Dear Parishioners,
As we listen to the Acts of the Apostles
readings, we see there is a lot of activity.
Paul and Banabas are in Antioch. There is
much opposition to them by ‘troublemakers’
who turn the ordinary people against Paul
and Barnabas. So much so, that they leave
Antioch. We saw “they shook the dust from
their feet in defiance and went off to
Iconium. They preached in that area for a
good length of time.
Today we take up the story of them
going back to Antioch. Paul and Barnabas
were not going to be put off preaching by
any opposition. “They put fresh heart into
the disciples, encouraging them to
persevere in the faith”. Paul went on to say,
“we all have to experience many hardships
before we enter the kingdom of God”.
And then: “In each of these churches
they appointed elders and with prayer and
fasting, they commended them to the Lord
in whom they had come to believe”. So the
elders were appointed to continue what
Paul and Barnabas had begun. Who were
those elders? Where did they come from?
What was their training? What was those
task in each of the churches? Were they
deacons? Were they priests? Were they lay
leaders? When did they disappear?
There are a lot of questions there!
Why am I asking? I’ve always believed and
believe even more now, that this is an area
we need to stude more as a church. This
week, I’ve been re-reading scripture
commentaries going into the background of
the Acts of the Apostles and looking at the
emerging early church. I could only find a
few lines, if any on the ministry of the elders
as arranged by Paul. This whole ministry fe
ll by the wayside when all the ministry was
vested in one person, the Priest. The Second
Vatican Council tried to ‘unpack’ the
“priesthood of the laity” but that too has
fallen on hard soil! I believe we could do
well to learn from the early church in
Antioch.
Underpinning the understanding of
priesthood must be the Words of Jesus in
today’’s Gospel: “I shall not be with you much
longer. I give you a new commandment: love
one another just as I have loved you. By this …
everyone will know that you are my
disciples”.
Here is the supreme example given by
Jesus. We must act and love as he did. He
gave his life for us. We are called to do the
same.

PRIEST TRAINING FUND
Today’s second collection today will
support the Priest Training Fund. This
fund pays for the priestly formation of men
for the Catholic priesthood. There are
currently 45 men studying at Allen Hall
seminary, 27 of whom are for our own
Diocese, and last year eight men ordained to
the priesthood to serve as our future priests.
The fund also supports the ongoing
enrichment and formation of our ordained
priests. Your gift ensures we can provide
training for these men responding to
Christ’s call to dedicate their lives to serve
God’s people. Please be as generous as you
can. Please also pray for vocations and for
all our priests. If you do not have a donation
leaflet, plenty are still available at the back
of the church. You can donate online

EASTER CONCERT: “TIME TO RISE”
The Verbum Dei missionaries and friends
would like to invite everyone for an
afternoon of prayer through music and art
in an Easter concert today,
Sunday, 19th May at 2pm in St. John
Vianney church,
followed by light refreshment in the hall
afterwards. Suggested donation: £5/person.
All proceed of this fundraising event will
support young adults on an 8-day walking
pilgrimage (from Rome to Assisi) and
mission immersion experience with street
children in the Philippines.
Tickets will be available after Masses this
weekend.
