RAINMAKING
The process of making rain is simpler than you might think. As warm, moisture-laden air ...(23)... from the
surface of the earth, it cools and some of the air condenses into tiny droplets that eventually become clouds.
These droplets form around the microscopic particles such as dust and smoke which are ...(24)... in the air.
The science of weather modification is now big business. Using radar and sensitive equipment that ...(25)...
atmospheric changes, weather modifiers fly above or below the clouds and spray them with billions of minute
particles known as seeding agents. These particles either fall into clouds or are wafted into them from below by
warm currents. They then ‘attract' tiny water droplets which ...(26)... around each one.
When enough droplets are attached, precipitation - the third and final stage in the process which returns water
to the earth’s surface - occurs, and it rains. It may take as many as a million droplets to form a single raindrop.
If the clouds contain ice crystals, the results are similar, but now snow will form instead of rain.
Current weather manipulation technology only allows scientists to ‘encourage’ a cloud that is sufficiently
heavy to produce rain. Some more ambitious scientists ...(27)... a day when they will be able to manufacture rain
from blue skies, but this is still in the far distant future.
