do something to help
him. One evening I was sitting with my sister and her husband and we were talking about Liam. Suddenly
my brother-in-law looked at me and said, ‘Why don’t we raise some money for him?’ We spent the next two
hours discussing what we could do and that’s when we came up with the idea of doing a long distance
triathlon (swimming, cycling and rowing). Of course, there were some major obstacles to this, the first being
that I wasn’t the fittest person in the world. But, after six weeks training in the gym I was ready for what
would be the toughest challenge of my life. We started by swimming across the English Channel, all twenty-
two miles of it. Then we cycled from Calais to Paris before finally running across Paris to the Eiffel Tower.
We managed to raise more than £50,000 so we were really pleased. When we got back home we began to
plan our next challenge, cycling across Australia. Since then, we’ve done five challenges together and
raised almost £1 million.
