NewsELA Article Written Responses

Parts of a paragraph/constructed response:

● Topic Sentence: Introduces what you will be talking about in your paragraph. Sometimes this means RTQ
(restate the question).
● Evidence: Examples and support for your claim/topic
● Analysis: Explanation of how the evidence relates to your claim/topic.
● Conclusion Sentence: Wrap up your writing by concluding with a “so what” statement. Sentence starters for
a conclusion may include: This shows...This demonstrates...I believe...This proves...

Writing Checklist (Use this after you draft your responses)

I have reread my work and checked my:

❏ Capitalization
❏ Spelling (if you see red squiggly lines, consult spell check) Also look for commonly confused words (i.e.
their, they’re, there, are, our, to, two, too)
❏ Punctuation
❏ Citations (this would be the paragraph number you obtained your evidence from)
❏ Sentences (Are they complete? Are there run-ons?)

Prompt 1
Article Title: “Solving the nation's "food desert" problem yields unexpected results”

Prompt: What text structure or text structures help organize this article (e.g. narrative, compare/contrast, cause and
effect, claim and supports...)? Give examples from the text to support your answer.

Response: The way this article is structured is by a title and its evidence about the title. An example is in Grocery
Giants Are Moving In how it says that Whole Foods are trying to move into areas where supermarkets are not in
vicinity. Another example is in the 3rd paragraph in the same section how Rose Ducaste said that she pays half of what
she would defaultly pay at her local grocery store.

Prompt 2
Article Titles:

● “Some cafeteria fruits, vegetables go from tray to trash”

● “Soda machine: Beverage industry influences health studies, group says”
● “An organic on-campus farm connects kids to agriculture and growing food”

Prompt: Choose one article to write a paragraph that explains the central idea of the article. Use at least two details
from the article to support your response. Remember to cite the evidence you obtained from the text. This includes
quotes and paraphrased information.

Response: The central idea for the article “Some cafeteria fruits, Vegetables go from tray to trash” talks about how
students some time eat fruits. In the 1st page 4th paragraph Kramer says that he wants to serve healthy foods but he
can't because students don't eat healthy. Another reason is when Ronda McCullick said “What We’re asking for is more
flexibility” and wanting to go back to making some of those decision at a local level”.

Prompt 3
Article Title: “Looks do matter! Chains create foods that photograph well on social media”

Prompt: Write a constructed response to summarize the disagreement between any two people or organizations in the
article. If you were to support the claims made by only one of these parties, who would it be? Why?

Response: As I read through the article I found that they all agreed on the same things they just had different opinions.
For an example Ira Kalib and Denise Lee Yohn both said that at the time Unicorn’s were the main trend so obviously
Starbucks was gonna make a drink on it that tasted and looked and tasted good. But Denise predicted that it was not
going to last long. Another Example is in 2015 the Chili chain said that they were going to spend 750,000$ a year to
improve how there food looks. Another thing is Yum Brands & Chili both wanted fans to take photos to there food for
people can bring attention into their stores.
