Dear Students,

Congratulations! Your internship is a big step towards your professional

career path.

The Student Careers Office recognizes that you will continue this
journey in the years ahead. This book is to help you prepare for your
internship, and future job opportunities.

As you begin this new phase in your life, take advantage of all the
knowledge around you. Talk to family members, alumni, friends, faculty
and staff. Ask questions! Listen, learn, and be prepared to create and
plan your own future.
3
HH Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan said, “Work is of great
importance, and of great value in building both individuals and societies.
The size of a salary is not a measure of the worth of an individual.
What is important is an individual’s sense of dignity and self-respect”.
“We look forward in the future to seeing our sons and daughters
playing a more active role broadening their participation in the process
of development and shouldering their share of the responsibilities,
especially in the private sector, so as to lay the foundations for the
success of this participation and effectiveness”

Best wishes,

Student Careers Office Team

Internships
F.A.Q’s
1. What is an internship?
It is a form of experiential learning that integrates knowledge and theory
learned in the classroom with practical application and skill development in a
professional setting.
2. What are the benefits of doing an internship?
◗ Application of classroom learning to the workplace.
◗ Exploration of career options.
◗ An opportunity to test your interests, values and abilities in a work setting.
◗ A chance to expand your network of professional contacts.
◗ It will enhance your CV by adding professional work experience.
◗ Help to prepare you for future employment.
3. How many semester credits can a student earn from an
internship?
It differs from one college to another, so please check the curriculum plan page
in the Zayed University Catalog for more details.
4. Are internships paid?
No, they are usually not paid. Consider the internship experience as an
investment in your future education and future career aspirations.
4
5. How many weeks do we have to work for internship?
Usually 8 weeks full time (Communication College go out for 12 weeks part-
time).
6. What is my role as a student intern?
The student intern is responsible for choosing three internship sites and
completing parents’ permission form (See Appendix 1). Interns should submit
a professional CV and be well prepared for potential interviews, as many
employers require the student to attend an interview before accepting as an
Intern.
7. What is the role of college supervisors?
The College Supervisors’ role is to help you integrate the internship into your
overall academic experience. They provide you with academic direction and
evaluate the learning derived from your internship. Additionally, they advise you
on how to define your internship work plan (See Appendix 2), objectives, and
evaluation criteria as well as the amount of credits. College supervisors help
you define the academic requirements of your internship.
8. What is the role of the Student Careers Office Internship
Coordinator?
The Internship Coordinator is a staff member from the Student Careers Office
who serves as the central information resource for all questions concerning
internships. The Internship Coordinator is responsible for informing you about
the process and requirements of securing and participating in an academically
appropriate internship. The Student Careers Office Internship Coordinator
centrally coordinates the site placement process and is directly involved
in creating site requests, follow up, and site confirmation. The Internship
Coordinator also offers support in writing resumes and preparing for interview.

9. What are the documents that need to be submitted for an

internship?
◗ Parents’ Agreement Form.
◗ CV
◗ Copy of your Passport, Kulasat Al Qaid, and National ID Card.
◗ Personal Photo.
10. How can I develop my internship goals and objectives?
Students who are not satisfied with their internships results are usually students
who have not taken the time to define their internship objectives or articulate
their own needs and the needs of the employer early on. Thus, you are greatly
encouraged to consider your professional, personal and academic needs. 5
Examine each area by brainstorming what you would like to gain from your
internship, then breakdown the list to two or three needs per area.
Suggested questions to ask when setting Internship goals are below:

Professional:
◗ Which skills do I want to develop in my internship?
◗ What types of people do I want to network with?
◗ Are there specific activities I want to observe/participate in?

Personal:
◗ What experiences would help me to define my goals?
◗ What experiences will help me to develop my self-confidence?
◗ What experiences would help me work in my future profession?

Academic:

◗ What kind of internship could help me make informed choices for my future
education and learning?
◗ What courses would be easier if I understood how theory is applied in the
workplace?
◗ What new technologies/ equipment / techniques do I want to be exposed to?

