This article aims to explain the dynamic transformation of the role of waqf in the economic development of Muslims and
society at large with a specific focus on the waqf for higher education. The concept of ownership is also defined in order to
understand the role of waqf in general and further elaborates the role and importance of waqf for education in the higher
learning institutions. Models of educational waqf for universities such as Universiti Putra Malaysia, International Islamic
University Malaysia, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and Universiti Islam Malaysia will also be discussed.
