LAB # 15 DATE

TITLE: PLAN AND DESIGN (REDOX REACTION)

PROBLEM STATEMENT: Your Biology teacher told you to bring some hydrogen peroxide to be used in an
enzyme catalyzed reaction. When the lab was done, you realized that students got different results
because they used different bottles with markings of 3%, 5% and 9% Hydrogen Peroxide. You suggested
to your teacher that the H2O could be different concentrations and he asked you to prove that. Plan and
design an experiment to determine the concentration of H 2O2 in store bought samples of H2O2 of 3%, 5%
and 9%.

HYPOTHESIS: The concentrations of H2O2 in store bought samples of H2O2 of 3%, 5% and 9% are
different.

AIM: To determine the concentrations of H2O2 in store bought samples of H2O2 of 3%, 5% and 9%.

APPARATUS/ MATERIALS:

 KMnO4 /H+
 Samples of H2O2 containing 3%, 5% and 9%.
 Burette
 Pipette
 Conical Flask

VARIABLES:

 Manipulating: different samples of H2O2, volume of KMnO4

 Responding: concentrations of samples of H2O2
 Controlled: Volume of H2O2

PROCEDURE:

1. Fill burette with known concentration of KMnO 4

2. Using a pipette, measure 20cm3 of 3% of H2O2 and pour into a conical flask.
3. Titrate the H2O2 with KMnO4 until end point is achieved (pink colour). record volume of kmno4
on burette
4. Repeat steps 1- 3 till four titre values are obtained
5. Repeat procedure for the 5% and 9% H2O2

TREATMENT OF RESULTS:

Molar concentration of 3% H2O2

1. Calculate the average volume used for KMnO 4

2. Write equation for the reaction occurring

2MnO4 + 6H+ +5 H2O2  2Mn2+ + 8 H2O + 5O2

3. Calculate the number of moles of KMnO 4 used

4. Deduce the number of moles ofKMnO4 using molarity ratio

5. Calculate molar concentration of H2O2

Molar concentration of 5% H2O2

1. Calculate the average volume used for KMnO 4

2. Write equation for the reaction occurring

PRECAUTIONS

Make sure to take readings at eye level

Keep H2O2 in dim light to prevent decomposition
