INTRODUCTION-
Modern business is large and complex catering to national and global markets. It
exercises a definite and extensive influence on our economic and Social life styles. As a
socio economic institution a company has to perform all tasks involved in the development
& delivery of desirable goods and
Services from production to consumption.
In today's world, society is expecting much more from business than in the past. A
new attitude towards the managerial role is slowly emerging. Business management must
consider the social and ethical implication of its decision. Corporate social responsibility is
seriously considering the impact of company's decisions and actions on environment and the
society. Social responsibility indicates personal responsibility and obligation of managers
and employees, as they act in heir own Interests, to ensure that rights and legitimate interests
of others are in no way sacrificed or prejudiced by their behavior and actions.
In today's competitive world, where every corporate leader is facing the dynamic
challenge of responsible business, corporate social responsibility has become the password
to not only overcome competition but to ensure sustainable growth. It has been supported
not only by the shareholders but stake-holders by and large encompassing the whole

IMPORTANCE/REQUIREMENT OF THIS PROJECT:-
OBJECTIVE:-
The OSL established in the year 1956 is the first public sector in the country to work
in the mining sector. OSL is the only leading public sector of Orissa state government to earn
profit consecutively for 8 years and contributing a large share of profit towards the society. It
has also taken up tremendous job towards its social obligation for the benefit of common
people living in the peripheral village of its mining areas. So OSL is the right place to
analyze every aspects of CSR related work and to frame out clear objectives for proper study.
a. To study about CSR work being implement by OSL from time to time.
Since OSL is a profit making organization and lot of social development work are
being taken up by the management from time to time, the researchers shall no doubt find
ample scope to derive a clear picture of the exiting status of CSR and to suggest appropriate
measures for effective implementation of CSR work.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
The whole study is based on information/data collected from both primary and
secondary sources. Besides, researcher being the joint secretary of OSL-Maitree has enough
credibility to assess the status of existing CSR Work.
a) Primary data refers to details of CSR work taken up in OSL during last five years,
funds allocated for the purpose, success result achievement, attitude of employees,
attitude of government, reaction of beneficiaries, involvement of elected
representatives, etc have been collected through structured schedules and.
questionnaires.
b) The sample: OSL being a vast organization with different units at various places,
types of developmental projects, people’s participation, and care has been taken to
select samples from all possible spheres of whole OSL including the corporate office
for preparation of schedules and collecting data from the client groups.
c) Questionnaire method has been adopted for collection of primary data. Other
secondary sources like office records of welfare section, OSL Maitree relating to
peripheral developmental work and CSR work, welfare matters and news letters,
reports and audited statement of accounts have been referred for collection of data for
a detailed study of existing CSR work of OSL.
The information collected from different client groups based on yes/no answers have
been systematically processed and analyzed manually on percentage basis to derive
the findings.
LIMITATION:-
INTRODUCTION TO INDUSTRY
OSL AT A GLANCE
Geologically two thirds of Orissa is covered with pre-Cambrian rocks which have
long been known to harbor many metallic and nonmetallic minerals including iron,
chromium, manganese, bauxite, tin, vanadium, titanium, dolomite, china clay, granite and
many more. The state has about 96% of chromites, 71% of bauxite, 38% of graphite, 33% of
iron ore, 32% of manganese, and 23% of coal resources of India.
OSLs impressive growth over the decades is hinged on its philosophy and
commitment towards quality and value addition. The corporation’s turnover has increased
manifold over the years through optimum utilization of resources, cost controlling measures,
computerized inventory management, energy audit asset up-gradation and implementation of
quality circles, progressive mechanization and modernization of mining operation with due
care for the environment have paid rich dividends.
The skilled manpower and scientific business process have been adding to the
corporation’s productivity. Reputed foreign firms and global mining giants like Rio Tinto of
UK and continental resources of USA have entered into joint ventures with OSL. With
Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and ISO 9001-2000 certificate, OSL is on the highway
to embrace global challenges and competition.
MINES
OSL has been steadily adding to the corporation's mineral inventory.
Today OSL possesses a reserve of 400 million tones of iron ore, 19 million tones of
manganese ore, 28 million tones of chromites, 220 million tones of bauxite, 19 million tones
of limestone and other minerals. OSL is acting as facilitating agent for development of
Bauxite properties.
OSL operates 11 are mines, five chrome ore mines, three manganese mines and one
limestone mine. Closed mines have been reopened and loss making mines have been turned
around. Some more iron, manganese, granite and china clay leases are being opened up for
mining.
South Kaliapani, Kalipani, Sukrangi and underground mines of Bangur make OSL
the leading chromites producer of the country producing high grade lumpy and friable
variety. OSL is operating three leases in Kalahandi district for semi precious stone
(ruby/corundum), one under sublease and the other on rising and sale contract.
