I. COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This will examine the ethical issues that arise as a result of increasing use of computers, and the responsibilities of those who
work with computers, either as computer science professionals or end users. The course will stress the ways in which computers
challenge traditional ethical and philosophical concepts, and raise old issues in a new way.

II. COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES


In this class, the students will learn about ethical problems that computer scientists face, the codes of ethics of computing
professional societies, legal issues involved in technology, and the social implications of computers, computing, and other digital
technologies. During the class, the students will:

1. Understand, identify, and apply different ethical philosophies, frameworks, and methodologies.
2. Identify and interpret the codes of professional conduct relating to the disciplines of computer science and software engineering.
3. Analyze the local and global impact of computing on individuals, organizations, and society.
4. Understand and apply the concepts and principles of moral thinking to problems relating to computing and digital technologies.
5. Improve the skills of the students by writing argumentative essays and pieces, and in critical thinking, analysis, and presentation.
6. Become familiar with a number of noteworthy essays written by influential researchers in the field of cyber ethics.

VI. FINAL PRODUCT


Each student need to submit a portfolio that covers ethical issues of computing in the news. This will entail finding relevant news
articles and briefly presenting them in class. Student also need to answer several questions pertaining to some topics which is discussed
in Ethics class and submit them week before the final examination. The final product will be graded according to:

EXPECTATIONS FROM STUDENT


The student’s responsibility is to come to each class prepared for individual and group outputs. They are also expected to take all examinations and
submit required materials on the date scheduled. They should read the assigned problems prior to class. They are expected to attend each class and
participate actively in the discussions.

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY
All students are expected to be academically honest. Cheating, lying and other forms of immoral and unethical behavior will not be tolerated. Any
student found guilty of cheating in examinations or plagiarism in submitted course requirements will (at a minimum) receive an F or failure in the
course requirement or in the course. Plagiarism and cheating refer to the use of unauthorized books, notes or otherwise securing help in a test;
copying tests, assignments, reports or term papers; representing the work of another person as one’s own; collaborating without authority, with
another student during an examination or in preparing academic work; signing another student’s name on an attendance sheet; or otherwise
practicing scholastic dishonesty.

POLICY on ABSENCES

The allowed number of absences for Fourth year students enrolled in 2 hours class is 7 absences. Request for excused absences or waiver of absences
must be presented upon reporting back to class. Special examinations will be allowed only in special cases, such as prolonged illness. It is the
responsibility of the student to monitor her own tardy incidents and absences that might accumulate leading to a grade of “0.0.” It is also his
responsibility to consult with the teacher, chair or dean should his case be of special nature.
