FLIGHT OPERATIONS INFORMATION MESSAGE

Ref: FOIM 2019/03 Issue 2

Date: May 6th, 2019 Pages: 8
Applicability: All ATR operators, all aircraft.
SUBJECT: Engine cool down period

Purpose

The objective of this FOIM is to inform the ATR operator’s community on the optimized
recommended cool down period prior to engine shut down.

Introduction

As per Pratt & Whitney Canada’s recommendation to minimize the risk of carbon formation
on some key components, analysis has determined that the most efficient Engine cool down
period to be 2 minutes. This period is necessary to allow the engine internal components to
reach a temperature level that would minimize the possibility of carbon formation (coking),
especially in the number 5 bearing area, and its undesirable consequences.

ATR concur with PWC statement that an engine cool down period of two minutes at power
lever setting below flight idle (FI) prior to shutdown will assist hot section temperature
equalization and lower hot section components metal temperature. It also reduces the residual
heat build-up in the engine/nacelle and most importantly reduces the oil coking in the # 5
bearing area and carbon formation in the oil system. Excessive carbon formation in the oil
system may cause unplanned removals and increase the operating cost of the engines.
Accordingly, severe coking in the no.5 bearing covers area may result in internal oil leakage
and ultimately lead to oil smoke / smell in cabin events.

Recommendation

This recommended engine cool down period starts when the power levers are set below flight
idle including taxiing time at ground idle until parking.
The 30 seconds propeller feathering before engine shut down (recommended to allow
scavenging of RGB oil back to main oil tank) are included in the 2 minutes cool down time.

Consequently, ATR will amend the current version of “FCOM.PRO.NOP NOR.20 After
Landing” and ATR-600 associated Electronic Check List (ECL).
Both are planned to be released by Q3-2019.

Appendix 1 shows a preview of “FCOM.PRO.NOP NOR.20 After Landing” as it will appear at

revision 3.0 together with the associated ECL specification.