Some impure limestone bands inside ump valley lease in Koraput district having no
industrial use are being used to produce slab and tiles as a replacement to marble. OSL also
owns few quarry leases for colored and black varieties of dimension stone in the state.
BENIFICATION PLANT:-
Designed to upgrade chrome ores of lower grade to chrome concentrates of saleable
grade, the 100% export oriented chrome ore beneficiation plant (COBP) at Kaliapani has
been substantially contributing to OSL exchequer with 100% capacity utilization. The plant
has recorded a production of 1 million tones chrome concentrate ,since commissioning in
1995.
EXPORTS:-
OSL continues to maintain Orissa's global through exports of minerals from Paradeep
port. In recognition of its superb export performance. OSL has bagged the CAP AXIL exploit
award every year in a row since 1998-99. With its foolproof export network, OSL is in a
position to handle district export of iron ore, chrome ore and chrome concentrates produced
from its chrome ore beneficiation plant.

LITERATURE REVIEW :
CSR can be discerned from three words contained within its title phrase-corporate,
social, responsibility. In broad term CSR covers the responsibilities to the societies within
which they are based and operate. The world business council for sustainable development in
its publication making good business sense by Lord Holme and Richard Watts, used the
definition-CSR is the continuing commitment by business to behave ethically and contribute
to economic development while improving the quality of life of the work force and their
families as well as of the local community and society at large.
CSR is a concept where by organizations consider the interest of society by taking
responsibility by the impact of their activities on customers, suppliers, employees,
shareholders, communities and other stakeholders as well as environment.
The term CSR itself came into common use in the early 1970s although it was seldom
abbreviated. The term stakeholder means those impacted by an organization’s activities was
used to describe corporate owners beyond shareholders from around 1989.
According to the concept, a company has responsibility to the society that extends
beyond making a profit. According to World Business Council for sustainable Development
CSR is the continuing commitment by business to have ethically and contribute to economic
development while improving the quality of life of the workforce and their families as well as
the local community and society at large.
CSR is the alignment of business operations with social values. It takes into account
the interests of stakeholders in the company’s business policies and actions.
A strategic decision taken by the Board of Directors of company can affect more than
just the company. E.g. if the board of directors takes a decision affects not only the workforce
but also the communities where the plants are located and customers who may have no other
source for the discontinued product. These situations raise questions of appropriateness of the
decisions with respect to mission, objectives and strategies. This requires managers to deal
with these conflicting interests in an ethical manner by formulating a visible strategy.
The social responsiveness implies actions and the how of the responses of
management. The current trend is in company’s involvement in social actions. The mission of
coopration expresses such involvement in social action to improve the quality of life. Any
enterprise must interact with, and live in, as a responsible citizen in the society. In an age of
fast changing and turbulent environment proaction on the pat of management is demanded to
meet the challenges faced by the society.
According to Carol, managers of business organizations have four responsibilities-
economic, legal, ethical and discretionary.
Economic responsibility :
It refers to production of goods and services, which are of values to society so that the
firm can repay its creditors and shareholders.
Legal responsibility :
It refers to the loss for example, in the Indian context, automatic workforce retrenchment at
the whims of the management is not allowed.
Ethical responsibilities :
It refers to the generally held beliefs about behavior in a society for example a
company should work with its employees and the community if it is planning for the layoffs,
though it may be required by the company to do so.
Discretionary responsibility :
1. Fair price, fair trade practices and fair quality of goods is the primary demands of
consumers.
2. Branding, packaging and labeling must offer adequate and reliable information and
guidance to consumers.
4. Service after sale is essential particularly in the sale of appliances and machinery.
6. Self regulation by business can ensure truthful advertising and sales promotion.
Consumer movement is critical and poses and great challenges for business
challenges to become more consumer-oriented and a challenge to do better.
3. Management will desist from corrupting public servants or the democratic process for
selfish ends.
Every corporate objective is to perform better, improve the economic condition and
get a better impression from the public for doing business in long run. That’s why according
to Henry Ford the purpose of corporation is to as much as you can, everywhere for everybody
concerned and incidentally to make money. With the objective of implementing social
welfare, we have to follow some principles and makes some strategies.
Benefits of CSR :
Reduced costs.
Customer satisfaction.
Favourable position.
Competitive mileage.
Environment sustainability.
Reduced consumption of energy, water and other natural resources and emission of
hazardous substances.
Establish policies to ensure the health and safety of all employees, which are known,
to employees.
Consult employees on how to handle a down turn in the business layoffs are
avoidable, ofer outplacement services, retraining and severance benefits provide
training opportunities.
Work with charities, job centers to redesign jobs to make them accessible to
disadvantaged.
Support organizations that promote fair trade and human rights compliance.
Make sure that members is aware that there are explicit policies against discrimination
in hiring, salary, promotion, training or termination of any employee on basis of
gender, race, age ethnicity, disability etc.