Tips for Researching Internship Opportunities.
1. Ensure you research your career field and the companies within it. Employers
will expect you to be knowledgeable about their sector and have done some
research on their company.
2. Go to the company’s website and determine whether they offer the opportunities
you seek.
3. If the company seems to be a good match for you, consider your network. Many
students find their internships through contacts they have made. Your network
should include friends and family (and their friends and family), contacts from
career fairs, faculty, alumni and fellow classmates.
4. Get as much information as possible from your contacts and ask whether they
know of internship opportunities or can give you the name of a contact person.
5. Be sure that the location and work environment match what you are seeking.
6. Put your choice of employer and any contact details you have if you have found
your own internship placement

Creating the Right Impression

Professional CV
What is a CV?
◗ A CV is a summary of your relevant skills, qualifications and experience that
demonstrate your suitability for a job
◗ Your CV is an essential marketing tool in your Internship and job search
◗ It is used by recruiters to assess your suitability against the requirements for
a job role

You need a CV when:

◗ You apply for a job vacancy where you are asked to send a CV
◗ You are applying for Internship positions
◗ You are asked to upload your CV to an on-line application form
◗ You are applying speculatively to an employer
◗ You are attending Career Fairs or recruitment events locally
◗ You are applying for Post Graduate Courses

A strong CV:
9
◗ Has a neat consistent presentable lay out with no grammar or spelling
mistakes
◗ Uses action verbs to describe strengths, experiences and skills
◗ Encourages an employer to want to know more about you and invite you to
an interview
◗ Is tailored and relevant to each job role you apply for
◗ Provides relevant information on the skills, qualities and experience that
demonstrate you are a suitable applicant for the job
◗ Is no more than 2 pages in length

REMEMBER…
◗ Your CV will be one of many that an employer receives. Most employers
spend less than 15-20 seconds looking at CV’s for the first time
◗ Take some time to consider the role you are applying for. Ensure that you
demonstrate how your skills, qualities and experience match what the
employer is looking for
◗ Don’t provide a ‘shopping list’ of everything you have ever done, every
workshop you have attended or every certificate you have gained. Focus on
relevant quality information not quantity in your CV
There are many different types of CV’s and different styles. The Student Careers Office (SCO)
has reference books and guides to assist you. The SCO conducts regular CV workshops every
month. Check Career Focus on Blackboard and SCO website for information on the next
workshop date contact Dubai or Abu Dhabi Student Careers Office for further details

THE INTERVIEW

1616
Internship / Job Interview Strategy
An interview gives you the opportunity to demonstrate what you can
offer to an employer, so it pays to be well prepared. The following
information provides some helpful hints.
Prepare, prepare, prepare – interviewing requires practice.
◗ Know your skills, interests, values, and accomplishments.
Research the company – read the website.
◗ What do you see that you like?
◗ What is their vision and mission – what do you think about it?
◗ Determine why you want to Intern or work for this company.
◗ Be prepared to ask questions about the Internship/ job and the organization,
but avoid questions that can easily be answered from the company Web site.
Do you have friends, family or know any alumni who work for the
company?
◗ If so, contact them to talk about their interview and hiring process.
◗ They may also tell you about the corporate culture, possible career paths, etc.
Practice typical and targeted interview questions:
◗ Why are you interested in this field? 17
◗ Why are you interested in this company?
◗ Why are you interested in this position?
◗ Why should we hire you?
◗ Be prepared to discuss anything on your CV

Be prepared to answer questions you really don’t want to answer.

