First, let’s talk about what
you already know!
After you get with your assigned group, discuss the following questions:
1. What is the culture of Austin Texas?
2. What, if anything, do you know about Germany
BESIDES the holocaust/WW2?
Basic Information
● Located in Central Europe
● One of the major Western world powers,
contributing greatly to the world economy
● Formally recognized as “Germany” in 1990
● Region has been recognized as either an
empire or a state for over a thousand years.
H ow Is School Different In Germany?
● The school schedule is much more
individualized in America.
● Students split into sections of the schools
after 6th Grade
● Sections specialize on the individual
strengths of the students.

● Americans can take languages that serve


future purposes like spanish
● Germans take languages like Greek and
Latin because it has a lot to do with their
culture
Germans In Texas
● Texas has a fairly large
German population
● Immigrated in droves in
1800’s
● Texan culture has
diffused with some
German traditions.
Cultural Diffusion: the spread of the beliefs and social activities of one
culture to different ethnicities, religions, nationalities, etc.
Ethnic Enclave: a geographic area with high ethnic concentration,
characteristic cultural identity, and economic activity.
Germans In Texas Facts
● By 1930, ~30% of the Texan population was
German
● Many families changed their names during
world wars
● Several german foreign exchange students
at Austin High, one has brought y’all a gift

● Created ethnic enclaves, such as


Fredericksburg (pictured left) and
Pflugerville
● Influenced Texan food within such
enclaves

The Pretzel
● Church created stricter rules for fasting
● Name derived from term “bracellae”,
or Little Arms. Germans derived from
that “Bretzle”
● Monks used pretzels to warn cities of incoming attacks
● Used in marriage as a seal in the bond of marriage
Hamburger ● Germans Then immigrated to America
● Originally made from ● There was an increase in population and need for

Sauerkraut
Basic History:
● Invented in China over 2,000 years ago
● Later brought to Europe by the Mongols.
● Similar foods now exist all over the world
● Was used commonly by farming families
because it doesn’t need to be refrigerated

Cultural Significance:
● Means “Sour Cabbage” in German
● Became a part of many traditional
and celebratory German meals