COMMUNITY :
Encourage employee volunteering in the community payroll giving and back up with
financial contributions and help in kind.
Make some of business products or service available free or at cost to charitable products.
Look for opportunities to make surplus product and redundant equipment available to local
schools, charities and community organization.
Offer quality work experience teachers for school children and students.
Every company harms environment and people. CSR is thus about two aspects :
1. The steps taken by a company to neutralize, minimum or offset the harmful effect
caused by its process and product usage.
2. The further steps a company takes using its resources, core competence, skills,
location and funds for the benefit of people and the environment.
CSR thus helps to define the contribution of a company beyond economic value and
creating employment and weighs this contribution against the damage done by the company
through its production and process. Companies are launching CSR programmes that build on
their core competencies to create ventures that empower communities.
Hospitals are offering more than free check-ups, specially medical camps. Cisco
system could have donated liberally to any community building activity. But it chose to
partner a project where its business capabilities would be used. Lifelines India provides voice
based service to farmers seeking information on agriculture, animal husbandry, fisheries and
post harvest technologies.
About 150 villages across Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Himanchal Pradesh are
covered under the programme. Joining hands with Biritsh telecom, one world charity and the
Indian society of agri-business professionals, Cisco contribution equipment, staff and funds
to design, build and support this service.
There are others like Cisco, who are moving away from conventional Corporate
Social Responsibility (CSR) activities to offer their core business services to socials sector.
In the past, CSR work has been largely restricted to donating towards causes such as
children’s education, women’s up liftment and building basic amenties for communities.
ITC known for its extensive CSR work related to environment conservation recently
started training farmers in building micro water conservation places. It fnded only 75% of the
project cost for each such initiative, thus encouraging farmers to think of innovative financing
options for their projects.
The Mysore-based N.R. Group makers of the cycle brand of Agarbatis, had for long
run a school for blind girls in the city. But last year it chooses to use its business expertise to
do something more meaningful.
It is common for hospital to organize free health check-ups, but one rarely hears of
speciality medical camps. Fortis hospital, Noida not only organizes such camps but also
offers consultation and discount on treatment for ailments in areas such as Cardiology,
nephrology, orthopedics, neurology, gynecology and internal medicine.
The benefit of CSR work gets narrowed down to rural areas. At Bharat Matrimony, all
physical challenged users of the web site are given 50-100% discount on the membership fee.
IBM India too has extended support to the physical challenged by setting up a
computer centre at Victoria Memorial School for the blind in Mumbai. It has also designed
user friendly software applications for the internet, including one on the Linix Platform.

CHAPTER-4
DATA ANALYSIS :
During my project work I have prepared the following questionnaires and interacted
with the employees of OSL, the people of peripheral villagers where the development works
are done, the elected representatives of the villages and the district administration. The
questions are as follows :
To the Employees :
I have interacted with 50 employees of OSL. From that data I have concluded that
only 30% of employees of OSL are aware of CSR rest are not and they are involved in CSR
activities. Most of the employees give their remark and now OSL is giving more priority
towards work than before.
To the people of the villages where OSL has done development work I have asked the
following questions :
To the people :
From their view I get the conclusion that OSL is doing development work. 40% of
people are involved in CSR work. 20% of people have given financial support, 40% of
people have given physical support the work. People are suggesting for good planning of
development work in their villages. They are also cooperating for sustainability of the
development work. The most important thing is people are realizing the benefits of OSL’s
CSR work and also satisfied.
To elected representative :
2. Are you really interested to assist OSL’s development work if initiated in your village
?
(a) Yes (b) No
4. Have you ever apprised OSL to take off development works in your village?
(a) Yes (b) No
5. Have you ever mobilized your people for participation in the programme ?
(a) Yes (b) No
From the above analysis I get the conclusion that OSL is contributing for various
development work. But OSL should personally investigate that the contributed money is
properly utilized or not.
CHAPTER-5
FINDINGS :
The most vital part of each and every project is the findings, without which a project
report can never be concluded. Though the report is based on secondary data, still I have
observed some points or areas which should be given attention by OSL. Among all the top
most public sector companies OSL has given top most priority to social development
activities. OSL is regularly contributing to various areas for the development of the society
but still there are some aspects which should be seriously taken into consideration by OSL.
3. The safety measures of plant workers should be up-to-dated according to the changing
technology.
4. OSL should involve more employees for the CSR work so that the work will be done
more effectively.
SUGGESTIONS :
As compared to other corporate in Orissa, OSL is performing for better in the field of
social development. But being the leader in the market it should dry to enhance its
performance according to the international standard of CSR activities.
After the analytical study I have observed some versatile areas, which should be
focused by the company. According to my suggestion the following points are to be focused
by OSL.
1. The CSR policy of OSL should be well defined and systematically documented.
4. The higher authority must supervise that the donated amount for CSR activities is
properly used by the agencies and agents.
CONCLUSIONS :
