Week Three - Research

RESEARCH

What did you learn from your I learnt who my target audience is and what platforms my target
research? audience watch music videos on, which allowed me to publish
my work on a platform where it would get views and publicity
from my target audience. I also created a survey asking how they
would define a music video and what they look for in a music
video, this helped me to know what to include in my music video
to make it appeal to my target audience and raise awareness for
my topic. I also learnt that everyone in this generation has
everything on their phone and watch music video’s instantly
which is why YouTube was the best platform to publish my
production as it can be viewed instantly by the target audience
and can raise awareness for the topic. I also researched what my
characters will be like and held auditions to find they best actors
to be in my production, this helped me as I found out who was
able to play the role of my main character to get her emotions
across to the audience to feel her pain and loneliness. I also
researched artists that inspire me in my production which helped
me to gain more ideas on how to incorporate this into my
production.

How has the research into your target By researching my target audience it has helped me to know
audience helped you improve your who will be watching my production and what they look for in a
ideas? music video. I will be creating the self-harm cuts myself to make
them look as realistic as possible and to make the audience
relate to the character personally and emotionally. It also helped
me as the feedback I received from my survey showed that
everyone watches music videos on YouTube which is good as my
production will be published on YouTube as it’s the platform
where everyone can view it instantly. By asking what their
profession it helped me to found out what type of people will
watch my music video as it’s targeted at students and teachers
to look out for signs and to know what to do if they find someone
in this situation rather than doing nothing and letting them get
worse and take matters into their own hands. By finding out what
people spent their money on showed me that people of a
younger age have a disposable income and can spend their
money on whatever they like whereas people of an older age
have commitments and have to spend their money on things like
rent and bills this helped to find out what my target audience
spend their money on and what class they fall into.

How has the research into your By researching my platform it has helped me to find out what
platform helped you improve your platform is popular to watch music videos on and as a result what
ideas? platform is best for my production to be uploaded to. By
publishing my production on YouTube will increase the SEO
rankings. Another platform people can watch my production is
on social media accounts like Instagram, as in this generation
social media is a part of everyone’s life it is also a good way to
share your work for your target audience to view productions. I
also found out that YouTube gets around 1,300,000,000 views a
day which is good as it means my production would get viewed
and awareness would be raised for the topic.

How has researching characters and In my production there isn’t many characters, the only character
actors helped you decide who to that is involved is the main girl character. When asking questions
cast? for my actors I wanted to know what they thought depression
was and if they thought there was enough awareness for self-
harm and depression, this was what I was looking for in my actors
to see if they would be able to play the role of the characters in
my production. From mu audition I found a girl to play the main
character and two other people to pay the best friend and love
interest, this was a crucial part of my production as they would be
in my production quite a lot and would need to be comfortable
acting together with the main character. From my contents
research the main character would have to be a shy girl that you
wouldn’t expect to be going through self-harm and depression, I
think that (Olivia) would be the best person to play the role of the
main girl as she is shy, but everyone gets along with her. I also
think that (Lexi) would be the best person to play the role of the
best friend as she gets along well with Olivia, so they would be
able to act together, I also think that (Jermaine) would be the
best person to play the role of the love interest as he gets along
with Olivia, so they would be comfortable acting together.

What have you learned from your I have learnt that by carrying out test shots It has helped me to
test shoots? How will you use these find out how these techniques will work well in my production and
ideas in your production? how I can use them to make my production more realistic. By
creating the self-harm cuts myself created a look that looked
realistic on camera which made the experience look realistic to
the audience.

What work do you need to complete I need to add to my target audience and platform research, I
outside of lessons to stay on track? also need to create an infographic for all the research I have
found out.

High Grade Tips

Research
● ‘Thorough research’ - include plenty of sources and detailed analysis of this information
● ‘relevant & coherent’ – make sure your research sources are not just the same as the Media
product you hope to make - and talk about how they inform your planning
● ‘sustained’ – continue your research throughout the eleven-week project and don’t just limit it to
the first two weeks
● ‘accomplished & considered’ – all of the above referred to in your daily/weekly reflections
