Research Design

This study utilizes the quantitative research design which is descriptive and correlational

in nature.

The descriptive research design is adopted for this study that describe the defining

characteristics and particular concepts of interest. The design is considered apt because it enables

the researcher to generate data through the standardized collection procedure based on highly

structured research instrument(s) and well defined study concepts and related variables. The

researchers utilized this research design since the study sought to determine the relationship

between of social media and the students’ academic performance.

Population of the Study

The population of this research study includes the students of San Rafael National Trade

School from Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics, Accountancy Business and

Management, Industrial Arts, and Home Economics with total population of 480.

A survey instrument was developed to know the relationship of the use of social media

with regards to the academic performance of the Senior High School Students. The instrument

consisted of six (6) questions, were each question has different variables. The source of the data

in this study will be the survey questionnaire. The questionnaire method will be adapted.

According to Bakar (2001) questionnaires is used to acquire primary data and its suitable to the

research that are based on experiment, observation and survey. Hence, the survey method can

supply researchers with data on attitude, feelings, beliefs and envisioned behavior (Tull and

Kawkins ,1990). Additionally, the assembling of different kind of info from the respondents,

questionnaires will be appropriate for this research which will enable get the actual info from the

target population.

The first part contained some of the social media platforms that are commonly used by

the students. The second part talks about the purpose of social media on the students. The third

part deals on determining the number of hours spend by the students using social media

platforms. The fourth part of the survey consists of seven (7) statements which was rated by

“yes” or “no”. It talk’s about the uses of social media platforms of the students. The social media

usage was based on the ideas found from the reading of the other researcher’s findings and

investigation. The fifth and sixth part of the survey are consists of seven (7) different statements

that shows the positive and negative effects of using social media. It can be rated by answering
