ABSTRACT
The purpose of this internship was to understand
the breeding system and recording of Bali cattle at
National Breeding Centre Bali Cattle (BPTU-HPT)
Denpasar. The internship is conducted from July 2nd –
August 2nd 2018, at National Breeding Centre of Bali
Cattle (BPTU-HPT) Denpasar. Open nucleus breeding
scheme (ONBS) is applied in National Breeding Centre of
Bali Cattle (BPTU-HPT) Denpasar. Base Population
Installation (IPD) collaborate with the breeding centre
Pulukan as a nucleus. Selection of Bali cattle are based on
criteria such as quantitative trait (body weight, rump
height and chest girth) and qualitative trait (coat color,
body structure shape, scrotum circumference,
temprament, white shock and white mirror, and dark
dorsal stripe). The 5% selected cattle from performance
test will be used for progeny test to get superior breed. The
i
remaining 10% of cattle is distributed to the Base
Population Installation area as a superior bulls, 50% for
breed and 35% for fattening.
Keywords: Breeding, Recording, Open Nucleus Breeding
Scheme, Bali cattle.

SUMMARY
Bali cattle is Indonesian native cattle which have
distinctive genetic characteristics and advantages that are
superior compared to the other cattle. The superiority of
Bali cattle is that they can utilize low quality feed, not
selective about feed and have a good digestibility towards
fiber feeds. The most striking advantage is the ability to
well adapt to local environmental conditions, especially in
new areas that do not yet have cattle or do not know the
breeding of cattle. Because of this condition, Bali cattle
are often referred to as pioneer cattle.
Internship is conducted from July 2nd – August
2nd 2018, in National Breeding Centre of Bali Cattle
(BPTU-HPT) Denpasar. The purposes of this internships
are improving knowledge on breeding and recording
management of Bali Cattle and criteria of sire and bull
candidate in National Breeding Centre of Bali Cattle
iii
(BPTU-HPT) Denpasar. Improving the understanding and
appreciation about breeding and recording of Bali cattle
will give a new mindset to do a scientific analysis and
problem solving that exist in the field.
The method used in this internship are
participation, observation and data collection. National
Breeding Centre of Bali Cattle (BPTU-HPT) Denpasar
applied the Open Nucleus Breeding Scheme (ONBS)
where the National Breding Centre of Bali Cattle (BPTU-
HPT) Denpasar as the top level of the pyramid or known
as nucleus, and the Instalation of Base Population (IPD) as
bottom level. In ONBS, the elite gene best cow 1% is
transferred from commercial farm to breeding stock.
From breeding stock cow transfer as replacement (the best
2%) to nucleus, so it can decrease inbreeding depression
that may occur. The result of ONBS that applied at
National Breeding Centre of Bali Cattle Denpasar are
superior breed that selected from performance test and
progeny test. The cattle use for performance test come
from nucleus and Base Population Installation. The 5%
selected cattle from performance test will be used for
progeny test to get superior breed. The remaining 10% of
cattle is distributed to the Base Population Installation area
as a superior bulls, 50% for breed and 35% for fattening.
National Breeding Centre of Bali Cattle Denpasar made
improvement of the genetic quality of Bali cattle through
selection, performance test and progeny test. Selection is
conducted based on qualitative and quantitative traits
compared with the Indonesia National Standart for Bali
Cattle. Bull selection was conducted at the weaning age.
Qualitative traits are temprament, scrotum circumference
(for 1.5 years age), coat color, physical disability,
deviation from the criteria of pure Bali cattle, body
compactness and muscularity. Quantitative traits are
iv
measurement of body weight, chest girth, body length,
rump height and BCS (score 1-5). Recording activities
conducted every month. Recording method in National
Breeding Centre of Bali Cattle (BPTU-HPT) Denpasar are
manual and using application. The implementation of
recording at National Breeding Centre of Bali Cattle
(BPTU-HPT) Denpasar is data collection in the field will
be processed using Excel software. Data obtained from the
field will be adjusted to the eartag number of cattle to find
out the changes that occurred during the weighing interval.
The conclusion of internship are: The breeding scheme
that applied at National Breeding Centre of Bali Cattle
(BPTU-HPT) Denpasar is Open Nucleus Breeding
Scheme (ONBS). The breeding program at National
Breeding Centre of Bali Cattle (BPTU-HPT) Denpasar
consists of Base Population Installation (IPD) and
Breeding Centre Pulukan as a nucleus, Criteria for
selection that used at National Breeding Centre of Bali
Cattle (BPTU-HPT) Denpasar are measurement of body
length, withers height, and chest girth, weighing of body
weight, birth weight, weaning time (205 days), yearling
weight and two years weight, cattle observations of coat
color, body structure shape, head shape, legs shape, dark
dorsal stripe on the back, scrotum shape, and temprament.