For example, your:
◗ Greatest weakness
◗ Lack of related experience
◗ Low GPA
◗ Lack of leadership experiences
 Prepare questions to ask:
◗ These questions should reflect your research on the company and the job, but
never information that is easily found on the website or in a brochure.
◗ Do NOT ask about salary or benefits!
◗ Practice with a friend or relative, or go to the student careers office for help.
Common Interview Questions and Answers
Below are a list of common questions asked at interviews. Considering your responses to
these questions will help you to prepare for upcoming interviews. We have tried to give
you a range of typical questions that employers in the UAE often ask graduates. Some of
the more common questions are marked with ***
1. Tell me about yourself***
Often employers use an open question like this to allow you to talk about
yourself and to make you feel at ease at the beginning of the interview. Have
a short statement prepared in your mind although be careful that it does not
sound too rehearsed.
◗ Highlight specific aspects or relevant achievements from your course and
mention any work experience you have.
◗ If you have limited or no work experience highlight positive activities you
have been involved in on or off campus.
◗ If you can try to relate these to the position you are applying.
◗ You should spend no longer than about 2 minutes on this question.
2. What do you know about this organization? ***
This question is one reason to do some prior research on the organization.
◗ Find out what are the major areas of the business and current projects the
company is involved.
◗ Look on the company web site
18
3. Think of a time when you were doing something as part of a
team. Describe the situation and explain the part you played?
Think of an example of working as part of a team to achieve something positive
this could be a sports team, part of a club or organizing an event as part of a
team. Describe the skills you used as a team member like planning, organizing,
coordinating and commitment. Examples that show you often perform for
the good of the team rather than for yourself are good evidence of your team
attitude.
4. Explain what you can bring to the role and to this organization
***
◗ Consider the skills the employer is looking for and emphasize examples of
how you can match these skills.
◗ Highlight your strengths which relate to the position. Example “I have
excellent time management skills and can produce excellent quality in my
work. I was able to meet all of my assignment deadlines at University whist
maintain a GPA of 3.2 and working part time on campus”
5. What do you consider to be your strengths ***
◗ What skills do you excel in that are related to the position?
◗ Make a list of your strengths prior to the interview you can ask friends,
family or teachers to help you with this.
◗ Some good examples are ability to prioritize, problem solving skills, team
work, ability to work under pressure, leadership skills, positive attitude,
supporting others etc.
6. What do you consider to be your main weaknesses?***
◗ There are different ways to deal with this question but you should never
choose a weakness that relates to the job.
◗ Pick a non-related weakness which you’ve worked on to develop and improve
for example “ Although I am able to use microsoft word and excel I really
wanted to improve my skills in access so I joined a class to improve in this area”
◗ State that although you do not feel like you have any specific weaknesses as
a student / fresh graduate you know you still have much to learn and you
are keen and willing to develop all of the required skills for the role.
7. Think of a time when you were faced with conflicting priorities.
What approach did you use and what was the result?***
This is a competency based question and is designed to see how you can manage
conflicting priorities. A good answer would be to say you currently have many
conflicting priorities including university assignments, sporting commitments, clubs
events and family commitments, however you have learnt to manage your time well.
Example
“I was due to hand in an assignment, participate in an art exhibition and attend
a university function within the same week. I completed a list of the tasks and
deadlines and decided to complete my assignment a week early so that I had time to
dedicate to prepare for the exhibition and attend my University function.”
8. We are seeing five other candidates today why should we
employ you?***
Ensure you research the company, your response should focus on a number of
needs the employer has and for each need you should give them the skills and 19
experience you have that match those needs. It’s important to be genuinely
positive and convey a “can do” attitude
9. What motivates you to do your best on the job?
This is a personal trait that only you can say, but good examples are: Challenge,
Achievement, Recognition. You should be ready to give an example from your
experience.
10. Describe your work ethic.
◗ Emphasize benefits to the organization. It is particularly useful
to give examples such as: Rarely taking time off sick - 100% attendance at
University,
◗ Being punctual - always being on time for class or made sure I was
always on time for my Internship
◗ Ensure that I work to a high standard – I always double check my
assignments before handing them in
◗ Complete tasks to the required deadlines – I try to be well
organized so I can balance my priorities, I was successful in achieveing all of
my assignment deadlines
11. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Always show that you are keen to develop your skill set and prepared to do
additional training or study to further develop your career. For example ‘‘In
five years I hope I will have achieved my sales targets and be recognized as
one of the organizations top executives. I hope I will be leading, managing and
supervising the work of others in the team.”
12. Tell me about one of your greatest achievements
Think of an example of something that you are really proud of it can be from
your work, education or personal experience. Try to show a goal that you set
for yourself and describe how you felt when you achieved it.
Examples
“ I always wanted to learn French so I took an evening class last year. When we took
our field trip to France I was able to practice my French and help others in my group
to understand conversations I had with the local people. It felt good to be helping my
fellow students”
“ I achieved the highest honour in my Major which made my parents really proud, my
hard work and efforts really paid off ”
13. What would your University Professor/colleagues say your
strongest point is?
Good responses include:
Energetic, friendly positive attitude, leadership skills, team player, initiative,
patience, hard work, creativity, ability to manage deadlines etc. Remember to
think of examples that you can demonstrate.
14. What has been the biggest challenge in your life and how did
you overcome it?
Here you should think of a personal obstacle or barrier that you have faced it
could be related to your study or a personal issue, the important thing here is
to identify the issue and show how you achieved success.
15. Are you willing to work in a mixed environment?
20
This may be an issue particularly for some female applicants. You should be
aware that most places of work within the UAE require staff to work in a mixed
gender environment. If you need to consider an Internship in a female only
environment make sure you discuss with your Faculty Internship Coordinator.
17. Do you have any questions?
1 Always have some questions prepared it’s fine to make a list to take into the
interview with you but you should aim to have at least 2 questions ready. Try to
show interest and enthusiasm in the questions you ask. Typical questions could
be:
◗ Are there opportunities for employment after Internship?
◗ Who will be my work place supervisor during my internship?
◗ What opportunities for further professional development are available
within the company?
◗ What are the company’s priorities for the coming year?
◗ How would you describe the culture of the organization?
◗ How is performance assessed?
◗ What roles do graduates who were recruited over the last three years have
now?
◗ What do you most enjoy about working here?
◗ How is the job likely to develop over the next two years?
